Mary Ann FELT of Toronto, died Tuesday, July 11, at Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka at the age of 26. She had been a student and was employed at Tri-Ko, Inc. at Osawatomie before her illness. She was born Sept. 26, 1973, at Fort Leavenworth the daughter of Richard D. and Isabel G. Gill Felt. She was graduated from Osawatomie High School in 1991 and had been attending Mid-America Nazarene College in Kansas City. She was a member of the Nazerene Church in Osawatomie. She is survived by her maternal grandmother, Dorothy Shatto, of Eureka; a paternal grandmother, Betty L. Davis, Hinckley, Minn; her parents, Richard and Isabel Felt, Toronto; a brother, Richard D. II, Paola; and a 5-year old son, Timothy Adam Felt of Toronto. A sister, Katherine J. Felt, died in 1992. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church in Toronto. Burial will be in Toronto Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Campbell Funeral Home in Yates Center from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday. Rena FLACK, 82, of Moran died Monday, Dec. 2, at the Moran Manor Nursing Home. She was a homemaker. She was born Dec. 13, 1902, at Bayard, the daughter of Robert and Dora Frame Dougherty. On Sept. 20, 1919, she married Alva Flack in Iola. They lived at Laharpe and then in Texas several years before moving to Moran in 1931. Mr. Flack died Oct. 10, 1974. Mrs. Falck was a member of the Moran United Methodist Church. Survivors include a son, Russell Flack of Moran; a brother, Bing Dougherty of Moran, two sisters, Jessie Hardy of Moran and Emma Lambeth, Downey, Calif.; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Death of Mrs. Jane GARDNER. It Occurred Last Night, the Results of Dropsy. Mrs. Jane Gardner, mother of Wm. Bickford, at 216 North Cottonwood, died last night at eight o'clock and will be buried tomorrow at Larned. The body was shipped on the Santa Fe this afternoon. Mrs. Gardner was eighty-four years old and while her death was due directly to dropsy she has been in general feeble health for some time. Mrs. Gardner has lived in Iola but a short time. Robert GILLESPIE, 75-year-old retired Allen county farmer, died Saturday night at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John Cramer, in Geneva. Mr. Gillespie's death came on the 75th birthday of his wife, who survives him. The funeral was held this afternoon at 2:30 in the Waugh funeral home here. Burial being made in the LaHarpe cemetery. The Rev. J. Lee Releford officiated. Mr. Gillespie had lived in Allen county for 24 years. He came to this part of the country from Kentucky, the state of his birth. He was a steam shovel operator in the days of the old Kansas Portland cement plant at Concreto. After the operation of the plant was suspended he became a farmer. During the past several years he and Mrs. Gillespie alternated their place of residence between Kansas City, where their son, Frank, lives, and the Geneva home of their daughter. The son and daughter, besides the widow, are the only survivors of Mr. Gillespie's immediate family. Mr. Gillespie was ill but a few days prior to his death. Opal GRAY, 64, 411 North Oak, died this morning at the Allen County Hospital. Mrs. Gray had been in failing health for the past year. Mrs. Gray was born at Skidmore, Missouri, December 28, 1905, and she was married to Dick Gray at St. Joseph, Missouri on March 23, 1923. She had lived in Iola most of the time since her marriage. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Skidmore. Survivors include her widower of the home, a son, Earl Gray, Coffeyville, two daughters, Mrs. Curtis (Irene) Duggan, Iola, and Mrs. Duane (Dorothy) Beatty, Lyndon; a sister, Mrs. Donald (Mildred) Hart, Skidmore and eight grandchildren. John D. GREGG, 85, died this morning at the home of his son, Edward Gregg, 31 N Second street. Mr. Gregg was born in Warren County, Iowas, coming to Kansas when he was a boy. He has lived in Allen County most of his life and was a member of the Presbyterian Church. In addition to hi son, Edward, he leaves a foster daughter, Mrs. Leona Ethel Gregg O'Neal, St. Petersburg, Fla. Services will be conducted by the Rev. E.C. Angelo M. GUIDOTTI, 75, of Humboldt died this morning, March 20, at the Neosho Memorial Hospital in