Elizabeth Blunt, 73, Horton, died Jan 5, 1989, at a Horton
nursing home. She was born Nov. 3, 1915, at Horton, the daughter of David
and Christena Lehn O'Dell. Mrs Blunt was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church
in Horton. She married Raymond Blunt. He died Feb. 5, 1976. A son,
Lawrence Blunt, died Sept. 3, 1985.
Survivors include a daughter, Donna Harvey of Sabetha; three sons,
David Blunt of Hiawatha, Phillip Blunt of Murray, Iowa, and Charles O'Dell
of Horton; two sisters, Virgile Vaughn of Salinas, Calif., and Fern Allen
of Lawrence; two brothers, Paul O'Dell of Salinas and Joe O'Dell of Savannah,
Ill.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Relatives and friends
will meet from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Maple-Chaney-Blay Mortuary in Horton,
where a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be
at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church in Horton. Burial will be at Horton Cemetery.
Robert M. Chapman-Funeral service for Robert M. Chapman,
64, Hamlin, who died Jan. 11, 1989, was Saturday at Casselman-Meek Funeral
Home, Hiawatha. God Understands and Old Rugged Cross were provided by organist
Shirley Myers and soloist Glenn Weaver. Pallbearers were Bob Reschke, Terry
Reschke, Emmett Iverson, David Shannon, Forrest Shannon and Jonathan Shannon.
Burial was at Meriden Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Paula, of the
home; and a half-brother, George Hesse of Ozawkie.
DeDunnah- Calvin D. DeDunnah, 59, Gladstone, Mo.,
was found died at his home Friday, September 27, 1985. When he did not report
for work his employer called Clay County Missouri officials who found he
had died at his home, apparently of natural causes. He was born March 12,
1926 at Robinson, the son of Don T. and Hazel M. Skinner DeDunnah. He was
raised in that community and graduated from Robinson High School. He was
a veteran of World War II. He had worked as a surveyor for the DeMent Surveying
Company of Gladstone for the past several years. His wife, the former Barbara
Morris died in Febuary of 1984. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Teresa
Voyles of Lemoore, Calif.; three stepdaughters, Nancy Morris of Kansas City,
Ks., Kelly Jo Self of San Angelo, Texas, and Brenda Perkins of Kansas City,
Mo.; a brother, Elden C. DeDunnah of Kansas City, Ks.; and three
step-grandchildren. Funeral services re planned for 7 p.m. Monday, September
30, at the Casselman-Meek Funeral Home, Hiawatha, with Pastor B. Jerry Sykes
officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 1,
at the G.A.R. Cemetery, near Miami, Okla., with the REv. Clayton R. White
officiating.

J.A. (Gus) Hall
of Rulo, Nebr., passed away at the Missouri
Methodist Hospital in St. Joseph, Tuesday morning. Saturday afternoon Mr.
Hall's car left the pavement at Wathena and overturned. The pavement was
wet and it is thought the car skidded as he was going around a curve and
overturned. He suffered a fractured skull and a crushed chest in the accident.
Taken to the hospital at St. Joseph he never recovered from the accident.
J.A. Hall was bornat Rulo, Nebr., and had lived in White Cloud and Omaha.
He was a member of Masonic Orient Lodge No. 13 at Rulo. Survivors ar his
wife, Mrs Margaret Bowker Hall; six daughters, Miss Mary Hall, Kansas City,
Mo., Mrs Gussie Son, Dayton, Ohio, Mrs Ruby Koons, McLean, Texas, Mrs Alice
McAlister, and Mrs Myrtle Asbury, both of White Cloud, Kan., and Mrs Naomo
Hall Mosier, Robinson; three sons, Earl Hall, Long Beach, Calif., Leroy Hall,
White River, Ariz., and George Hall, Colorado Springs, Colo.; one sister
Mrs Eleanor Jondrow, Rulo, Nebr.; three brothers, Samuel Hall, Seward, Nebr.;
Charles Hall, Harbor City, Calif.; and J.M. Hall, Falls City, Nebr.; and
sixteen grandchildren. As we go to press no funeral arrangements have been
made.
