Baker, Nicholas
Nick Baker Dies at Medicine Lodge -- Nicholas Baker, 56, died on Tuesday, April 21, in Medicine Lodge, Kans. Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 24th, 1970 at the Christian church in Medicine Lodge at 2 p.m. Interment will be in the Wilmore Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Gwendolyn of Medicine Lodge, daughter, Cherry Ann Smith, Cortez, Colo., a son, Joe Baker Wichita; two brothers, Rod and Edward of Wilmore, and his mother, Mrs. Llewellyn Baker of Coldwater. -- Western Star, April 23, 1970. Blickhahn, Ana E.
Sad News for Dr. Ayers -- Mrs. Ana E. Blickhahn, of Walsenburg, Colorado, died November 9th, of pneumonia. She was the oldest daughter of Dr. Geo. W. Ayers, of this city, and the news of her death came with a great shock to the father. The following account of her death is taken from the Walsenburg Yucca: Mrs. Anna E. Blickhahn, wife of Judge Henry Blickhahn, died at the family home in this place at 3:30 Sunday afternoon, Nov. 9, 1902, of pneumonia. Funeral services were held at the house at 2:30 Monday afternoon under the auspices of the order of the Eastern Star of which she was a member. Mrs. Blickhahn was born in DeRuyter, N. Y. and at the time of her death was 40 years, 7 months and 17 days old. She leaves a husband, father, brother, sister and six children to mourn her loss. Her father and brother reside in Kansas and her sister, Mrs. Frank McHarg, resides here. Her children are Mrs. Geo. Lillis, Katherine, Edna, George and Harry, all of whom are living here. During her long residence in Walsenburg Mrs. Blickhahn has made many warm friends who will feel her loss keenly. -- Barber County Index, November 19, 1902. (SB)

Bristow, W.G.
W. G. Bristow Dead. -- The Citizens of Medicine Lodge were shocked on receiving a telephone message from Pratt Saturday announcing the death of W. G. Bristow. He died of pneumonia very suddenly. For a number of years Mr. Bristow was in the hotel business in Medicine Lodge and later at Kiowa. Hence he was known by nearly every citizen of Barber county. He removed to Pratt about a year ago was engaged in the hotel business in that city. Funeral services were held in Pratt Sunday. Mr. Bristow was a member of the Woodmen and Workmen lodges in this city and carried $2000 in each. -- Barber County Index, January 28, 1903. (SB)

Chase, Mrs. Hannah (Waldron) Chase
Waldron Chase's Mother Dead. -- Waldron Chase sent word to his family Sunday from Manchester, New Hampshire, that his mother, Mrs. Hannah Waldron Chase, died that morning. Mr. Chase left a few weeks ago to visit her but had not known of her sickness. When he arrived there he found her bedfast. Mrs. Chase was 74 years of age. Her husband died several years ago. Waldron was their only child. His friends sympathize with him in the parting. -- Barber County Index, February 11, 1903. (SB)

Chase, Mrs. Waldron
MRS. WALDRON CHASE DIED MONDAY -- Mrs. Waldron Chase, formerly of this city, died at her home in Colorado Springs, on Monday, February 22nd, at the age of 81 years. Mrs. Chase, with Mr. Chase, who preceded her in death several years ago, spent many years in Medicine Lodge, which was their home until 1915 when they moved to Colorado. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. H. D. Fair, and two grandchildren, Waldron Fair and Mrs. Diana Vickery, besides a number of other relatives and many friends. Funeral services were held in Colorado Springs on Wednesday afternoon, February 24th at two o'clock and interment was made there. -- Barber County Index, February 25, 1937. (SB)