Chanute. He had been in failing health for the past year. He was born March 16, 1904 if Decatur, Ill. he was a retired construction worker and had lived in Humboldt for 11 years, having moved there from Bristol, Colo. On Feb. 17, 1937 he married Ollie M. Musick in Lamar, Colo. She survives as do a stepson, Charles Peterson of Atlantic City, NJ; a sister, Mrs. Margaret Passini, Lamar, Colo., and a step-grandson. Two brothers and a sister preceded him in death. The Rev. Ralph Wise will officiate at the funeral service at 2 p.m. Friday at the Price-Stanley Funeral Home, Humboldt. Mrs. Helen HALE of Iola died today at Sterling Heights Manor. She suffered a stroke April 5, 1970, and has been in failing health since. She was born at Humboldt and married Ray Hale May 5, 1917 in Gas City. They moved to the present home at 311 South Sycamore in Iola at that time. Mrs. Hale, a retired school teacher, taught in the Jefferson and Lincoln schools. She was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church, the National Teachers Association, past matron of Salem Chapter No. 4, Order of Eastern Star, and past president of the Social Order of Beauceant. Surviving are the widower of the home; a son, Allen Ray Hale of Wichita; a sister, Mrs. Josephine Tonkin of Webb City, Mo. and two grandchildren. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Wesley United Methodist Church with the Rev. E.E. Tillotson officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery at Humboldt. Anna A. HANSON, 71, 218 North Chestnut, died Sunday, March 18, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Wichita where she had been a patient six weeks. She had been seriously ill for three months. She was born Mary 28, 1907 in Severy. July 29, 1929 she married Henry F. Hanson in Girard. The Hanson moved to Iola from Wichita in 1945. Mr. Hanson died March 12, 1967. Mrs. Hanson operated the Tastee-Freeze on West Street for several years and was employed at the County Home and McAtee Nursing Home before her retirement. Mrs. Hanson was a member of the Iola Baptist Temple. Survivors include two sons, Howard Hanson of the home and Earl Hanson, Kansas City; two brothers Howard C. Riggs and Harold R. Riggs, both of Olathe and Mrs. Dorothy Patterson, Denver, and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, John Riggs. Interment will be in Highland Cemetery. Nellie E. HART, 77, of 432 East Monroe, died Wednesday, March 21, at Allen County Hospital. She was born Aug 7, 1901 in Odense. She moved from Richmond, Calif., to Chanute in 1970 and to Iola in 1972. Mrs. Hart was a member of the Iola Baptist Temple. On July 25, 1970 she married Dallas C. Hart in Chanute. He survives as do a daughter, Pearl Raab of Sumner, Wash., three brothers, Gilbert Crapson of Anacortes, Wash., Henry Crapson of Lodi, Calif., and Eugene Crapson, Escelsior, Mo.; two sisters, Audry Hart, Phoenix, and Mrs. Alta Lundine, rural Chanute; 25 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. 9:30 a.m. Mrs. Hastings was born Feb. 11, 19907, in Redlands, Calif., to Bruce
and Matilda Hutter Phillips. As a small child she moved with her parents to
Cherryvale. She was graduated from Cherryvale High School. She married Alfred
Leland Hastings on July 13, 1935, in Cherryvale. They moved to Humboldt in 1944.
Mrs. Hastings was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Survivors include four
sisters, Rita K. Bauer of Humboldt, Helen A Schabel of Cherryvale, Mary Alice
Duroy of De Moines, Iowa, and Dorothy Arnold, Chicago, Ill., and three brothers,
Hugh Phillips of Hutchinson, James Phillips of Coffeyville and Gene Phillips of
Cherryvale. A brother, Carl Phillips, and a sister, Mary Jo Schierlman, are
deceased. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Joseph Catholic Church

Harry, the six year old son of Mr. & Mrs. James HERYFORD, died Tuesday morning after an illness of but four days. The cause of death was scarlet fever. The burial took place Thursday afternoon at Mt. Hope cemetery. A younger son and a daughter of this family have been quite sick with the disease, but are getting well now. The family have the sympathy of many friends in this sad affliction. Mrs. T. E. HODDY died about
11 o'clock last Thursday night, January 25, at her home at 709 W. Mary Street.
