WIL MATTHIAS, SHANNON MERCHANT SUCCUMBS (June, 1945)

William Matthias, 64, merchant and elevator operator at Shannon died at

3:15 o'clock this morning at his home after being seriously ill for six

weeks. He was a life-long resident of Atchison county.



Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Mark's Lutheran

Church in Atchison, conducted by the Rev. S. A. Hamrick and the Rev. A.

W. Malin. Interrment will be in Mount Vernon. His body will be at the

Stanton & Stanton mortuary until 1 p.m. Monday when it will be taken to

the church to lie in state until the time of services.



Mr. Matthias was born April 5, 1877, near Huron. January 23, 1907 he

was united in marriage to Miss Anna Delfelder. The family lived in

Atchison until moving to Shannon in 1932.



Surviving besides the widow are two daughters, Miss Agnes Matthias of

the home and Mrs. Harry Clark, Shannon; two brothers, Arthur Matthias,

Atchison and Charles Matthias, Huron; a sister, Mrs. William Graner,

Atchison, and three grandchildren, Harry Bill, Barbara Jean and Dorcas

Lea Clark


MATTHIAS RITES TOMORROW



Funeral Services for Arthur Matthias, Sr. will be held at the Sawn-Dyer

Chapel at 2 p.m. tomorrow, the Rev. Richard Dunning officiating. Burial

will be in the family lot in Mount Vernon Cemetary.



Arthur Matthias was born on a farm southeast of Huron April 28, 1875, a

son of Frederick and Agnes Bodendoerfer Matthias, attended High Prairie

school, and in 1901 started farming for himself on a farm a mile east of

his parents' home.



On October 20, 1909 he married Miss Emma Delfelder of Effingham, who

passed away four years ago. In 1916 they purchased the Leo Dagenais

farm and orchard south of Atchison where he conducted an extensive

business in apples and other fruits until they moved back to their

former farm in the spring of 1952 because of failing health.



When he lived near Atchison he was a member of the Float School Board a

number of years. All his active life he had been an enthusiastic worker

in the interests of farmers and fruit growers.



He leaves his daughter, Mrs. Minnie Berges, a son Arthur F. Matthias,

Atchison and a number of nieces and nephews.


MATTHIAS RITES HELD AT LOCAL CHAPEL



Funeral services for Mrs. Emmna Delfelder Matthias, 74, wife of Arthur

Matthias, prominent Atchison county farmer and orchardist, who died at 3

a.m. Sunday at her home three miles north of Lancaster, were held at 2

p.m. today at the Sawn-Dyer chapel, the Rev. Robert Cocher, pastor of

St. John's Lutheran Church at Lancaster, officiating. Burial was in

Mount Vernon Cemetary. Pallbearers were Wallace Ashcraft, Luther

Blodgett, Carl Matthias, John Scholz, Walter Schwarzer and Leslie

Delfelder.



Mrs. Matthias was born on a farm a mile west of Effingham August 15,

1879, a daughter of Frederick and Anna Wagner Delfelder, early Atchison

county settlers. She attended the Effingham elementary school and the

Atchison County High School, and in 1902 came to Atchison, where she was

head milliner in the Lake Store until her marriage to Arthur Matthias

October 20, 1909. They went to housekeeping on the Matthias homestead

three miles north of Lancaster, where they resided until 1917, when they

purchased the farm in the Float Neighborhood.



In 1930 her husband, Arthur Matthias, set out a large orchard and for

years maintained the well known Matthias Fruit Farm. They sold the farm

there two years ago to the Schuele Brothers and moved back to the

homestead north of Lancaster.



She had been in failing health about six months and her condition had

been critical the past three months. She was a life-long member of the

Lutheran church. During the years on the fruit farm she made a wide

acquaintance she greatly enjoyed. Her pleasing personality and charming

manner endeared her to a great many friends. During her long illness,

she was a patient sufferer, considerate and appreciative.



Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Mrs. O. F. Berges,

the former Miss Minnie Matthias, of Mission, Kansas; a son, Arthur F.