Conkling, Clark
Miss Clark Conkling Dead -- Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Hall left on Tuesday of last week for Lyons, Kansas, in response to a telegram bearing the sad news of the death of their niece, Miss Clark Conkling. Miss Conkling was also a niece of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Adams of this city and the Stone brothers who reside here. She had been in very poor health, for several years, her recovery at no time seemed possible, still her death, attributed to heart failure, came very suddenly and unexpectedly. She was about twenty-three years of age and in her visits with relatives in this community, made many friends who extend deepest sympathy to the sorrowing parents and relatives. The funeral services were conducted from the family residence to Lyons, on Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Hall returned home Friday morning. -- Barber County Index, December 23, 1914. (SB)

Connelly, Ora B.
Died - Near Medicine Lodge Kansas, Ora B. Connelly, infant daughter of W. R. and Hattie Connelly. Born February 15, 1879. Died August 26, 1879, aged 6 months and 11 days. -- The Medicine Lodge Cresset, August 29, 1879. (SB)

Clayton, William
DIED -- On Tuesday, of this week, at the residence of John Davis, Mr. William Clayton. The deceased left Illinois a short time ago, in hope of regaining his health, and while visiting in the eastern part of the state, took the measles, from the effects of which he never recovered. Mr. Clayton was a distant relative of Mr. John Davis and Rev. Mulkey of this place. -- Medicine Lodge Cresset, March 10, 1881. (SB)

Cunningham, J.M.
J. M. Cunningham died at the Soldiers Home at Leavenworth July 28th. He resided in Medicine Lodge from 1897 to 1899. He was Mrs. F. A. Withers father-in-law, whose husband was in the photograph business here until about a year ago. Mr. Cunningham was 66 years of age. -- Barber County Index, August 12, 1903. (SB)

Davis, Erret
DIED -- Erret, infant son of Dr. and Mrs. T. W. Davis, died of diphtheria, February 21, 1881, aged 18 months and 16 days. -- Medicine Lodge Cresset, February 24, 1881. (SB)

Decker, Pearl
PEARL DECKER -- Little Pearl Decker, the 5 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Decker, of Lake City, died on Tuesday, June 28th, from the effects of malarial fever. Words of ours would be poor consolation to the parents of sweet little Pearl. She was the joy of mother's love, the light of a father's heart. Evans
A 13 year old son of T. C. Evans who lives on R. M. Watsons place between here and Protection, met with a sudden and sad death last Sunday evening. While leading a mule to water, he tied the halter around his waist. Farleigh, Ina
MRS. INA FARLEIGH DEAD -- Mrs. Ina Farleigh, who with her son, John Farleigh, resided in Medicine Lodge for some time, several years ago, died quite suddenly after a brief illness at her home in Wichita. Funeral services were held at the Gill Mortuary and burial was in the Old Mission Cemetery, Wichita. -- Barber County Index, January 7, 1937. (SB)

Gates, Martin K. Luther
OBITUARY OF M. L. GATES -- Martin K. Luther Gates was born near Ottumwa, Iowa, December 24, 1861 and passed away at eleven o'clock Sunday, December 18, at Larned, Kansas at the age of 76 years, 11 months, and 24 days. The cause of his death was hardening of the arteries resulting in paralytic strokes. He lived most of his life in Kansas. In the year 1891 he was united in marriage to Anna Harper. To this union were born two children. He has been engaged in farming in Harper and Barber counties. His recent home was near Hazelton, Kansas. Mr. Gates leaves to mourn his death his wife, two children, Mrs. C. F. Nichols of Protection and Jesse M. Gates of Coldwater, thirteen grandchildren, four great grandchildren and one half sister, Mrs. Loma Trout of Girard, Kansas. One brother and one sister preceded him in death. He was a kind and loving father, a good neighbor, and a firm believer in God. -- The Western Star, December 30, 1936.