Hedrick-Double funeral services for Arley Hedrick,
83, and his wife Arvilla, 80, 404 Minnehaha, Hiawatha, were held at the United
Methodist Church of Robinson, at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 2, 1985, with
the Rev. Walter R. Brant officiating. Mrs. Milton Lieneman, organist, accompanied
Ward Henry, vocal soloist, who sang "Beyond the Sunset." Serving as pallbearers
were grandchildren: Guy Hedrick, Terry Hedrick, Wesley Hedrick, Arley Hedrick,
Rob Hedrick, Tim Hedrick, Kevin Hedrick, C.O. Menghini, Henry Menghini, Arvilla
Zeffaro, Elizabeth Rudder, Hope Menghini, Pam Howard, Kristy Hedrick and
Polly Tomec. Interment was at the Mount Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha. Casselman-Meek
Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Frank D. Hedrick, 63, of Kansas City, Kansas, died
unexpectedly Friday morning, April 18, 1986, at Providence St. Margaret Health
Center in Kansas City, following open heart surgery. He had a history of
heart trouble. He was born at Robinson, October 30, 1922, the son of
Arley Otto and Arvilla Hope Weibling Hedrick and was raised in the Robinson
area. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II. He moved to Kansas City
in 1950 where he worked for a number of years for the Swift and Company.
Later, he worked for Lundy Sandblasting. He has worked as a courier for the
Purolater Courier Corporation for 16 years, retiring at the age of 62. Mr
Hedrick was a former member of the Hedrick-Moll Post No.148, Robinson
American Legion. He was married to Wanda Wenger, December 29, 1944, at
Westmoreland, Kan. She survives at the home. Also surviving are three sons,
Wesley Frank Hedrick and Terry Wayne Hedrick, both of Robinson, Arley Paul
Hedrick of Hiawatha; four daughters, Pamela June Howard of Hiawatha, Polly
Joan Tomec of Pasadena, Texas, Poma Jill Brown of Kansas City, Ks.,
and Peggy Joyce Widman of Robinson; three brothers, Jack Hedrick of Hiawatha,
Royce Hedrick of Grand Prairie, Texas and James Hedrick also of Hiawatha;
two sisters, Betty Stoltenberg of Artesia, Calif., and Joyce Menghini of
Pittsburg, Ks.; 16 grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. Funeral services
are planned for 2 p.m. Monday, April 21, from the United Methodist Church
of Robinson. Interment will be at the Rose Hill Cemetery, Robinson. Friends
may call at the Casselman-Meek Funeral Home of Hiawatha, after 4 p.m. Saturday,
and where the family will greet friends from 7 till 8 Sunday evening. Memorail
contibutions are suggested to the Brown County Chapter of the American Heart
Assn. and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
Marvin F. Houchens, 84, rural Hiawatha, died Feb.
6, 1989, at Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center in Topeka. He was born
Jan. 14, 1905, at Sedalia, Mo., the son of John and Martha Goodman Houchens,
and came to Kansas at an early age. Mr. Houchens was a member of the First
Christian Church, BPOE Elks Lodge and Masonic Lodge No. 35 AF&AM, all
of Hiawatha. He was a farmer, and later was a service station owner-operator
in the Hiawatha area for many years. He married Grace Gilbert, June 2, 1968,
at Hiawatha. She survives of the home. Other survivors include a son, Kenneth
Houchens of Lincoln Neb.; a daughter, Linda Schilling of Morrill; a stepdaughter,
Janet Griffith of Topeka; a brother Elmer Houchens of Florence, Mo.; two
sisters, Hannah Hall of LaMonter. Mo., and Lessie Sluder of Blue Springs,
Mo.; nine grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and six
step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded
in death by a daughter, Norma Ann Glotzbach; two sisters Mary Houchens and
Zelma Bremer; and two brothers, Arthur Houchens and Oscar Houchens. The Family
will recieve friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Casselman-Meek Funeral
Home in Hiawatha. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral
home, with the Rev. Steve Regas officiating. Burial will be at Mount Hope
Cemetery. Masonic committal service will be conducted by the Hiawatha Masonic
Lodge.
