Barber County Kansas |
Archibald Rankin, son of Henry and Mary Rankin, was born on March 7th in Fountain county, Indiana. He departed this life May 6, 1944 in Sharon, Kansas, following a heart attack the previous Monday.Arch came to Kansas with his parents in 1884 and settled on the farm in Ridge township where he made his home with the exception of 17 years, when he and his family resided in Zenda.
During his residence in Zenda he was made a member of the school board, a member of the city council and mayor for a time. He was also county commissioner of Kingman county and was always quite active in community affairs wherever he resided.
Perhaps no other man of the community had the respect and love of children and adult alike. He will live on in our memory as one who was destined from the beginning to bring joy and happiness to the lives he touched, and there were so many. He was anxious to help those with whom he came in contact and had an unusual ability in finding a way to do so. He never flinched from any task that came before him and he stood firmly for his convictions. He had a keen sense of humor and enjoyed life to the fullest.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Gertrude M., a daughter, Aloah McDonald of LaMesa, Calif., a son, Donald H. of Nashville, 3 grandchildren, one brother, John Rankin of Ashland, a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends. One son, Hugh Lennes, preceded him in death April 15, 1913.
