Obituary of WILLIAM HENRY SHATTUCK
WILLIAM HENRY SHATTUCK
Again the grim conqueror death, comes, and another sad event has occurred. William H. Shattuck died at his home, Friday morning, September 30, at about 3 o'clock, aged 52 years, and on Saturday, the day following, the departed one was followed to the Swayback school house by one of the largest crowds of relatives and friends, who deplored the loss of a loving husband, a kind father, and an ever helping friend in time of need.

The funeral services were conducted by Rev. S.P. Cullison, with some very sympathetic remarks from Job, 16th chapter and 22nd verse, after which all paid their last tribute of respect. The remains were then taken to the cemetery near by and laid away to rest. His death, though not unexpected, has saddened the hearts of the entire community. For the past few months the deceased has suffered untold agonies and has been confined to the house nearly the entire time.

He was an old citizen, coming here from Rensselaer county, New York. He was a first lieutenant in the Union army. His virtues and noble character elevated him on a plane above all reproach.

The deceased leaves a wife and eight children to mourn their loss, but it is his everlasting gain. May the sorrows of his companion be tempered by the remembrance of his sanctity in that home.

Written by J.A. Fitzgerald, East Mount Zion, October 3 (NOTE: This is the obituary of my great-grandfather and great-grandmother, William Henry Shattuck and Mary Anstress Barnard Shattuck.
Mary Shattuck's story of her trips to the west coast and back to the midwest are already in the Family Stories.)
