Obituary of LAURA McCAULEY

LAURA McCAULEY
Funeral services for Mrs. James McCauley, a Linn County pioneer mother, who came to Kansas by covered wagon, were held at the Trading Post schoolhouse Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock.

The rites were conducted by the Rev. Wade H. Odneal, and music was furnished by the deceased's great-granddaughters; the Misses Virginia and Carol Smith with Mrs. Gwen Wittle accompanied them on the piano.

Pallbearers were Rees Shattuck, Verner Shattuck, Grant Shattuck, Robert Smith, Pete Upham and Charles Beth. Burial was in the Trading Post cemetery.

After comforting words to the relatives and friends, the minister read the following obituary:

Laura Gillingham was born near Springfield, Illinois, November 15, 1855 and departed this life on November 2, 1944, lacking just 13 days of being 89 years old.

On December 2, 1874 she was united in marriage to James McCauley. To this union two children were born; Ida Shattuck of Pleasanton and Joe McCauley who passed away in 1923.

She leaves to mourn her death, her daughter, Ida Shattuck, six grandchildren; Rees Shattuck of Prescott, Faye Smith, Verner Shattuck, Fern Middaugh, and Grant Shattuck of Kansas City and Kenneth McCauley who is serving in the U.S. Navy overseas. There are also nine great-grandchildren.

Mrs. McCauley came with her husband and baby daughter to Kansas by covered wagon, settling on a farm near Boicourt. Here the son was born and again the family decided to move. This time they went by covered wagon to Colorado where they spent a year, coming back to live in the vicinity of Boicourt and Trading Post where they spent most of their lives.

About fourteen years ago, Mr. and Mrs. McCauley moved to a farm south of Pleasanton where they lived until his death December 26, 1942.

Mrs. McCauley then went to Pleasanton and spent the remainder of her days with her daughter where she received every care that loving hands could give.

She had been a faithful member of the Christian Church from early life. She had a sunny disposition; and her smile and kind words will be sadly missed by all her loved ones and friends.
