The Reverend Dennis L. Reed, 64, died August 16, 2006, at Catholic Care Center, Wichita.He was born November 11, 1941, in Hardtner, the son of George Franklin Reed and Laura Margaret (Bell) Reed. He studied at Conception Seminary and was ordained as a priest for the Diocese of Dodge City by the Most Reverend Marion F. Forst on June 7, 1969. He was assistant pastor at St. Rose, Great Bend; Sacred Heart Cathedral, Dodge City; St. Bernadette, Kansas City, MO; and Coronation of Our Lady, Grandview, MO.
He was a pastor of the following parishes: St. John the Apostle, St. John with St. Francis Xavier, Seward; Sacred Heart, Ness City; St. Nicholas, Kinsley with Saints Peter and Paul, North Kinsley, St. Mary’s, Hodgeman County, and St. George Bucklin; St. Dominic, Garden City with St. Stanislaus, Ingalls; Sacred Heart of Jesus, Larned; with St. Bernard, Belpre; and St. John the Baptist, Spearville; with St. Lawrence, Jetmore and St. Anthony, Hanston.
He also served the diocese on the Liturgy Commission, Diocesan Personnel Board, Diocesan School Board, Presbyteral Council, as a consultor and the Priests Retirement Fund Board. While on sabbatical studies in Rome, he was received in audience by Pope John Paul II. While his greatest joys were the priestly ministry, family and friends, he was a reader of history, lover of the arts and traveled extensively. He was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include: a brother, Gary L. Reed, Medicine Lodge; a niece, Tracy Schmidt and her husband, Jeff, Ponder, Texas; two grand-nephews; a grand-niece; and many other family members, including a special aunt, Mary Hommertzheim, Medicine Lodge.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a nephew, Clint Alan Reed; a niece, and a grand-nephew.
Funeral Mass was on Monday, August 21 at the church with Bishop Ronald Gilmore presiding. Cremation followed with burial of ashes in St. Columbia Cemetery, Conception, MO.