Matthias, Atchison, a grandson, Frederick Barton Matthias, Atchison; two

sisters, Mrs. Emil Ebner, Chadron, Neb., and Mrs. Louis Brenner,

Warrensburg, Mo., and a brother, Frederick Delfelder, LosAngeles,

Calif. Three borthers, George Delfelder of Effingham, John Delfelder of

Chadron, Nebraska and Jacob Delfelder, Riverton, Wyoming. A sister,

Mrs. William Matthias of the Shannon community preceeded her in death.



Instead of floral offerings the family requested that contributions to

the cancer fund be made at the Sawn-Dyer funeral home.




Obit sometime in 1910



FREDERICK MATTHIAS, SR. Age 76 years, died at the home of his daughter,

Mrs. Julius Peterson, 1328 South Eighth Street, at 8 o'clock this

morning of paralysis, after a three months' illness. His home was at

Lancaster, but he came to Atchison two months ago to receive medical

attention.



Frederick Matthias was one of the characters who started with nothing

and amassed a small fortune in Kansas land. He was born in Germany,

coming to America in 1852. He first located at Madison, Wis., where he

married Miss Agnes Bodendoerfer. They came west and located in Atchison

about 1860. He was a barber, and for seven years conducted a shop on

Commerical, between Third and Fourth streets. He was a good barber and

prospered. In 1867 he bought a half section of land near Huron for $400

and moved onto it. He kept adding a quarter and an eighty until he

owned a section. Of this amount, 560 acres are still in the family. It

is worth $100 an acre. Besides the Huron land, he owned a quarter

section near Effingham, and a section in Osborne county. In 1901 he

divided up the home farm among his children and moved to Lancaster and

began to take life easy. Besides his widow he leaves the following

children: Mrs. Julius Peterson, of Atchison, Mrs. W. H. Graner and Fred

Matthias, of Lancaster; George, Charley, Arthur and William Matthias, of

Huron; Mrs. Jacob Juencke, of Farmington, and Mrs. Rudolph Luehe, of

Perry Oklahoma. There are also thirty-one grandchildren and three

great-grandchildren. All the children are in Atchison for the funeral.

After a short service at the home of Mrs. Peterson, Sunday, the body

will be taken to Lancaster on the train, leaving Atchison at 11:45 a.m.

The final funeral services will be in the Lancaster cemetary. The Rev.

Carl Krueger will officiate at the funeral. Mr. Matthias was always an

honorable man. No better citizen ever lived in Lancaster township.






A PIONEER PASSSES AWAY



Mrs. Agnes Matthias, age 86 years and seven months, died at the home of

her daughter, Mrs. W. H. Graner, 711 Green Street, Friday evening from

complications and old age, having been confined to her room for six

months. Mrs. Matthias was born in Germany, November 30, 1834. and came

to America in 854, locating in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She was married

to Frederick Matthias in 1855, who died in this city January, 1910.

Mrs. Matthias came to Atchison April 1861, lived her six years and in

the spring of 1867, moved to a farm north of Lancaster, which her sons

now own.



The following children survive her: Fred Matthias, of Lancaster, George

and Charley Matthias, of Huron; Mrs. Jacob Juencke and Will Matthias, of

Farmington; Arthur Matthias and Mrs. W. H. Graner of Atchison; Mrs.

Rudolph Lueke, of Perry, Oklahoma and Mrs. Minnie Peterson of Atchison.

Also a daughter who preceded her in death. A short service at the home

of her daughter, Mrs. Graner at 711 Green Street at 1 p.m. Monday

conducted by Rev. Heinz. Pallbearers at the Lutheran Church, Lancaster,

service will be her grandsons; A.J.Matthias, Gus Juencke, Louis Graner,

Herbert Matthias, Fred Juencke, and Max Matthias. Requested, no

flowers.

MASTERS, George Edward, Sr. Obituary

Atchison Daily Globe - April 2, 1935



A lifetime resident of Atchison, GEORGE EDWARD MASTERS, 59, well known paperhanger and painter, died at 4:30 o'clock this morning at his home, 1121 M Street. Mr. Masters had been ill for the last few months and in a serious condition during the last two weeks.

Mr. Masters was stricken shortly before Christmas and his condition had gradually grown worse since that time. He had been a patient at a Kansas City Hospital on two different occasions.

