COUNTY FORMATION

Wallace County was originally created in 1868. It was named in honor of W. H. L. Wallace, a veteran of the Mexican-American War. He became a Bridgadier General and died from wounds received at the Battle of Shiloh during the Civil War.

The county government went through considerable turbulence. Wallace County was attached to Ellis County for a time and to Trego County for a time. It lost territory to Logan County. It gained eastern territory in 1879 from portions of Thomas, Sheridan, and Gove Counties. Wallace County was dramatically reduced in 1881 to its present size.

Pond City was the first county seat. In 1875 Wallace became the county seat. Today, Sharon Springs is the county seat.