Gillett, L.B.
Dr. L. B. Gillett died, at Beatrice, Nebraska, Nov. 3rd. He was a practicing physician in Medicine Lodge several years, leaving here in the latter '80's. He was in ill health for several years. Mrs. Gillett and Mrs. J. C. Davis, of this city, are sisters. -- Barber County Index, November 20, 1901. (SB)

Gilmore
Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Gilmore had the sad misfortune to lose their little baby girl that had been sick about a week. She died Saturday morning. It seemed that from the time she first took sick nothing that medical skill could do had any effect toward giving relief. It is a sad loss and the precious little girl will be greatly missed by the sorrowing parents. -- Barber County Index, January 9, 1918. (SB)

Greever, James D.
J. D. Greever Dead -- Judge T. C. Greever received a message from his son Charles at Viola, Kansas, informing him of the death of is brother, James D. Greever at Leadville, Colorado, on Sunday, December 13th. The Judge left for Viola Monday evening and calculated on going on to Colorado in case his son could not arrange to make the trip and to look after the affairs of the deceased. Mr. James D. Greever, a brother of Judge Greever of this city, was not married. He owned considerable mining and other properties and had made Leadville his headquarters for several years. He was 68 years of age. Hale, Arthur E.
DR. ARTHUR E. HALE DEAD -- Dr. Arthur E. Hale, prominent physician and surgeon of Alva, Oklahoma, died in an Alva hospital last Wednesday night, following a sudden illness and an emergency operation. Dr. Hale was well-known in this community, and had many friends and patients here who are grieved at his death. He was an eye, ear, nose and throat specialist, and was regarded as one of the most brilliant men in this field in the entire Southwest. He was 52 years of age. Hall, Martin S.
MARTIN S. HALL -- Martin S. Hall, 63, retired attorney, died at Harper Friday, March 9. Survivors include his widow, Winifred Joan; two son, William Martin and Scott Clarence, both at home; two daughters, Mrs. Mildred Cissell, Las Vegas, Nev., and Mrs. Janice Pykiet, of St. Louis; his father, E. R., and a brother, Max, both of Anthony. Funeral services were held Sunday, March 11, at 2:30 p.m. at the Elliott-Brownell-Wiley funeral home. -- Barber County Index, March 15, 1973. (SB)

Haney, Emma Jane
DIED - August 23rd, 1879, Emma Jane, infant daughter of David G. and Emma J, Haney, aged 9 months and 12 days. God hath called our darling to live with the angels. Pale and wan she grew and weakly, Bearing all her pain so meekly, and to our hearts growing dearer, As the trying hour drew nearer. Funeral services at the house of the parents Sunday, Aug. 24, by Wm. M. Friedley, from the text: "For these light afflictions work for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory." Hawkins, Robert A.
Albert Hawkins Rites Wednesday -- Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Attica Methodist Church, for Albert Joseph Hawkins, 64, Nashville farmer and rancher, who died Saturday in Nashville. Born May 22, 1900 in Bosbury, England, he lived in the Nashville community for 49 years. Survivors include his wife, Sarah Jane; two sons, Albert, Medicine Lodge, and Bill Spivey; one daughter, Joyce Hawkins, Hutchinson; and one brother and three sisters in England. Rev. Robert Ely will officiate and burial will be in Forest Park cemetery, Anthony. Arrangements are by Forsyth Funeral home, Medicine Lodge. -- Barber County Index, February 18, 1965. (SB)

Helton, Lila Maxine
Services Monday For Mrs. Helton -- Funeral services were held Monday, at the Forsyth Funeral Home for Lila Maxine Helton, 39, who died Friday morning at the Nashville Hospital. Born January 22, 1925, in Galva, she married Ora Helton on June 18, 1900. She is survived by her husband. Hill, Claudia A.
Mrs. Joseph (Claudia A.) Hill, 92, of Wichita, died Friday, March 9. Graveside services were held at 1:00 p.m. in the Ashland cemetery Saturday, March 10. She was survived by two sons, Joe J. Medicine Lodge, and Hugh G., Wichita, and two daughters, Mrs. Grace Newton, Wichita, and Mrs. Jo Eleanor Stewart, Tulsa. Hinton, Charley
Charley Hinton Dead. -- Charley Hinton, formerly of this county died at Alva, Okla., last Wednesday, January 21st., of pneumonia. He had been sick two weeks. Funeral services were held Friday and the remains were interred at Capron. Mrs. W. L. Parsons of this city is his sister. She was called to his bedside a day before his death. Mr. Hinton was 42 years of age and is survived by a wife and daughter, the latter being 16 years of age. The friends of the relatives in this county join with friends in Oklahoma in sympathy. -- Barber County Index, January 28, 1903. (SB)