George Masters was a most likeable man. He was neighborly and friendly with everyone he contacted and made many friends. He spent much of his time with his family and was devoted to his home. He was interested in civic affairs and while not being boisterous about his activities and was one of Atchison's good citizens.

Born in Atchison November 14, 1875, Mr. Masters spent his entire life here. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. "TED" (Edward Benjamin) MASTERS, pioneer residents of Atchison. He attended the Catholic parochial school, which at that time was located on North Second Street where the present new St. Benedict's Grade School stands.

Mr. Masters had been in the paperhanging business in Atchison for 35 years. He was first connected here with the firm of Meinert and later with the J. H. Thaden Co., for which firm he worked until 10 years ago when he went into business for himself. He had developed a good business until his health failed him.

Mr. Masters married EMMA BUSH of Atchison on November10, 1900.

Mrs. Masters survives, as does one son, George Masters, Jr. of Atchison. He is also survived by five brothers, Alf Masters of Atchison, James Masters, Fred Masters, and Charles Masters, all of Louisville, Neb., and Art Masters of Fremont, Neb., and one sister, Mrs. Fred (Caroline) Holtz of Springfield, Neb.

He was a member of the W.O.W. organization.

Definite funeral arrangements had not been made today. The body is at the Stanton & Stanton Mortuary. Interment will be at Mt. Vernon Cemetery

MASTERS, (LYONS), MARY nee SCOTT Obituary

Atchison Daily Globe and Courier in Nebraska May, 1929



Her many Atchison friends will be grieved to learn of the death of Mrs. Mary MASTERS LYONS, who died at noon Saturday (May 25, 1929) at her home in Louisville, Neb., where she moved about 20 years ago, after spending most of her life here in Atchison. She died at the age of 82, and had been failing in health for a year. Prior to that she had enjoyed good health, and her illness was simply the result of her age. A remarkable thing about Mrs. Lyons that, at the age of 82, she died with every tooth in her head.

Mrs. Lyon's maiden name was MARY SCOTT. She was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on May 1,1847. She came to America with her parents, when she was 4 years old.

She married her first husband, EDWARD B. MASTERS, on Jan. 12, 1871 in Atchison. He died 33 years ago, leaving her with eight children, the youngest one two years old. Mrs. Masters reared them and was a splendid mother.

In the year 1894 she was married to Joseph Lyons, who preceded her in death in the year 1913, in Omaha, Neb. For the past 18 years she had made her home with her son, James, and family in Louisville.

She was a member of the Baptist Church in Atchison and after coming to Louisville; she united with the Christian Church.

The funeral occurred on Monday afternoon from the M. E. Church the pastor, Rev. E. P. Booher officiating. The pallbearers were her grandsons.

After the services, the remains were taken to Atchison to the home of her son, George Masters, where services were held on Tuesday afternoon, with Rev. J. H. Woodsum, pastor of the Baptist Church in charge. Burial in Mount Vernon Cemetery in the family lot beside her first husband and son. The pallbearers will be her six sons.

Her youngest son Noble, died 19 years ago. The other children are: Mrs. Fred (Caroline) Holtz, of Springfield, Neb.; Arthur Masters, Papillion, Neb.; James, Fred, and Charlie Masters of Louisville, Neb.; George and Fred of Atchison. One sister, Mrs. James Siep, of Canon City, Colorado, twenty grandchildren and five great grandchildren survive her.

Irene E. Masters, 83, Gladstone, passed away Sunday, May 28, 1995, at North Kansas City Hospital. Memorial services were held at Newcomer's White Chapel. Cremation. Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Cross Lutheran Church or donors choice.

Mrs. Masters was born March 1, 1912 in Atchison, Kansas. She was a telephone operator for 22 years at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Kansas City, Mo. and retired in 1976.

She was a member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church, former member of Magic Valley Square Dance Association and life member of Rio Grand Square Dance Club.

She married GEORGE E. MASTERS, August 2, 1931 in Atchison, Kansas. He preceded her in death December 28, 1991, in Harlingen, Tx. Her son, Carl E. Masters also precedes her in death, in 1990.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and James M. Brewster, Shawnee, Ks.; brother, Herman Schmeling, Pueblo, Co.; sister, Marie Halstenberg, Gladstone, Mo.; two grandsons, Bill Brewster, Overland Park, Ks. and James A. Brewster, Dallas Tx.; and a great-grandson, Zachary Brewster, Overland Park, Ks.

