Betty Jane (Harbaugh) Garten, 79, died Friday, September 8, 2006 at Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital, Medicine Lodge.She was born December 19, 1926 at Gerlane, Kansas, the daughter of Uly and Mabel (Hensley) Harbaugh. A lifetime resident of Barber County, she attended Northwestern State College, Alva. She taught school at Gerlane and Mound Center in rural Barber County, cooked at the Gus Hensley Cafe, worked at Clarke Oil, and the City Office and was a homemaker. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and VFW Auxiliary, all in Medicine Lodge. She also helped organize the day care at the United Methodist Church.
On August 18, 1946, she married Bill F. Garten at Kiowa. He died December 12, 2002. She is survived by a son Jerry, Medicine Lodge; a daughter, Nancy Carr and her husband Steve, Olathe; 2 brothers, Jake Harbaugh and his wife Barbara, Sharon; Albert Harbaugh and his wife Helen, Kiowa; a sister Mollie Watts, Hardtner, Kansas; 2 grandchildren, Shane Carr, Medicine Lodge and Stephanie Babcock, and her husband Nick, Olathe; 3 great grandchildren, Morgan Whitfield, and Lanie and Shiloh Carr.
She was preceded in death by a brother Jim, and two half sisters Ruth Chapin and Faye Gilmore. Funeral service was Monday, September 11 at the United Methodist Church, Medicine Lodge with Pastor Frank DeFisher presiding. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.