Robinson, Kan.-G. Val Koons, 83, died Sunday evening
at a Hiawatha, Kan., hospital where he had been admitted that day. Born in
Lone Jack, Mo., Mr Koons was an electrian working for several companies around
the country. He moved to Robinson from Amarillo, Texas in 1953. He had been
a resident of a Highland, Kan., nursing home for the past 14 months. A veteran
of World War I, he was a member of Hedrick's Moll American Legion Post of
Robinson. He was a member of the Warrensburg, Mo., Masonic Lodge for over
50 years. Survivors include his wife, Mrs Ruby Koons of the home and two
sisters, Miss Fern Koons and Mrs Clete Scheindler, Lee Summit, Mo. Services
will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Meek chapel. The Rev. Harold Wolf will
officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.
NOTE-per copy of death certificate George Val Koons was
born on May 24, 1891 died March 23, 1975 and was buried on March 26,
1975.
The White Cloud Globe-Tribune for July 21, 1938
Mrs. Robert McAtee, 64 died last Wednesday afternoon
at 4 o'clock at the home of her sister Miss Anna Osgood. She fell and broke
her hip two years ago, and has been an invalid since. Two sons, Malcomb and
Donald, a daughter Susan, 2 sisters, Miss Anna Osgood of White Cloud, Mrs.
Stella Leibengood of Lawrence; and one brother, G.H. Osgood of White Cloud.
Etta Osgood, daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Osgood was bornin Dunham,
Providence of Quebec, Canada on April 20, 1874. In 1879 her parents came
to White Cloud where she lived until her graduation from the White Cloud
High School in 1893. She taught the Mount Hope School in Brown County for
many years. In 1903 she was united in marriage to Robert McAtee. To this
union five children were born, two of them proceeding her in death. Robert
McAtee departed this life in 1932. Funeral services were held at 3 o'clock
Friday afternoon at the home of her sister, Miss Anna Osgood. Rev. Floyd
Price of Hiawatha conducted the services. Burial was in the Hiawatha cemetery.
Laura Mize
was born in Jackson County, December 12, 1869
and died at her home 1 mile west of Fairview, Kansas, March 27, 1921 at the
age of 51 years, 3 months, and 15 days. She rose in the morning feeling
perfectly well. In 1882 the family moved to Brown County and on the 20th
day of Jaznuary 1887, she was married to I.B.(Isaac Bentley) Owen at Morrill,
Kansas. Her children are Effie Violet Casteel, Joe Ernest Owen, and Glen
Delila, who passed away in 1912. Violet is from Wichita, Joe in Sabetha,
Mother D.A. Schwint, Oklahoma City, OK, sisters Belle Shubert, Fairview Edna
Deringdinger, Junction City, Mrs.Clyde Crocker, Corpus Christi, TX, brothers
Jim Mize, Council Bluffs, Iowa, Joe Mize, Oneida, and Ollie (think this is
Oliver) Mize, Wetmore.
James H. Mosier, 48, midtown Kansas City, died Oct.
25, 1989, at Veterans Hospital. He was born in Robinson, Kan., and lived
in Lyons, Kan., before moving to Kansas City seven years ago. Mr. Mosier
was a clerk for the Internal Revenue Service for five years. Earlier he taught
at Lyons High School for three years. He received a bachelor's degree from
Emporia (Kan) State University. He was an army veteran. Survivors include
his mother, Naomi Mosier, Robinson; a brother, Gary Mosier, Hannibal, Mo.;
and four sisters, Patricia Owens, Hiawatha, Kan., Barbara Lenox, Topeka,
Myrietta Snodgrass, Big Lake, Mo., and Marilyn Viosky, Avon, Conn. Memorial
services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Elmwood Cemetery chapel; cremation.