The cause of her death was given as cerebral hemorrhage following a stroke of
paralysis. She was 61 years old. Her husband, Tom Hoddy, operates a service
station on West Mary street. She is survived by her husband, two sons, Roscoe
Hoddy of Eureka, and Fred Hoddy of Ponca City, Okla.; three sisters, Mrs. Jane
McGinnis of Iola, Mrs. Stella Lineback of Iola, and Mrs. Lena Ketchum of
Chanute. Funeral services were held from the Johnson Funeral Home Sunday
afternoon with Rev. R. R. Schreiber of the Evangelical church in charge of the

Mrs. Susan Clark HODGES, age 64 years, 6 months and 10 days, died Saturday evening at 7:45 at the home of her son, Walter Hodges, 404 N. Main street. Mrs. Hodges has been suffering from tuberculosis for a number of years but her condition became serious only a few days before her death. Mrs. Hodges has been living with her son for the past eight years during which time she has accumulated a large number of friends, who extend their sincere sympathy to the bereaved relatives. A daughter of the deceased, Mrs. Jurd, and husband, and two sisters of Mrs. Walter Hodges arrived Sundy from Rich Hill for the funeral. Mrs. Fay HORN, 86, of Iola died yesterday at Sterling Heights Manor. Her health had been failing for the past two years. She was born September 14, 1884 in Harvey County. She married Charles N. Horn January 16, 1907 in Newton and they moved to a farm east of LaHarpe in 1929. After Mr. Horn's death in 1950, Mrs. Horn moved to 308 North First in Iola where she lived until entering the nursing home. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Fred (Helen) Ensminger of Moran; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Cecil (Audrey) Horn of Iola; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. The funeral of Mrs. Ida HOSLEY was held Thursday afternoon at the Fairview chapel, conducted by Rev. Jud Woods. Mrs. Hosley had lived on the farm where she went as a bride 54 years ago. Mr. Hosley died in 1918. Their son, Harold Hosley, died in 1932. Their other son, Russell Hosley, and family have lived all the years on the farm where the farm house was built for two families over 50 years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Russell Hosley and four sons, with other relatives in Indiana and on the west coast, and the many friends Mrs. Hosley made in her community, all mourn her death. Thelma I. HUNT, 88, of Iola died Thursday, Sept. 18, at Windsor Place in Iola. She was born Dec. 25, 1914, in Chanute, the daughter of Elmer L and Alice F. Shipley Hunt. She started school in Oklahoma and then attended school in Humboldt and Chanute. In 1938, she moved to Topeka where she worked for Pelletiers Department Store for 33 years. She returned to Iola to make her home in 1981. She was a former member of the Veterans for Foreign Wars Auxilliary in Topeka and member of the First Assembly of God Church in Iola. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Vera Hunt, of Iola, and Mary Lou Byers, Manhattan; and by a great-nephew, Michael W. Byers, Serverna Park, Md. A brother, Lewis Hunt, died earlier. Columbus Robertson has just returned from Urbana where he buried his mother, Mrs. Abigail KITTERMAN, at the age of 81. She was the first white woman who lived in Elm Township. She settled on the Gifford farm 43 years ago, where not another house was to be found east of Lyman Rhodes farm "The Northrup Homestead" until the Fort Scott vicinity was reached. Moran Resident Dies After Long Illness. Mrs. S.C. KNIGHT, 80 years old, died at her home here Monday after a prolonged illness. Mrs. Hattie KUNKELMAN, 75, a resident of Iola for more than 30 years, died last night at the home of her daugher, Mrs. Fred Broom, at 628 S. Kentucky. Mrs. Kunkelman was born in Warren County, Ill., but had been a resident of Iola since 1910. She was a member of the Trinity Methodist church. Her husband preceded her in death several years ago. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Fred Broom of Iola and Mrs. Ralph Pettit of Humboldt; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Blanche Kunkelman of Wichita; and seven grandchildren. Oscar KUNKELMAN, son of Monroe and Mary Kunkelman, was born in Illinois, April 29, 1859, and passed away at his home in Iola at 8:16 o'clock Saturday evening, June 16, 1928, at the age of 69 years, 1 month and 18 days. He was united in marriage to Hattie E. Herring, February 24, 1890, at Columbus, Kansas. To this union were born four daughters and two sons. When a young man he was converted to the christian faith and joined the Methodist Episcopal church in which he has been a faithful worker. His membership was transferred to the Trinity M.E. church, Iola, Kansas, in 1918, and was continued there until his call to the Church Triumphant. Mr. Kunkelman had been in poor health for several years. Death came from complication hastened by erysipelas contracted ten weeks ago. He is survived by his wife, Hattie E. Kunkelman; four daughters, Mrs. William H. Palmer, of Gas City; Misses Edith, Mae and Clarice Kunkelman, and one son, Floyd Oscar of the home. One son, Earl Newton, preceded him in death in 1908 at the age