MASTERS, Emma Charlotte, nee Busch Obituary

Mrs. Emma C. Masters, 93, 1121 M Street, died at her home Friday evening (Dec. 20th). She had been a resident of Atchison since she was a young child.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Robert Ziegler, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Vernon Cemetery.

Kenneth Masters, Ronald Masters, Gary Masters, Harold Masters, Jr., Eugene Carstensen, and Ralph Weik will be pallbearers.

The Casket will lie in state at the church an hour before the services. Members of the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the Stanton Mortuary.

It is suggested by the family that memorials may be donations to the Trinity Lutheran School endowment fund.

Mrs. Masters was born Feb. 7, 1881, at Portsmouth, Ohio, a daughter of CHARLES and THERESA PAPST BUSH, and came to Atchison with her parents.

She attended Trinity Lutheran School and was confirmed at the Trinity Lutheran Church.

On Nov.10, 1900, she and GEORGE MASTERS, Sr., of Atchison were married. He died April 2, 1935.

Mrs. Masters was employed at Dilgert's for 18 years where she helped with the baking and frying until that business was closed. She worked at Jack's Café for 12 years until she retired in 1968.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and of the Corinthian Society of the church for many years.

Surviving her are one son, George Masters, Grandview, Mo.; one sister, Mrs. Ruby (Bush) Masters, Atchison; two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

A brother and sister preceded her in death. Interment will be at Mt. Vernon Cemetery.

MASTERS, George E. Obituary

George E. Masters, 81, Harlingen, Texas, formerly of Atchison, died Dec. 28,1991 at a Harlingen health-care center. The body was cremated. Services will be Saturday at the White Chapel Funeral Home, Gladstone, Mo. Visitation will be from 10 -11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the charity of the donor's choice.

Mr. Masters was born in Atchison and moved to Harlingen in1981. He had retired from Holiday Inns as head of maintenance at Kansas City Downtown Airport in 1975. He had been a skating instructor at the Grandview, Mo., Roller Rink from1953 to1975.

Mr. Masters was a member of the Rio Grande Club, past president of the Magic Valley Square Dance Club and a former member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Grandview.

He was preceded in death by a son, Carl E. Masters, in 1990.

Survivors include: his wife, Irene E. Masters at the home, a daughter, Ruth Brewster, Shawnee; and two grandchildren.

MASTERS, Edwards Benjamin "Ted" Obituary

Atchison Daily Globe - July 16,1892



E. B. Masters, aged 52 years, died at his home, corner of Walnut and L streets, today, of bowel complaint. Mr. Masters was a painter by trade, and had been ill a week. A post-mortem examination will be held to determine positively the direct cause of his death.

Mr. Masters was born in England, but came to America tewnty-one years ago. He leaves a widow and eight children; also, one brother, A. H. Masters, of Atchison, who is the only one living in a family of twenty-one children. The funeral will occur from the Baptist Church at 2 o'clock tomorrow.

July 18, 1892

The funeral of E. B. Masters yesterday afternoon was largely attended. He belonged to the order of the Knights of Maccabees, and the family is entitled to a snug sum from the order.

MASTERS, Harold E. Obituary

Atchison Globe Wed., July 14, 1982



Harold E. MASTERS, 70, 1122 Division, died at Atchison Hospital Tuesday evening.



Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Stanton Chapel with the Rev. Robert Ziegler, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 - 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Stanton Mortuary. The family suggests memorials to the Trinity Lutheran Church building fund.



Mr. Masters was born in Atchison, the son of ALFRED AND RUBY BUSCH MASTERS. He graduated from Trinity Lutheran Grade School.



On Feb. 7, 1931, he married WILMA HORTON of Huron. He worked as an auto mechanic in his own garage after their marriage.



During World War II, he worked as a machinist for Locomotive Finished Materials (LFM). Later, he worked at Mc Donald Motors for a number of years. For a time, Mr. Masters worked for Miller Chevrolet. At the time of his retirement in 1975, he was working at the Defense Industrial Plant Facility (DIPEF) south of Atchison.