Hiawatha Dailey Issue for Feb., 26, 1940
Joseph F. Mosier,
81, died Sunday morning at 5:30
at his home, 1010 Pottawatomie St., after several years illness. He
is survived by his wife, 2 sons, Clarence, Joseph, of Robinson,
12 grandchildren, a brother, Thomas, of Severance, a sister, Miss
Katie Mosier, of Severance. Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning
at 9 a.m. at St. Anns Catholic church in Hiawatha. The Rev. Father Norbet.,
O.S.B., in charge. Burial will be in the Mt. Hope cemetery. A rosary
will be said at the Hargis Funeral home at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
Joseph F. "Jody" Mosier, Robinson, age 78, died Sunday
afternoon, July 15, 1984, aat the Regency Health Care Center, Hiawatha, where
he had been a resident since October of 1981. He ws born September 3,
1905, at Highland, the son of Joseph F. and Margaret Kirwan Mosier and had
lived in northeast Kansas all of his life. He worked for the Union Pacific
Railroad as a maintainance crewman and a foreman, retiring in 1970. He was
a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church of Hiawatha. He was married to Naomi
Hall in Troy on August 7, 1928. She survives at the home. He is also survived
by four daughters, Mrs Patricia Owens, Hiawatha, Mrs Barbara Lenox, Topeka,
Mrs Myrietta Snodgrass, Big Lake, Mo., and Marilyn Viosky, Avon, Conn.; two
sons, Gary Mosier of Junction City, Kansas, and James Mosier of St. Joseph,
Mo.; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A brother Clarence Mosier,
died in 1972. Funeral services will be held from the Casselman-Meek Funeral
Home at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning, July 18, with the Rev. Roderic Giller,
OSB, officiating. Interment will be at the Olive Branch Cemetery, White Cloud.
Parish Wake services will be held at the funeral home at 8 o'clock Tuesday
evening.
Hiawatha Daily World, July 11, 1958:
Mrs. Margaret T. Mosier, 89, died at the Sunshine Haven
Nursing home on July 10, 1958, where she made her home for several
years. Mrs. Mosier formerly live at 1010 Pottawatomie street. She
is survived by two sons, Joseph F. Mosier of Robinson, Clarence E.
Mosier of Beatrice, Nebr.; 14 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren;
sisters, Miss Cecilia Kirwan of Brownsville, Tex., Mrs. Agnes Bowlby
of Guthrie, Okla.; a brother, Patrick Kirwan of McAllen, Tex. Funeral services
will be held from St Ann's Catholic church at 9 o'clock Saturday morning,
July 12, by Father Norbert Wavada, OSB, with interment at the Mt. Hope cemetery.
The rosary will be recited by the Altar and Rosary societies this Friday
evening at Meek's chapel at 7:30 o'clock. The parish rosary will be recited
at 8 o'clock.
Hiawatha Dailey World for Feb. 16, 1952
Thomas Mosier, born 1867 died at the age of 85, Febuary
9, 1952 at the home of his daughter Mrs Walter Janicke, Highland, Kansas.
Vella R. Nigus-Funeral service for Vella R. Nigus, 94,
Hiawatha, who died Jan. 12, 1989, was Jan. 14 at Casselman-Meek Funeral Home
in Hiawatha, with the Rev. Steve Regas officiating. Vocal soloist Ward Henry
and organist Mrs. Ralph Mitchell provided the selections "In the Garden"
and "How Great Thou Art." Pallbearers were Bill Nigus, Roger Guier, David
A. Nigus, Keith Nigus, Mike Nigus and Donnie NIgus. Burial was at Pleasant
Hill Cemetery, Leona.
