THE LaCYGNE JOURNAL, 19 October 1945
Obituary of ELMER LEWIS CALVIN
Elmer Lewis Calvin, son of Jackson and Almira Calvin, was born at Trafalgar, Indiana, March 10, 1870, and passed away at his home in LaCygne, Kansas, October 10, 1945, at the age of 75 years and 7 months. When a small boy he came west with his parents and for a short time resided in western Missouri, coming to Kansas in the fall of 1885.

When he was 16 years of age his father passed away and he assumed the responsibilities of a father in helping his mother care for his seven younger brothers and sisters.

On February 13, 1898, he was united in marriage to Nettie Shattuck, daughter of William Henry and Mary Shattuck. Mr. and Mrs. Calvin bought a farm in Valley township and here they established a home where they continued to live for 46 years. A little over a year ago Mr.
Calvin decided to sell his farm and move to LaCygne where he had purchased a home. Here he lived at the time of his death.

Although Mr. Calvin was well along in years he still retained a keen interest in the various activities to which he had been accustomed. He was a member of the Brooklyn Grange and still maintained a membership in the Farm Bureau.

Many years ago he united with the Methodist church at East Mount Zion, later transferring his membership to the LaCygne Methodist church. With Mrs. Calvin he attended this church Sunday morning, October 7, and that evening he was stricken with a cerebral hemorrhage from which he did not recover.

Surviving are his wife of the home and five children as follows: Homer J.
Calvin, Osborne; Lee Calvin, LaCygne; Mrs. Delbert A. Leascher, Kansas City, Missouri; Clifton C. Calvin, Lawrence, and Mrs. Delmar W. Shannon, Kansas City, Missouri. Also five grandchildren, four brothers and two sisters.

The funeral service held Friday afternoon at the Methodist church was
conducted by Rev. J.H. Anderson. Music was rendered by a quartet composed of Mrs. Charles Kemper, Mrs. Ralph Ross, Mr. Floyd Dalton and Mr. Danner, with Mrs. George Prike at the piano. The six nephews who acted as pallbearers were Russell Calvin, Forrest Calvin, Verne Calvin, Wilmer Calvin, Howard Frisbie and Rees Shattuck.

Those attending from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Howard Frisbie, Moberly, Missouri; Mr. and Mrs. Verne J. Calvin, White City; Mr. and Mrs. Wilmer Calvin and family, Joplin Missouri; Mrs. S. Cowel, Wichita; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hiatt, Independence; from Kansas City: Mr. and Mrs. Glen Frisbie, Mrs. and Mrs. Wilbur Frisbie, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Smith, Mr. Verner Shattuck, Mr. and Mrs. William Weir, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Tyler, Mrs. Virginia Smith, Mrs. Wallace G. Force, Miss Louise Lutz; from Osawatomie; Mr. and Mrs. Glen Carpenter and
Mrs. Verlie Wobler; Mrs. George Wilcox and Mr. Willis Wilcox of Blue Mound, and Mr. and Mrs. Rees Shattuck of Prescott.
