Obituary of GRANT M. SHATTUCK

Grant M. Shattuck, formerly of Linn county, passed away suddenly of a heart attack, Thursday. December 24, after an illness of three weeks, at his home in Lead, South Dakota, where he had lived for many years, employed by the Homestake gold mining company. He was retired in 1935, but continued to make Lead his home.

Born in Valley township in Linn county, September 18, 1866, he was the eldest son of Captain and Mary Barnard Shattuck, a pioneer family of Trading Post, Kansas. He was married to Stella Dennis of Pleasanton, a Linn county school teacher, in 1894. The first seven years of their married life they spent on a farm near Trading Post, after which they went to Lead, South Dakota, where he lived out the remaining years of his life.

His wife, Stella Dennis Shattuck, passed away in 1922, following a long illness. In 1927 he married Miss Winnie Dennis, a teacher for many years in Portland, Oregon, and a sister of his first wife.

Mr. Shattuck was a member of the Homestake Veterans' association, by virtue of his long service with the mining company. He also belonged to the Modern Woodmen of America.

Besides his wife, he leaves one brother, Clyde Shattuck, and two sisters, Mrs. Ina Calvin and Mrs. Nettie Calvin, all of Valley township, and a third sister, Mrs. James Frisbie of Pleasanton. He was a brother-in-law of Mayor H.L. Clarke, and an uncle of Postmaster Lee Calvin of LaCygne.

The body was brought to LaCygne, accompanied by his widow, for burial in Oak Lawn cemetery. A funeral service was held n the Methodist church Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. C.F. Mayer, and attended by many relatives and friends from the Trading Post community in which he formerly lived.

At the brief service Mr. and Mrs. A. Wilgus and Mr. and Mrs. C.T. Potter sang "Lead, Kindly Light" and "Crossing the Bar," with Mrs. B.E. Huffman at the piano. The body bearers were his nephews, Lee Calvin, Clifton C. Calvin, Rees Shattuck, Verner Shattuck, Arthur Frisbie and Lawrence Reinke.
