Joseph Leroy Johnson was born in Oregon, Holt County, Missouri in 1855 to George Johnson (1819-1876) and Mary Ann “Polly” Courier Johnson (1823-1860). Joseph is recorded in the 1860 United States Census in Richmond, Nemaha County, Kansas Territory, at the age of 5 with his father, four brothers, and a sister. Joseph’s mother, had died in Sabetha, Nemaha, Kansas Territory on March 17, 1860 and was buried in Sabetha Cemetery.



Joseph was in Barton County, Missouri, by 1870, with his father and step-mother (George Johnson married Sarah Melissa Connor in 1868) and a younger brother. Joseph married Phoebe Elizabeth Elmore (1854–1935) on January 29, 1874, in Barton County, Missouri.



Phoebe was born in Lafayette, Tippecanoe County, Indiana, to Matthias Elmore (1828-1902) and Priscilla Irene Misner (1834–1926). She was in Barton County, Missouri, by 1870 with her family.



Joseph and Phoebe had their first two children in Missouri. By 1879, they were in Kansas and seven more children were born in Kansas. The following children were born in Nemaha County:



Jester Charles Johnson (1884-1965), born September 6, 1884, in Bern.

Rosetta Elsie Johnson Leslie Pullen (1886-1969), born August 13, 1886, in Bern.

Eliza Matilda Johnson Burton Newton (1888-1947), born September 20, 1888, in Taylor Rapids.

Myrtle Alice Johnson Todd Mecum (1892-1965), born June 8, 1892, in Taylor Rapids.



The following children are buried in Nemaha County:



Clara Irene Johnson Cordill (1874-1957) died February 15, 1957, in Bern, and is buried in Bern Cemetery.

Mary May Johnson (1879-1879) was born and died on December 7, 1889, in Oswego, Labette County, Kansas, and was buried in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Seneca.



Joseph and Phoebe lived most of the last 30 years of their lives in Kansas City, Kansas, and are buried in Maple Hill Cemetery in Kansas City.
