CARL FRITHIOF ORTH (Ört) and

ANNA MAGNUSDOTTER (MAGNUSSON)

Carl was the second child of Ander Magnus Ört and Clara Jonsdotter. He was born 31 August 1855, at Lindstrop, Ostergotland, Sweden. He died 21 April 1903, Hutchinson, Reno County, Kansas. He is buried in the Eastside Cemetery, Hutchinson, Reno County, Kansas. He married Anna MAGNUSDOTTER (MAGNUSSON), 27 October 1888 in Hutchinson, Kansas. Hilda Orth ROBERTSON remembered being told Carl ORTH began working as a carriage boy for the senators in Stockholm Sweden at the age of 15 years. In December of 1877, Carl Frithioff ORTH was accepted as a Guardsman of the Royal Sven Lif Grade in Stockholm, Certificate #74. It is recorded on November 26, 1877, that he became a member of the Sven Lifeguards Parish – Stockholm City, Stockholm, transferred from Asbo parish (film # 388202). He served with his military order with honor until 24 January 1885 when he resigned his commission as a corporal on 22 January 1885 and moved to Katarina Parish. His membership was recorded as received from Stockholm City the 30th of January 1885 (film 388202). A surviving daughter of Carl Orth remembers hearing the reason her father left the military was – one of his duties each year was to travel Sweden and conscript young men into the Swedish army. This caused such sadness in some families that he didn’t want a part of this sadness. After he left as a corporal of the 3rd company of the Royal Majesty’s Svea Lif Guarde Nigs on 24 January 1885, he worked for a Mr. C. G. Prehl, a brewer, from 2 March 1885, until 2 June 1886.

Church records show he left Stockholm, Sweden, 22 February 1887 (Emigration film 083185). On 4 August 1887, Carl Frithioff made a Declaration of Intention to Jno B. VINCENT, Clerk of the District Court, Hutchinson, Reno County, 9th Judicial District, State of Kansas to become an American citizen.

His parents and brother Alfred, sisters Hulda and Edla had received a certificate to leave Sweden for America 22 March, 1881. Carl came to Hutchinson, Reno County, Kansas in all probability because his parents and family were there at that time. Carl met Anna Magnusson at a picnic. Anna was born April 4, 1865 at Stranghult, Virestad, Kronoberg, Sweden. A surviving daughter remembered hearing stories of Carl taking Anna for canoe rides during their courtship. Anna had left her home in Sweden on the 3rd of March 1886. She was living in Hutchinson with an uncle and aunt Swan and Kristin ESKELSON. She was employed doing housework in various homes in Hutchinson. On 27 October 1888, they were married by a Methodist minister Cyrus A. KING. Carl was aged 29 years and Anna was 23 years old. It wasn’t long till they purchased a home at 535 Sherman Street, Hutchinson, Kansas. They paid $700.00 for the house. Carl Frithioff Ört, ORTH became an American citizen 20 June 1892. He worked for the City of Hutchinson as a trimmer of electric light. Kansas Census, Reno County, United States, 8 June 1902, shows Carl Frithioff ORTH, wife Anna, son Leonard, daughters Mabel A., Hilda W. and Edla were living in Hutchinson at 535 Sherman Street. Children Leonard and Mabel were attending school.

Carl had a boil on his arm and the treatment at that time was to open it and treat it with coal oil. The sore eventually turned into blood poison and it spread in his arm. The surgeons said the only possibility of saving his life was to amputate the arm. His reply was he didn’t want to be half a man. He died at the age of 48 years, leaving a young widow and five children. Carl Frithioff ORTH was very active in several fraternal organizations, Odd Fellows, AOUW Lodge, Woodsmen and others. He had served many years as treasurer of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Hutchinson. On his death he was not permitted to be buried from the church because of his associations with the lodges. His services were held at Johnson Funeral Home. Because of this, his wife Anna requested her services when she died to be held from Johnson Funeral Home.

Family Bibles, cemetery records, Ekeby Parish Records of Births, and Clerical survey books as well as family memories have helped to put this book together.
