Kansas GenealogyHow You Can Help |
But perhaps you have some material that would be a very nice contribution to the KSGenWeb State archives or the County pages if the coordinator is maintaining his/her own archives files. Some County Coordinators do, some don't, kinda depends on how comfortable they are with the programing requirements.
KSGenWeb and USGenWeb are dedicated to the _FREE_ access of genealogical information on the internet. The county and state web pages are all done by volunteers. Many other volunteers have transcribed information from their personal libraries or files for posting on the internet. Do you have a will or census listing or correspondence from/to one of your ancestors that you could transcribe and contribute for posting on the internet? Do you have an obituary for your great grandparent? You don't have to be able to program a web page. Lots of text files are posted and someone else takes care of the programing of the link to it, the uploading of the files and all the technical stuff.
For ideas, take a look at the articles posted on the History pages on Montgomery Co., Ks. those were done by a local newspaper editor, he emailed his articles to Barbara and she made them into web pages.

It is important that you think about copyright infringement issues. If you want to transcribe all the current obituaries from your local newspaper, it would be necessary for you to get their permission from the newspaper publisher (in writing) before you proceed. If you want to transcribe parts of a book published in the last 70 years, then you would need the permission of the author. One or two obituaries that are several years old would not cause a problem, but source information needs to be included with the item. ie., XYZ newspaper, issue # __, volume # ___, dated ________ . The documentation about the source needs to be as good as you need to prove your source in your own genealogical database.
Please think about what you have that might help someone else. If you have questions, please ask and we'll be glad to try to answer them. If we can't, we'll try to find someone who can. All of us, who have volunteered for KSGenWeb and USGenWeb would welcome your efforts to make this project even better. Thanks and best of luck with your genealogy project.