Glen D. Owen
was born May 25, 1896, 4 miles south of Fairview
and died December 20, 1912, aged 16, 6 months and 75 days. Three weeks previous
to thursday she became ill at school and from that time on she grew worse.
On the following Saturday she was take to the Sabetha Hospital where
she and passed away. Glen united with the Methodist Church in August 1908
from then on she became an active member. She was a Junior of High School
and a person of high values, very loving, ready to do and possessing a sweet
disposition. She leaves to mourn, her mother and father (Laura and Isaac),
a sister Mrs. Violet Casteel of Eureka, KS, a brother Joseph at the place
and many other relatives and firends. This was from the Courier Democrat,

Mrs. Laura (Mize) wife of Isaac (Owen), living just west
of town (Fairview) died sunday, March 27, of apoplexy. She died about 8 that
evening. She was about 50, born in Jackson County. Her mother, D.A. SWINT
of Oklahoma City, OK, sister Edna DANGDINGER of Junction City (Riley County)
son Joseph (Owen) of Nemaha County and daughter Violet CASTEEL of Wichita.
Theodore Rhodd
White Cloud, Kan.-Theodore William "Bill" Rhodd, 62, White Cloud, died Tuesday,
Jan.10, 1989, at his home following a lengthy illness. He was born in Brown
County, Kan., where he lived most of his life. Mr Rhodd was a Navy-Air Force
veteran, serving from March 17, 1944 until May 21, 1946, and a member of
the Presbyterian faith. He married the former Wanda Sisk on June 3, 1946,
at Hiawatha, Kan. She survives of the home. He was proceeded in death by
a son, Ronald; two brothers, Joseph and Melvin; and by a sister, Lenore.
Surviving: three daughters, Wanda Craig, Marguerite Packett and Georgia,
all of Falls City, Neb.; a son, Jerry, Falls City; a sister, Mildred Hartman,
Hiawatha; a brother, Vernon, White Cloud; six grandchildren; and three
step-grandchildren. Services: 1:30 p.m. Friday, Clark Funeral Home, Falls
City. Burial, Steele Cemetery, Falls City, with a joint graveside military
honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1765, American Legion Post No.
102 and Disabled Veterans Post No. 43, all of Falls City, and the Iowa Tribal
Color Guard.
Kenneth D. Tollefson, 51, Hiawatha, died Jan. 14,
1989 at
Hiawatha Community Hospital. He was born Nov. 25, 1937, at Horton, the son
of Henry A. and Henrietta E. Sinclair Tollefson.
He was a 1955 graduate of Horton High School. Mr Tollefson was a member of
the First United Methodist Church in Hiawatha, Hiawatha Volunteer Rescue
Squad, and past member of the Hiawatha Auxiliary Police Dept. He was a Navy
veteran. He was employed at Harpster son Construction Lumber Co. from 1958
to 1961 then started Tollefson Construction Co., which he owned and operated
until his death.
Mr. Tollefson married Sonja K. Soyland Sept 13, 1959, at the Horton Baptist
Church. She survives of the home. Other survivors include a daughter, Laura
Tollefson of McGuire Air Force Base, New Jersey; a son, Dan Tollefson of
Liberal; his parents of Horton; a brother, Phillip Tollefson of Colorado
Springs, Colo; a sister, Roberta Schuetz of Olmstead Falls, Ohio; and a
granddaughter. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Casselman
Meek Funeral Home in Hiawatha. Visitation is until 12 noon Tuesday at the
funeral home. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church in
Hiawatha with the Revs. Bill F. Hemmen Jr., Gerald Veicht and Phillip
Dachenhausen officiating. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.
