Obituary of JOHN EDWARD MORGENSTERN

John Edward Morgenstern, son of Samuel and Wilhelmina (Radke) Morgenstern, was born Dec. 21, 1897, in Russell County, Winterset Township. His death occurred on Dec. 30, 1980, in Russell City Hospital at the age of 83 years, 9 days.

J. E. or Eddie as most of his friends knew him, grew to manhood in Russell County. He attended school in Russell and began his farming career at an early age. On May 27, 1919, he was united in marriage to Bertha Heil at Hoisington, and this union was blessed with three children, LeRoy, Leon and Gloria.

All of his life was filled with the many challenges of a farmer-stockman and he continued to be very active in this work past the normal retirement age for most. He considered his retirement from about 1962 when he no longer felt the full load of the farm work but maintained a keen interest in what was going on in the farming industry. Last summer was the first year he had not been involved with the wheat harvest. He didn't even drive a truck this year.

While living on the farm he was active in the community. He served as clerk of Winterset Township Board for many years and was also on the Roosevelt Rural School Board for a long time. After moving to Russell in 1949 he was no longer active on the farm community boards.

He was baptized and confirmed in the Immanuel Lutheran Church (South Church) at Milberger. He was active in the church choir and had maintained and continued interest in the choir since he was 16 years old. He was also involved with the quartet that frequently sang German songs for funerals and special church activities. As a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Russell he was active in the choir as well as all areas of church participation.

Those who preceded him in death were his parents, his wife, Bertha, who died on June 13, 1972, a granddaughter, Sheryl Beth Sellens, a great-grandson, Thomas Wayne Tupper, two brothers, Sam and Reinholdt, and three sisters, Caroline Nuss, Lydia Radke, and Othelia Krug.

Survivors are his children, LeRoy of Hoisington, Leon of Bloomfield, Colo., and Mrs. Glen (Gloria) Sellens of Hays, a sister, Mrs. John (Pauline) Krug of Wichita; 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, many other relatives and friends.
