When he was a fourth grader, Max’s family moved into town where he attended school, graduating from high school in 1944.

Max was always a hard worker and enjoyed being busy, even as a young boy. He worked on the family dairy farm helping to mild 25 to 30 cows by hand. As a freshman, he worked at Davidson Grocery delivering groceries. In high school, Max spent all of his free time at his uncle George’s farm working for Hardey Bradberry.

Max joined the Navy the day after his high school graduation. He was assigned to a LCVP landing craft as a machine gunner. He served for 18 months in the Pacific Theater during WWII. After his discharge in 1946, Max returned to Hoxie where he owned and operated M&M Body Builders until his retirement in 1987.

On April 10, 1949, Max married his life-long sweetheart, Juanita Moss. They would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary next month.

At an early age, Max developed a love for the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. These activities were highlights throughout his entire life, especially when they involved his son, Randy; his four grandsons, Matt, Ryan, Adam, and Devin; or their special neighbors, the Neuenschwanders.

Max’s most precious joy in his life was his family; his daughters, Sandy and husband Tom, Deb and husband Jim; and his son, Randy. If you really wanted to see a big smile on Max’s face all you had to do was mention his six grandchildren or 10 great-grandchildren. Grandpa Max was dearly loved by each and every one of them. He will be sadly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Max was preceded in death by his son, Randy, his parents, one sister and one brother and a host of other relatives and friends. He is survived by his wife, Juanita, of St. Francis; daughters Sandy and Tom Smull, St. Francis, and Deb and Jim Kennedy, Dodge City; two sisters, Donna Adams and Joan Mowry and husband Chuck, all of Yuma, AZ; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 27, 2009 at the Hoxie Christian Church followed by burial at the Hoxie Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Hoxie Christian Church and sent in care of Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home, Hoxie.
