Michael Floersch

Michael was born on 21 Dec, 1834, the youngest of 7 children, in Bloedesheim (now called Hochborn). This is wine country, about 30 km south of Mainz. From the records office in Westhofen I was able to obtain the marriage record of Michael's parents, Johann and Maria Elisabetha Floersch. In addition I was able to obtain the birth records of all of Michael's siblings. Michael's older brother Mathias was born in 1833. Mathias also resided at Flush for a short time, and eventually settled at St. Mary's, KS, to raise his family.

On 22 April, 1843, Johann sold his property in the Bloedesheim/Frettenheim area, and sometime later with his family, boarded the sailing ship Queen Victoria, at the port of LeHavre, France. The ship's passenger list documents the ship's arrival at the Port of New Orleans on 10 July, 1843, with Johann, his wife, and 7 children among 111 passengers. On 29 July, 1843, Johann filed papers in St. Louis, MO, of his intent to become a citizen of the U.S.A. On 23 Oct. 1843, Johann purchased a 160 acre farm in Section 21, TWP 53 of Range 35 of Platte County, MO, for "800 pieces of money". This is a few miles west of Weston, MO, which at that time was a busy shipping port on the east bank of the Missouri River.

After Michael left Missouri to settle in Kansas in 1854, His father, Johann, died in the Jefferson City, MO, prison on 13 Jan 1855. On 15 June of that year, Michael's mother, Elizabeth, sold the farm to a John Pitt for $250, and moved west to join her son, Michael.

Michael had one daughter and three sons with his first wife, Mary Ann Dekat. With his second wife, Louisa Dekat, sister of Mary Ann, Michael had two sons and another daughter. The younger of the latter two sons, Michael A. Floersch, was the doctor who practiced in Topeka.

Michael, his mother Elizabeth, and both wives are buried in the cemetery at Flush, KS.
