Kansas furnished approximately 75,000 men for the army, navy and marine corps during the World War. Of these, approximately 65,000 served in the army, 10,000 in the navy, and 1,200 in the marine corps. Of the Kansans who served in the army, 2,246 died in the service, 157 died while serving in the navy, and 49 Kansas marines lost their lives.
In 1920 there was published by this department a volume containing the records of the Kansans who lost their lives while serving in the army during the World War. The present volume includes the records of Kansans who died while serving in the navy and marine corps.
The list of casualties contained in this volume was compiled from records furnished the state of Kansas by the Navy Department and marine corps headquarters. In certain cases incomplete information has been furnished this office, and in all probability a few casualties occurred of which no record has as yet been furnished to the state. Records furnished cover the service of men who gave Kansas as their residence at time of entry into service. For information relative to service of men who were residents of another state at time of entry into service. inquiry should be addressed to the Adjutant General of the state given by the man as his residence.
