The Barber County Index, October 24, 1906.

In Memory of Daniel Pierce.

The following tribute to the late Daniel Pierce of Lake City is from the pen of his friend, I. O. Sherrod:

At one o'clock Friday night, October 12, 1906, the death angel came and took away our friend and brother, D. L. Pierce, and although this has been expected for some time, yet it brings a feeling to the community that cannot very well be expressed for in him we lose a good neighbor and a worthy citizen.

"Uncle Dan" as he was familiarly known, had been past doing manual labor for several months but not until recently was he confined to his home. His last few days were simply times of physical terror and he seemed glad to know that his time was very short.

Soon after coming to Kansas Mr. Pierce became one of the leading stock dealers of this part of the county, but for all his temporal success, he never forgot the spiritual. He was a zealous church worker and a conscientious Christian. Mrs. Pierce who is almost exhausted from worry and the loss of her husband has the heartfelt sympathy of all who know her and well may she console herself in the fact that she shall meet. "Uncle Dan" in a brighter clime. Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at the home by Rev. Gilmore after which the remains were taken to Lake City cemetery where the Masons took the burial ceremony in hand.

D. L. Pierce was born in Montgomery county, Ind., July 31, 1832. Soon after his birth the family moved to Hendricks county of the same state where (in Dec. 28, 1854) he was united in marriage to Sarah E. McLain. To this union two children were born neither of which survive. From Indiana Mr. Pierce and family moved to Putman county, Mo., their last move being to Barber county, Kansas in 1876.

"When peace like a river attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll,
What e'er be my lot he has taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul."

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

A precious one from us has gone,
A voice we loved is stilled;
A place is vacant in our home,
Which never can be filled.
God in His wisdom has recalled,
The boon his love had given,
And though the body slumbers here,
The soul is safe in Heaven.