of twelve years. Two grandchildren, Elmer and Elizabeth Palmer, two sisters, Mrs. Barbara White, of Centralia, Ill, Mrs. Mary Crandall, of Rolla, Mo, one brother-in-law, John W. Garritson, of Columbus, Kansas, and many ot her relatives and friends also survive. Funeral services were held at the home, 230 South Tennessee street, June 18, 1928, and his body was taken Tuesday to McCune, Crawford County, Kansas, where it was laid to rest beside that of his son, Earl. Funeral services were held from the Moran Methodist Church Wednesday afternoon for Mrs. Jessie LACEY, wife of W.E. Lacey of Moran who passed away at the Nevitt Hospital Sunday night. Mrs. Lacey had been in failing health for several years, with occasional periods of illness, the last being a prolonged on during which time she was removed to the hospital from her home. Mrs. Lacey was 64 years of age and was born at Bush City, where she grew to womanhood. She married in 1909 to Moreland McAdam of Mildred. They were the parents of four children, three of whom and Mr. McAdam precede her in death. In 1930 she was married to W.E. Lacey. They made their home west of Mildred until 1944 when they moved to Moran. Surviving her, in addition to Mr. Lacey, are a daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Ward, Mound City; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Letha W. Wood, of Santa Cruz, California, a sister, Lulu Freeman, of the home at Moran; a brother, Floyd McGinnis, Compton, California and two grandchildren. Rev. Robert Craig conducted the funeral service. Music was by Mrs. Dwight Barnes at the organ with two vocal numbers by a quartet, Mrs. Cecil Burkhead, Mrs. Arch Thomas, Dwight Barnes and Dale Elfin who sang, "I Came to the Garden Alone" and "The Old Rugged Cross." Casketbearers were: Linley Hills, P.B. Fundis, Dorrel Harris, Dale Elfin, Elmer Hite and Dwight Barnes. Interment was in the Fairview cemetery east of Mildred. Death was due to organic heart trouble - survived by a family of seven children - Widely known and esteemed. Mrs. W. H. Elmer E. LEWIS, 63, of 612 N Seventh, Humboldt, died Tuesday, Dec. 3, in the Pinecrest Nursing Home in Humboldt. The son of Roy L. and Sarah Metzget Lewis, he was born Nov. 3, 1922 on a farm in Coffey County. He grew up in the LeRoy and Neosho Falls area and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After serving in the Army, he returned to the Neosho Falls area where he worked as a welder and blacksmith. On Dec 4, 1966, he married Blanche Henry Lewis. They made their home in Humboldt. Mr. Lewis worked for the Humboldt Police Department for seven years and for Young Welding Shop in Chanute for 10 years before retiring a year ago. He was a member of the Humboldt Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge in Humboldt, the LeRoy Masonic Lodge, Order of the Eastern Star in Humboldt and all the York Rite Masonic bodies in Iola. Survivors include his wife, Blanche; a stepson, Bill Lewis of Yorktown, Texas; three step-daughters, Joan Diver of Augusta, Mary Wade and Lois Ridge, both of Humboldt; a brother, Clarence Lewis of Humboldt; a sister, Claramae Mathis, Mission, Texas; and nine step grandchildren. Two brothers, John and Roy Jr., are deceased. Funeral services of Lewis will be 2 p.m. Friday in the Neosho Falls United Methodist Church. Orin LILLY, 73, Moran, died yesterday at the Mercy Hospital in Fort Scott. Mr. Lilly was born April 28, 1893, at Coropolis, Pennsylvania. On February 19, 1927, he was married to Gladys Cheaney at Panhandle, Texas. He owned and operated an oil lease west of Moran for 30 years, retiring in 1959. He had been in ill health for the past several years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Iola. He is survived by his widow of the home; one son, Alvin O. Lilly, Iola; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Young, Iola, and Mrs. Florence Jones, Phoenix, one brother, Arthur Lilly, Iola, and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. at the Ralston-Hutton Chapel in Moran. The Rev. Roert Means will officiate and burial will be in Moran Cemetery. Mrs. August LINDBERG, long time resident of Savonburg vicinity, died at 2:10 P.M. Saturday at the home of her son, Julius Lindberg, rural Savonburg, at the age of 85 years. She had been in failing health for several years, and critically ill the past week. Christina Olson, daughter of the late John and Christina Olson, was born in Sweden, Feb. 8, 1864. At the age of 7 years, she cam with her mother, younger sister and brother, to America, where her father and older sister had established a home. In 1879 she was confirmed into the Lutheran church. Later that year she came to Kansas and made her home with her parents on a farm near Savonburg. June 8, 1880, she was married to August Lindberg, of Farlington, Kas., and they lived in Farlington until 1902, when they moved to the home near Savonburg. They were parents of three children, Julius, of Savonburg, Harry M. of Erie and Mrs. Edna Goff, of the home. Mr. Lindberg died on Jan. 15, 1923. She is survived by her children, grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Johanna Dahl, Elsmore; a brother Olaf Olson, of Savonburg, and other relatives. She had been for many years a member of Friends Home Lutheran church, of Savonburg, and the funeral service will be held there a 2 p.m. Tuesday with Rev. Otto Oleen officiating. Robert LINDSAY Dead Following Extended Illness. Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at the Methodist church for Robert Lindsey who died Thursday evening in Veterans hospital, Wichita. The Rev. Robert B. Kendall officiated at the services and special music was furnished by a quartet composed of Hannah Wood, Mary Smith, Mark Ellis and Lewis Irwin, who sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In the Garden" accompanied by Mrs. Lola Morgan. Casket bearers were Henry Mueller, Harry Massey, Howard Moore, Clyde Lowry, Charles Norris and Gus Kaufman. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery where the Algy Doty Post American Legion was in charge. Mr. Lindsey was born May 29, 1894 on a farm east of Humboldt and had spent his entire life in this community. On July 27, 1918 he married Ethel King of Humboldt, who died in 1934. He was a member of the American Legion, I.O.O.F., the Humboldt Volunteer Fire Department, a veteran of World War I, and for twenty-five years was superintendent of Utilities in Humboldt until ill health forced his retirement. He had been a patient in the Wichita hospital since last August. Survivors are three sons, Robert Wayne, Seminole, Okla., Charles, stationed at Wichita Falls, Tex., Harold of the home, two daughters, Mrs. Mary Edith Littlepage, Iola and Frances Eva Tweedy, Cambridge, Nebr., three brothers, Frank, John and Kenneth, Humboldt, two sisters, Mrs. Ray Collins, rural Humboldt and Mrs. Olin Duncan, Pittsburg, three grand daughters and four grandsons, several nieces and nephews. Kenneth E LINDSEY, age 80, a resident of Carol Stream for almost 40 years, died at home on Monday, April 25, 2006. He was born in Pittsburg, Kansas on July 31, 1924 to Kenneth O and Amy Isabelle Lindsey. He was raised in Humboldt, Kansas where he graduated from Humboldt High School in 1943. Ken was a veteran of the US Navy where he served on the USS Libra in the South Pacific. He attended Kansas Universith in Lawrence, KS. In 1948 he married Bernice Baker in Humboldt. For 33 years he worked as an electronics technician for Amoco. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Glen Ellyn and volunteered as a Special Olympic coach. In Humboldt, he was a past-master of the Masonic Lodge. He was instrumental in founding a special needs class in Chanute, Ks. He is survived by his wife, Bernice, two children, Kenneth D. of Carol Stream and Guyla (Tony) Kryka of Salem Twp., MI, and four grandsons, Anton Jr., Richard, Kyle and Jason Kryka. He was proceded in death by his parents, and two grandsons, John and James Kryka. Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 1, from 4 until 8 p.m. at the julgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Mrs. Silas LONG. Emily J. Pottinger Long was born at Crawfordsville, Ind., December 19, 1845, and departed this life at Iola, May 13, 1928, at the age of 82 year, 4 months and 13 days. She spent her girlhood days in Indiana. She was united in marriage to Silas Long, September 29, 1862, who departed this life December 21, 1926. This happy union extended over a period of 64 years. Ten children were born to this union. She leaves to mourn her going six living children: Elmer of Miami, Okla; Ora of Blue Mound; Dave, Irving, Walker and Mrs. Eva McKean, of Iola. Four children are dead, two dying in infancy; Lucky D., who died December 14, 1926, and W.A., who died April 12, 1928. There are 27 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Mrs. Long confessed her faith in Jesus Christ at the age of 15, uniting with the Christian church. During all these years she has been true to her Christ and very few church services were held that she was not present. She and her husband came to Kansas and homesteaded near Bronson where they lived for 31 years. They then moved to Gas City, Kans. where they made their home for 20 years. The last seven years were spent in Iola. Funeral services were held Monday at the Christian church, conducted by the Rev. J.Lee Releford. The services were unique and very impressive. The church choir sang some of the old hymns. Dr. Frantz offered and impressive prayer and the sermon was extemporaneous. A great number of scripture references were used, all of them selected from markings from her own thumb-worn Bible. The lesson showed a beautiful walk with Christ on earth, until the gates swung oopen in the next world. Mrs. Wade Adams sang as a solo "In the Garden." Burial was in Highland Cemetery. Clyde LOWRY, 79, Humboldt, died this morning at the Neosho Memorial Hospital in Chanute following a lengthy illness. Mr. Lowry was born October 11, 1893, at Harrisonville, Missouri. He came to Humboldt from Mountain Grove, Missouri, in 1923. He was a retired locomotive engineer, having been employed by the Monarch Cement Company. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, the American Legion and Wold War 1 Veterans. He was married to Edith Ellis on May 18, 1927, in Fort Scott. Survivors include his widow of the home; a daughter, Mrs. Marrian Crowl, Paola; two brothers, Capp Lowry and C.I. Lowry, both of Humboldt; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A son, Delbert, and a brother, Dallas, preceded him in death. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Humboldt United Methodist Church. The Rev LeRoy Foreman will officiate. Holland "Cap" LOWRY, 85, Humboldt died at the Neosho Memorial Hospital Saturday, January 31, 1987. He was born July 17, 1901 at Harris, Missouri to Delbert and Amanda (Baker) Lowry. Mr. Lowry came to Humboldt in the 1920's and on September 21, 1929, he married Fern Palmer at Fort Scott. Mr. Lowry was retired from Monarch Cement. He attended the Humboldt United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Fern, of the Home; one daughter, Nadine Garcia, Chanute; a step-daughter, Marian Mayhugh, Orange, California; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and one niece. He was preceded in death by one son, Herbert Roy Lowry, on April 16, 1978. Funeral services for Mr. Lowry were today (Tuesday), February 2, 1987 at the Humboldt United Methodist Church, Rev. John Jacob LUDLUM was born in Illinois August 31, 1877, and passed away November 1, 1968 at his home, 301 S. Colborn, Iola, at the age of 81 years. Papa John came to Kansas from Illinois in 1880 with his parents in a covered wagon, at the age of 3 years, coming from Fulton County, near Astoria. His parents settled on a raw prairie farm six miles southwest of Elsmore, Kansas, living in their covered wagon until a cabin could be built. The cabin was finished, plastered and all two years later. He lived in Allen County, Kansas, near Elsmore, most of his life. On February 26, 1902, he was united in marriage to Lela Jan Leffler at the bride's home. They then went to live in the farm home which John had furnished for his bride. In 1908 he was appointed County Commissioner to complete the unexpired term of his father, and was re-elected to several terms. In addition to farming, he was associated with his son, Merl, in a hardware store at Elsmore for a number of years. He served the Elsmore community in many ways. While a member of the School Board he signed the High School diploma for each of his three sons and also three daughters-in-law. He was a member of the Elsmore Methodist Church, serving as Sunday School Superintendent, and holding other church offices. He is survived by his wife, Lela Jane Ludlum, of the home; three sons, Ralph of Bartlesville, Okla, Earl of Pittsburg, Kas, and Merl of Estes Park, Colo.; six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and three brothers, Warrn of Chanute, Kas., Frank of Meeker, Okla, and Will Ludlum of Elsmore. W.S. LYTLE, son of Levi Mortimer and Mary Wright Lytle, was born in Illinois on 01-May-1858, and passed away at his home, 311 North street, Iola, Kansas, on August 23, 1932, at the age of seventy-four years, three months, and 23 days after an illness of several weeks. He came to Kansas with his widowed mother at the age of twelve years and settled in Allen county, in which place he attended school and grew to young manhood. He was married on June 9, 1889 at Iola to Miss Anna Montgomery. To this union were born seven children, two having died in infancy. Mr. Lytle is survived by his wife, Mrs. Anna Lytle, and four children, Mrs. C.S. Stuteville of Humboldt, C.M. Lytle, of Erie, Kansas; T.W. Lytle, and A.B. Lytle of Iola. One daughter, Mrs. Floy Tweedy, preceded him in death May 4, 1921. Also he is survived by ten grandchildren. At the time of his death Mr. Lytle was a member of the United Brethren church of Iola. Moreland McClure MCADAM, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam McAdam, was born near Kincaid August 20, 1886, and resided there until nine years old when the family moved to Kincaid. He resided there until 1908, when he came to Mildred where he has since resided. He was united in marriage to Miss Jessie McGinniss in 1909, and to this union four children were born, two boys and a girl preceded their father to the heavenly home. He was a man who loved his home and family. He was honest and trustworthy and a friend to all who knew him. He was patient and made a hard fight to conquer the disease that was slowly taking his life, but his efforts and those of his loved ones were in vain and the gates of immortality swung open and he entered "The Haven of Rest". He leaves to mourn for him his wife, his daughter Dorothy, his parents; four sisters, Mrs. Georgia Whitebread, of Nebraska, Mrs. Mabel Gibbs of Topeka, Mrs. Belle Norton, of Helena, Arkansas, Mrs. Vena LaMunyon, of Iola, and two brothers, Tom, of Tallent, Oklahoma, and John of Bayard; also a large number of other relatives and friends. The funeral services were conducted at the M.E. church Friday morning by Rev. J.C. Lane. A large crowd attended and the floral offerings were many and beautiful, showing the esteem in which he was held. He was laid to rest in the silent city of the dead at Fairview. The heart-broken relatives have the sympathy of all. May they find comfort in Him