Hitt, Kate M.
Mrs. O. J. Hitt Dead -- Mrs. Kate M. Hitt died at her home in Wichita, November 15th, after a long illness. A husband, O. J. Hitt, and four children, Hazel, William, Veta and Oliver, survive her. Mrs. Hitt was 37 years of age. Mr. and Mrs. Hitt and family were residents of this city for several years, having moved to Wichita last spring, when it became necessary for Mrs. Hitt to be at the hospital for some time owing to her declining health. The nature of her illness was not learned. Her case yielded to treatment for a while and she seemed to be getting better. It was only a short time before her death that her condition became critical and despite the best of care and medical skill she passed away. The husband and children have the sincere sympathy of their friends in their bereavement. -- Medicine Lodge Cresset, November 21, 1917. (SB)

Horn, Jacob
Jacob Horn died at his home in Wichita, March 17, at the age of 83 years. He was a veteran of the Civil War and at one time was a member of the G.A.R. Post in this city. He was an old Barber County settler, but has lived in Wichita for the past eight years. Uncle Jake had many warm friends in Barber County who regret to hear of his death. He lived a useful life and was deservingly respected by all who knew him. -- Barber County Index, March 27, 1900. (EB)

Keifner, John
John Keifner Dead. -- John Keifner of Garden Plain, Kansas, who owns the Keifner ranch west of this city (the former Benedict ranch) died of typhoid fever at his home last Thursday. He was well known here, having been here much of his time the past several years. He is survived by a wife and four sons. -- Barber County Index, January 6, 1909. (SB)

Keller, Etta Erlene
OBITUARY -- Etta Erlene Keller, was born September 6, 1935 at Sun City, Kansas and departed this life December 22, 1935 at Medicine Lodge, Kansas, being only 3 months and 16 days old. She leaves to mourn her loss, her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Keller, 6 sisters, 3 brothers, Elma, Erma, Ernest, Emma, Evert, Ester, Eva, Ervin and Edith, all of the home, her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Ward and Mrs. John Keller and a host of other relatives and friends. -- Barber County Index, December 26, 1935. Krug, Mrs. William
Krug Service Held At Hudson -- Funeral service for Mrs. Wm. Krug, mother of Coach Bill Krug, was held Feb. 12 at Trinity United Church of Christ at Hudson. Mrs. Krug was killed in an automobile accident Feb. 9 while she an her husband were en route to Great Bend. Other survivors are the husband; two daughters, Mrs. Leonard Brim of Hudson and Mrs. Prentis Pontius of Hutchinson. -- Barber County Index, February 18, 1965. (SB)

Lincoln, Mary Died - On November 15th 1886, one and half miles south west of Aetna. Little Mary Lincoln, aged 10 years and five days. Daughter of John and Annie Lincoln. Little, Julius
Julius Little, the infant son of Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Little, died yesterday and was buried in the City cemetery this morning. Little Julius was a handsome promising child. His sudden death is to the parents like the bursting of an unexpected storm, and throws over the home a deep and lasting gloom. -- Medicine Lodge Cresset, May 4, 1882. (SB)

Long
A sad accident last Wednesday morning about 15 miles west of this city, which resulted in the death of the little 3 year old daughter of M. T. Long, who with his family were on the road to western Kansas, traveling overland with a 3 yoke ox team drawing 2 wagons. In some way the child fell off from the seat and the wheels of one of the wagons passed over her head, crushing the skull. The child lived for about 6 hours being unconscious until death ensued. She is buried on the farm of Mr. W. R. Maloy. -- Kiowa Hearld, September 30, 1886. (SB)