Memorials are suggested to the Kenneth Tollefson Memorial Fund, to be designated
at a later date, and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
Romine F. Tolles, 90, of Hiawatha, died Sunday
morning, Aug. 22, 1987, at the Heritage Manor in Hiawatha, where he
had been a resident since December 1986. He was born at Crab Orchard, Neb.,
June 16, 1897, the son of William Frederick and Alice Elizabeth Wilcox Tolles
and had been a resident of Hiawatha for over 50 years. He had worked for
a number of years for the Gas Service Company in Hiawatha before working
at a defense plant at Seatle, Wash. He later worked for the Sunflower Ordnance
Plant at DeSoto, Ks. for many years. He married Clarisa G. Henry, August
28, 1920, at Beatrice, Neb. She died March 1, 1966. Survivors include four
daughters, Alice E. Newell, Branson, Mo., Jean Kattes, Nebraska City, Neb.,
Donna Koci, Topeka, and Pat Stoltenberg of rural Hiawatha; two sons, William
F. Tolles, LaGrande, Ore., and Richard L. Tolles, Huffman, Texas; 13
grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was proceeded in death by a
daughter, Neva Tolles, in infancy; a son, Charles Tolles in 1980; two brothers,
Charles Tolles and Roland Keith Tolles; two sisters, Esther Barnhart and
Neva Gilkerson; a grandson and a great-grandson. Funeral services are planned
for 10:30 Tuesday morning, Aug. 25, at the Casselman-Meek Funeral Home with
David Seward officiating. Interment will be at the Mount Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.
The family will greet friends at the funer home from 7 until 8 Monday evening,
Aug. 24. Memorial contributrions are suggested to the Romine Tolles Memorial
Fund to be designated later by the family.
Ernest M. VanLiew, 87, Kansas City, Mo., died Jan.
14, 1989 at his home. He was born March 11, 1901, in Valley Falls, the son
of William and Edna Fulton VanLiew. Mr VanLiew was a member of the Emmerson
Park christian Church in Kansas City, Kan. He owned VanLiew Lawn Furniture
in Kansas City, Mo., from 1927 to 1939, and later farmed in the Robinson
area from 1939 to 1952. He then moved to Hiawatha, where he owned VanLiew
Real Estate Co., before retiring in 1964. Mr VanLiew married Mamie Hilligross
in 1922 in Atchison. She died in 1980. He married Dorothy Cleaver in 1986.
She survives of the home. Other survivors includes two sons, Raymond VanLiew
of Medford, Ore., and Frank VanLiew of Kansas City, Mo.; two daughters, Helen
Blair of Las Vegas, Nev., and Veronica Oots of Kansas City, Kan.; two brothers,
Carl VanLiew and Harry VanLiew, both of Atchison; nine grandchildren; and
five great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7
tonight at Newcomers White Chapel, 6600 N. Antioch Rd., Gladstone, Mo. Funeral
services will be at 7 tonight at the chapel, with the Rev. Dr. Joseph A.
Culpepper officiating. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mount
Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha. Memorials are suggested to the church, 1501 S. 40th
St., Kansas City, Kan. 66102.
WEIBLING-Funeral services for
Mrs Charlotte A. Weibling,
57, of Robinson, were held from the Casselman-Meek Funeral Home of Hiawatha,
at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, 1986, with President W. Howard Sailors, of the
Hiawatha Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints. James
W. Leafty offered a prayer. The eulogy was given by Boyd Fridell. Mrs MacHenry
Feuerbacher, organist, accompanied Irma Porkony, vocal soloist, who sang
"In the Garden" and "O My Father," Mrs Feuerbacher also accompanied the
congregation in singing "Through Deepening Trials" and "There is a Green
Hill," Honorary escorts were Richard Weibling, Don Patty, Wallace Proffitt
George Walls, Frank Hedrick and Dean Folsom. Serving as pallbearers were
Steve McGiness, R. Lawrence Burkey, James W. Leafty, LaVern M. Pinkston,
Wesley Hedrick, Terry Hedrick and Arlie Hedrick. Interment was at the Rose
Hill Cemetery, Robinson. The deceased's