who said, "I am the Resurrection and the Life". The entire community was shocked Friday morning when it became known that Pauline MCADAM had passed away. While she had been ill for a long time she was thought to be getting along nicely until Thursday. She was a sweet child with a sunny disposition and will be much missed, not only by her loved ones, but the Sunday school and school and by all who knew her. Mildred Pauline McAdam, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Moreland M. McAdam, was born near Bush City, September 10, 1912, and died at her home in Mildred, May 23, 1924, at the age of 11 years, 7 months, and 13 days. She leaves her father and mother, her little sister, Dorothy, her grandparents and a host of other relatives and friends who said. "Suffer the little children to come unto Me for of such is the kingdom of heaven". The funeral service was conducted at the home, Sunday afternoon, by Rev. Garretson, and she was laid to rest in Fairview cemetery. Mrs. Mary Angeline MCCRACKEN died Saturday night at the age of 92. She had been ill for a lengthy period and has been making her home with her daughter, Mrs. Ira Moses, 115 South First. Mrs. McCracken was born in Davies County, Ind., but first moved to this community at the age of 11, when her parents established residence at Leanna. Later she lived at Pittsburg but has been an Iola since 1913. She was the widow of L. F. McCracken, who died many years ago. Mrs. McCracken was an active member of the Christian church. Funeral services for her will be held at the church at 2 pm Wednesday, conducted by the Rev. Tom Palmer. Burial will be in the Leanna cemetery. The body will lie in state at the Waugh Funeral Home until the hour of the service. Survivors include another daughter, Mrs. J.F. Death of George MCELHENEY. George McElheney, an old time Humboldt boy of the early day, passed away at his home in Wichita, late last week. His funeral was held Monday afternoon and burial was in Wichita. Acute indigestion is given as the cause of his death. George was a pupil in the Humboldt school in the days of the old stone school house and the McElheney family is well and favorably known by citizens of those days. One-hundred-year-old Frankie L. MCGREW, former resident of Gas, died Thursday, April 28, 1994, at Tara Gardens. The daughter of John and Alvira Canaday Forrester, she was born Dec. 2, 1893, in Blue Mound. She moved to Gas in 1909. On Oct. 14, 1917, she married Ora C. "Casrl" McGrew and they made their home in Gas. Mr. McGrew died Sept. 15, 1978. Mrs. McGrew was a longtime member of the Gas United Methodist Church. She played the piano for services there for more than 60 years, until about 10 years ago. In addition to her church work, she enjoyed growing flowers. Survivors include two sons, Gerald McGrew of Tulsa and Jack McGrew, Iola; two daughters, Mrs. John (Florice) Ford of Springfield, Mo., and Mrs. Charles (Shirley) Menzie, LaHarpe; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Two brothers, five sisters and a great-grandchild also are deceased. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Waugh-Yokum and Friskel Memorial Chapels, 16 N. Buckeye. The Rev. Russell Eugene "Gene" MCHENRY, 74, died Saturday, Nov. 2, in Bella Vista, Ark. He was born May 10, 1928, in Iola, the son of Russell E. and Ruth E. Lam McHenry. He was a Merchant Marine and later joined the U.S. Navy, retiring after 23 years of service as chief machinist mate. Following his retirement from the Navy he was employed by San Diego Gas & Power Co. He was married to Sersuko Ito in 1967 in Japan. She is deceased. The McHenry family moved to Clinton, Mo., where he worked for the Kansas City Power & Light Co. at the Montrose station. They later moved to Appleton City, Mo. He started the fifth and sixth grade little league football program sponsored by the Appleton City Optimist Club in 1978 and coached until 1997. He also was active in the Optimist's baseball and softball program. He had coached and traveled with his son, Terry, to motocross races. He was a member of the Appleton City Council from 1994 through 1996 serving as mayor protem for part of his term. McHenry was a member of the Appleton City Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 11242 and Masonic Lodge No. 412 A.F. & A.M, York and Scottish Rite. He was a member of the Ararat Shrine. He liked to travel, collect donations for the circus and perform in parades for the Shrine. He earned more than 20 Crown Jewels through his service. In April 2002 he was presented a citation of honor for distinguished service to the Shriners. He is survived by a son, Daniel Eugene of Chula Vista, Calif.; two sisters, Janice and her husband, Paul Smith, of Bella Vista, and Donna and her husband, Art Conway, of Amarillo, Texas; two grandchildren; and four nephews and nieces. Two sons, Toshi and Terrence Eugene, died earlier. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Hill & Son Funeral Home in Appleton City. Masonic services were by the Appleton City Lodge No. 412 A.F. & A.M. The Legion of Honor Rose Ceremony was by the Ararat Shrine Service. The Revs. John Ketcher and Frank Claiborne officiated. Interment was in the Appleton City Cemetery. Arnold B. MICHAEL, 81, 8 1/2 West Jackson, died this morning at the Allen County Hospital. Mr. Michael was born at Blue Mound, January 4, 1889, and had lived most of his life in Iola. He was a retired LeHigh Portland Cement Company employee. Mr. Michael server in the Army in World War I and he was a member of the American Legion here. His wife, Pearl, died in 1952. He is survived by a son, Donald Michael, Iola. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Waugh-Yokum Funeral Home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. An Obituary of Mrs. Rebecca Mazona MORGAN. Miss Rebecca Mazona Harvey was born May 14, 1843, in North Carolina, Halifax County, near Halifax in 1844 and moved with her parents to Virginia in 1852, then moving with her parents to Jeffersonville, Ind. At the age of 20 years she united with the Methodist church and has ever lived a devoted Christian. In the year 1871 she moved with her parents to Bourbon county, Kansas. In 1873 she was united in marriage to J T Morgan. In the year 1911 she moved with her husband to Gas City, Kansas, where she resided until death. Our step-mother was 79 years, 9 months and 4 days old. She leaves to mourn her loss one brother, James Harvey of Gas City, one step-son, J D Morgan of Redfield, Kans., and one step-daughter, Rebecca Hixon of Bronson, Kans. and a number of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. B.W. Hugg at the Gas City M.E. Church Monday morning at 10 o'clock. Interment was made in the Gas City cemetery. Survived by his wife; a son, Christopher L. Johnson of Cameron, Mo.; three daughters, Sharon Ann Morgan of Alluwe, Okla., Cheryl L. Dillow of Iola and Cathy S. Stueckemann of Jacksonville, Fla.; three brothers, Hubert of Siloam Springs, Ark., Tom of Coffeyville and Jim of Wichita; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Bernard N. "Bing" NOLAN of Whitewater, a former resident of the Colony area, died Monday, April 30, in Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. He was 75. He was born Nov. 5, 1908, at Lane. Before his retirement he as a transport truck driver for the Missouri-Pacific Railroad. He was a member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Independence, and a 53-year member of the Knights of Columbus at Garnett. On April 21, 1934, he married Frances S. Swickard at Winfield. She survives as do a son, James, Whitewater, two daughters, Frances Claire Dixon of Orlando, Fla, and Michelle Ann Nolan, Garland, Texas, two brothers, Joseph M. Nolan of Iola and William D. Nolan, Wichita Falls, Texas; a sister Mary Agnes Hillyer, Kansas City; and 12 grandchildren. The funeral Mass will be 11 a.m., Thursday in St. Theresa's Church at Westphalia. The Rev. Olaf A. OLSON was born in Sweden on March 14, 1873. He died at LaHarpe, Kansas, March 5, 1949, at the age of 75 years, 11 months, and 18 days. Mr. Olson's early life was spend in Sweeden(sic) and Scotland. For many years he was a sailor or as he expressed it, "a sea-faring man." In about 1919 he moved, with his family, to Kansas and settled on a farm west of Savonburg. In about 1921, his wife, Elizabeth, died, and shortly after this, Mr. Olsen moved to Savonburg where he has since resided. He had been in failing health for some time, and critically ill the last few days. Brother Olson held a Life-membership in the Masonic Lodge in Scotland, transferring his membership to Virginia Lodge, A.F.&A.M. of Savonburg, Kansas, in 1946, having been a Mason for nearly 43 years. He was a member of the Friend's Home Lutheran Church, Savonburg, Kansas, and until his health failed, a faithful attendant. The only surviving relative, so far as is known, is a cousin, Mrs. Elof Johnson of Emporia, Kans. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at Friend's Home Lutheran Church, conducted by Rev. Otto Oleen. Mrs. Earl Munson, M.E. Howard, Mr. and Mrs. C.M. Barsby sang "Rock of Ages," "What a Friend" and "Abide with Me", accompanied by Mrs. Earl Ericson. Casket bearers were Verle and John Nelson, Geo. A. Olson, Hans Peterson, Charles Hawkinson and Lawrence Johnson. Burial was in the Swedish cemetery. Source: Savonburg Record, Friday, March 11, 1949
Glenn H. ORTH, 67, died Sunday evening, March 18, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Mr. Orth had been ill for several months. He was born Oct. 4, 1911 in Humboldt. He was a retired dairy farmer and had lived in Woodson County until he moved to Humboldt three years ago. On Feb 12, 1938 he married Ruth M. Edy in Harrisonville, Mo. She survives as do a son, James E. Orth of Great Bend; two daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Roberts of Wichita and Mrs. Nancy Sue Kaiser of Winter Park, Fla.; two brothers, Virgil Orth of Phoenix and Ernest Orth, Humboldt; three sisters, Mrs. Pearl Myer and Mrs. Mildred O'Neal, both of Phoenix and Mrs. Mable Myer, Lawrence, and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother. Darryl Roberts, son-in-law, will officiate at the funeral service at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Price-Stanley Funeral Home in Humboldt.