He maintained an interest in farming and owned a farm north of town. An avid hunter and fisherman, he was considered and excellent marksman.



Survivors include his wife, Wilma, of the home; one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Delores) Buntz, Tyler, Texas; one son, Harold W. Masters, Kansas City, Mo.; one brother, Alfred "Buck" Masters, Kansas City, Kan.: his mother Ruby Masters.

MASTERS, Mrs. Harold (Wilma K.) nee Horton Obituary

Wilma K. Masters, 80, 1122 Division St., died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1993, at the Atchison Hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Robert Ziegler officiating. Burial will be in Mount Vernon cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. Friday until time of the services at the church. Memorial contributions are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Church or the Mount Vernon Cemetery Association.

Mrs. Masters worked as a dietician for the Atchison High School for 10 years.

She was born July 4, 1913, in Huron, the daughter of WILLIAM and NINA STARNES HORTON. She attended the Huron Grade School and graduated from Huron High School.

Mrs. Masters was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the Altar Guild, Rebecca Circle, the XYZ Club, Adult Bible Class, all of the church. She enjoyed gardening, doing yard work and was active in church.

She married Harold E. MASTERS on Feb. 7, 1931. He preceded her in death on July 13, 1982.

Survivors include a son, Harold W. Masters, Gladstone, Mo.; a daughter, Delores Buntz, Tyler, Texas; two brothers, Junior Horton, Atchison, and Charlie Horton, Hutchison; four sisters, Eva Geritz and Mary Alice Downing, Atchison; Naomi Dorei, Bakersfield, California; and four grandchildren.

MASTERS, Mrs. Alfred H. (Ruby) nee Busch

Ruby Louise Masters, 92, Cherokee Lodge, Oskaloosa, formerly of Atchison, died Saturday evening at Cherokee Lodge.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Mount Vernon Cemetery, the Rev. Robert Ziegler, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3:30 Tuesday afternoon at Becker - Stanton Mortuary. Memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Church or Mount Vernon Cemetery Endowment Fund.

Mrs. Masters was born July 18, 1894, in Atchison, the daughter of Charles and Theresa Marie Pabst Busch. She attended Atchison schools and worked as a nurse aid and at Snowden Mize Company.

She married Alfremaloneys7193@gmail.com Masters on Dec. 8, 1909. He preceded her in death on July 9, 1949.

She entered Cherokee Lodge Nursing Home in Oskaloosa in August 1985.

Mrs. Masters enjoyments in life were needlework, crocheting and yard work.

Surviving are a daughter-in-law, Wilma Masters, Atchison, six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Alfred H. "Buck" Masters in May 1986 and Harold Masters, in July 1982, tree brothers and two sisters.

Mrs. Simon Mihm



Funeral services for Mrs. Simon Mihm, 84, will be held at 9 a.m. tomorrow at St. Joseph's Church in Nortonville. Burial will be at the church cemetery. The body is at the Warren funeral home in Nortonville, where the rosary will be recited at 8 o'clock this evening.

Pallbearers will be Ray schrick, Sam Noll, Miles Ellerman, George Bertels, william Schneider, and Leonard Noll.

Mrs. Mihm, who suffered a heart attack last Tuesday, died at 5 o'clock Saturday afternoon at her home, 4 � miles East of Nortonville. She had lived on the same farm since her marriage.

A daughter of Charles and Catherine Hass Schneider, Catherine Schneider was born at lansing Nov. 3, 1867. She was a small child when her parents moved to the Mooney Creek community. Sept. 24 1889 she was married to Simon Mihm.

Surviving are her husband; five sons, Paul, Linus, and Norbert Mihm, all of Nortonville, Andrew Mihm of the home, and Albert Mihm of Atchison; two daughters, Mrs. Henry Worland (Ella Nora), Topeka, and Mrs. Tony Kilkenny (Alice), Atchison; three sisters, Mrs. Christine Stoeffler, Kansas City, Mrs. Martha Culver, Long Beach, CA, and Mrs. Rose Chaffin, Los Angeles; a brother, Joseph Schneider, Leavenworth; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