McCay, A.T.
A. T. McCAY DEAD -- A. T. McCay of Kansas City, well-known in this community, died in Kansas City on Wednesday, May 12, 1937. He is survived by his wife, formerly Miss Dell Simpson. Mr. McCay was at one time court stenographer in the district court of Barber county. He was a brother-in-law of Warren Simpson who resides west of town. -- Barber County Index, May 20, 1937. (SB)

McGrath, Louis
LOUIS McGRATH -- On Tuesday night June 28th, Louis aged 1 year, 7 months and 5 days, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan McGrath, died of cholera infantum. The funeral service was conducted at the family residence Wednesday afternoon by Elder Nicholson, after which the remains were buried in Highland Cemetery. Little Louis was a remarkably bright child, and was sunshine in the McGrath home. His death leaves a void in that household for which there is no consolation except the hope of the life hereafter given to christian people. Time may bring forgetfulness to mourning friends, but to the grieving parents there is no balm. -- Medicine Lodge Cresset, July 1, 1892. (SB)

McKinney, Alex
Alex McKinney Shot. -- Alex McKinney, who lived here in the 1880's but in late years was on the police force in Kansas City, was shot on Wednesday while attempting to apprehend an insane man, and died on Friday. McKinney did not know that the man was armed and as he went to take hold of him the demented man shot him in the head. McKinney did not lose consciousness until about half hour before he died. -- Barber County Index, January 28, 1903. (SB)

Morris
The infant child of Mrs. Ella Morris died Sunday, January 5th. The child was ten months old. The funeral services were held from the family residence on Second avenue west Tuesday, January 7th. Munson, Mrs. L.A.
Mrs. L. A. Munson Dead. -- Mrs. L. A. Munson died at her home at Hopeton, Oklahoma on Wednesday, August 5, 1903. The remains were brought here for burial on Friday, accompanied by the husband and daughters and husbands, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Whitney and Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Gr_ce, and a nephew, William Munson of West Unity, Ohio. Mrs. Munson was afflicted with internal cancer for more than a year. Short funeral services were held at the grave, conducted by Rev. L. M. Belden, pastor of the Presbyterian church. Murdock
Died - Thursday evening, the infant child of Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Murdock. The funeral will take place next Saturday at 2 o'clock P.M. The services will be conducted by Rev. A. H. Mulkey. -- The Medicine Lodge Cresset, September 19, 1879. (SB)

Peck, Francis E.
DIED -- At her home in the Christian Colony in June 23rd, 1882, of consumption, Mrs. Francis E., wife of W. A. Peck aged 45 years, 4 months and 3 days. An exemplary, consistent christian, a faithful wife and mother and steadfast friend has gone to rest. Though slender of body and often prostrated by disease, yet her mind was unclosed and bright to the last. Phillips
One of the twin boys of Washington Phillips died last Tuesday, aged six months. The remains were placed at rest in the cemetery south of town. -- Sharon News, July 22, 1884. (KF)

Phillips, Ralph
Father of Mrs. Archie McDowell Dies -- Mrs. Archie McDowell received word last Tuesday, February 26, 1963, that her father, Ralph Phillips of Medicine Lodge, had been seriously injured when he fell from a ladder while working on a church at Sharon. Mr. Phillips was taken to the Medicine Lodge Hospital where he died on the morning of February 28, from internal injuries received in the fall. Rankin
Baby Girl Dead. -- The little three months old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Rankin died on Sunday, April 10th. Interment was made in Highland cemetery, this city, on Monday afternoon. The grieving relatives have the sympathy of everyone. (- Cresset.) -- Sharon Advocate, April 20, 1904. (SB)

Rauhut, Adam
Adam Rauhut Dead. -- Adam Rauhut died at his home in McAdoo township, Monday, of heart disease. Mr. Rauhut formerly owned and operated the Elm Mills and had an extensive acquaintance throughout the county. His absence will be felt. -- Barber County Index, January 28, 1903. (SB)

