KINGMAN JOURNAL, 23 December 1932 |
Obituary of NELLIE LAKE MADDIX |
Mrs. Nellie Maddix Died Sunday Morning Mrs. Nellie Maddix, one of the well-known old ladies of Kingman, died at her home on avenue G west Sunday morning, following a lingering illness of paralysis. Mrs. Maddix had been a resident of Kingman since 1884, when she and her husband came here. Mr. Maddix died January 22, 1905, since which time she has maintained her home and continued her work until a few months ago. She did dressmaking and fancy sewing and had a large clientele in this line. Up until the time she was stricken she was as spry and active as many people years younger than she, and not only did her work but thoroughly enjoyed herself. Until about a year ago she was a regular attendant at the picture show, which she enjoyed immensely, and notwithstanding her age she walked down and back almost every night. Her mind was unusually bright and active to the last. Nellie (Lake) Maddix was born January 5, 1859; died December 18, 1932; aged 73 years, 11 months and 13 days. Her early life was spent in Illinois, where she was married to George Maddix in 1876, at Jacksonville, Ill. They moved to eastern Kansas in 1883, coming to Kingman a year later. She is survived by three sons, Will of Medicine Lodge, Pearl of Grey Cliff, Montana, and Emory of Ellinwood. There is one brother, Arthur Lake, of Elkhart. She was a member of the Christian church and the Royal Neighbors lodge. Funeral services were held at the McKenna-Yeoman mortuary Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. A. C. Hornbaker. Interment was in Walnut Hill. Submitter's note: Came to Kansas before 1880 census. Grave marker is Maddux. Son William used Maddix spelling. |