Shelley, Kittie
DIED -- Saturday morning, March 31st, Kittie Shelley, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Shelley, aged five months. Until a few days previous to its death the babe seemed to be in its normal health. Smith, Eliza
Died. Eliza Smith of Elm Mills township, wife of John Smith, died last Wednesday evening, September 25th, of typhoid fever. She was seventy years of age. Mrs. Smith was one of Barber county's most highly respected old ladies and in her death the people of Elm Mills township lose a dear friend. -- Barber County Index, October 3, 1901. (SB)

Stewart, David
Reports from California say that David Stewart, formerly of Elm Mills, this county, and who went to Ensenada, last summer hoping to better his health, died there in the latter part of February. It will be remembered here that he is the man that shot and fatally wounded young Castine, whom he is alleged to have caught robbing the post office at Elm Mills, and of which Stewart was in charge at the time. -- Barber County Democrat, April 6, 1888. Stranathan, J. Herbert
STRANATHAN -- J. Herbert Stranathan, aged 23 years, died at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Stranathan, in Moore township, on Thursday, June 23rd. He met with an accident some time ago, and was then taken with lung fever. Herbert Stranathan was a brilliant young man and was a reporter of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He enjoyed the confidence of the paper, and life held a bright future for him. His death will be deeply deplored. The remains were taken to Streeter, Illinois, for burial. -- Medicine Lodge Cresset, July 1, 1892. (SB)

Timmis, Maxine
Mrs. Lyle Timmis Buried Tuesday -- Funeral service was held Tuesday at Forsyth Funeral Home for Mrs. Lyle (Maxine) Timmis, 38, who died Friday, Dec. 11 in a Wichita hospital following a short illness. Rev. Richard Feallock officiated and burial was made in Highland cemetery. Mrs. Timmis was born Jan. 7, 1926 at Scammon, Kansas. She is survived by her husband; a son, Bill of Kansas City; two daughters, Janet Lynn and Pamela Jean, of the home; her parents and a brother, Bill Athinson. -- Barber County Index, December 17, 1964. Vaughn infant
Died: The infant child, ten months old, of Mr. and Mrs. John Vaughn died on Sunday and was buried in Highland cemetery Monday. Rev. J.F. Irwin conducted the funeral services. -- Barber County Index, February 27, 1901. (EB)

Waldrich, E.L.
Died: E.L. Waldrich died very suddenly last Thursday at the residence of his son, J.C. Waldrich, near Zula, of an apoplectic stroke. He was there visiting his son and meant to return to Iowa in February to visit his other son. The remains were brought to Alva, Saturday, and sent to Grace Hill, Iowa, for interment. Warren Infant
The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Jay Warren died Friday, January 25th, and the little body laid to rest in Highland cemetery on Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Warren have the sympathy of their friends in their bereavement. -- Barber County Index, January 30, 1918. (SB)

Weaver
The funeral of the three Weaver boys, who were shot and hanged by a mob at Anthony last spring, was preached in that city last Sunday, at the request of the wives of two of the boys. The services were conducted by Rev. Edwards, so we have ben informed. -- Kiowa Hearld, October 14, 1886. (SB)

Woodruff, Jesse
Jesse Woodruff Dead. -- Jesse Woodruff died at his parents home in Kingman yesterday morning at 2 o'clock. He was taken home sick last Wednesday and his condition grew worse continuously. He died of typhoid pneumonia fever. Jesse was a model young man. He lived in our city about a year, having been connected with the Santa Fe depot and telegraph office. He was a member of the A. O. U. W., the M. E. church and Epworth League of this city. His Epworth League friends sent a beautiful floral wreath for his casket, to Kingman yesterday. The people of Medicine Lodge extend their most sincere sympathy to the bereaved parents. --Barber County Index, December 11, 1901. (SB)
