All in the latter 1800s, our Grandmother was an O'ROURKE before she married a DULING. Granddad's Mother's maiden name was Katherine Elizabeth McCARTY. We have some information, our Grandmother was the 9th child of the O'ROURKE's she was born in November 1889. Grandfather William John DULING was born in August 1891. His father was born stateside and his Grandfather was born in 1824 in Ireland. He became an American citizen after he immigrated. Don't know a thing about the McCARTY family. Many burials in St. Paul, Kansas of the O'ROURKE family. The Grandparents DULING are in the cemetery north of Walnut, Kansas, along with a lot of other DULING family.

PIERCE...JOHNSTON
Pat Brockett (vicbrockett@earthlink.net) 2 April 1999
My Great-Grandfather, Thomas H. PIERCE, b: 17 March 1836 in Hart Co., KY, and wife, Susan Durbin PIERCE, b: 19 August 1842 in Illinois, were living in Neosho Co., KS by 1870. Both are buried in the St. Francis Cemetery in St. Paul. Thomas, d: 14 February 1888 and Susan, d: 23 February 1922. She remarried after Thomas' death to George Alfred JOHNSTON on 6 April 1891. The children of Thomas H. PIERCE and Susan Durbin PIERCE are as follows: Sarah A. PIERCE, b: 27 January 1865 in Sangamon Co., IL; James Rhodes PIERCE, b: 7 August 1868 in Pawnee, Sangamon Co., IL; Harriet Rebecca PIERCE, b: 6 June 1871 in Osage Mission, Neosho Co., KS; George Alfred PIERCE, b: 27 June 1874 in Osage Mission, Neosho Co., KS; William Roy PIERCE (my Grandfather), b: 5 March 1877 in Osage Mission, Neosho Co., KS; Louis Washington PIERCE, b: 7 January 1881 in Osage Mission, Neosho Co., KS; and Gertrude Mary PIERCE, b: 4 May 1885 in Osage Mission, Neosho Co., KS. Thomas' father was Daniel R. PIERCE, b: abt. 1810 in Hardin Co., KY. On 16 April 1831 he married Susana GOODMAN who was b: abt. 1807 in VA. Three children are listed on the 1850 Hardin CO., KY census in the household of Daniel and Susana. The children listed are; William Y. PIERCE, b: abt. 1832 in KY; Rebecca A. PIERCE, b: abt. 1834 in KY; and Thomas H. PIERCE, previously mentioned.
Daniel and wife Susana are buried in the St. Francis Cemetery in St. Paul. William Y. PIERCE and wife Harriette, are too. There is also a Samuel and wife Ann(a) who are buried there as well. I suspect that Samuel is an older son of Daniel and Susana. Samuel is living next door on the 1870 Neosho Co., KS census. I am confused by the marriage date (1831) for Daniel and Susana compared to the birth year for Samuel (1827). When I first started doing this research, I was told that Thomas' father was Samuel and that the PIERCE's were from Grayson Co., KY (so I am pretty sure there is a family connection), but then I found Thomas listed in the household of Daniel on the 1850 KY census. Are there any other descendants of any of the above mentioned people who are searching these same lines? Perhaps by working together we can figure this all out.

DuPERL
Gary Converse (converse@primary.net) 1 April 1999
I recently purchased a postcard in an antique store in Michigan, addressed to a Miss Mary McLaughlin, 937 Mary Street, Flint, Michigan. The picture on the postcard is the Neosho County River Bridge in Chanute, Kansas. It is postmarked January 20, 1912 - mailed from Chanute. The writer's signature is a bit difficult to read, but I think it is from a Mrs. J. M. DuPerl. It reads:
"Dear Friend, Your card at hand. Was great to hear from you. We are having our share of cold weather in this state. I enjoy it fine. I have been feeling pretty good. Hope this finds you well. Do you remember I took the picture of the train? It was fine. Will send you one soon. Glad to hear from you anytime."
Perhaps somebody in Chanute or researching Neosho County is related to this person or has interest in this postcard. Feel free to contact me.

John S. DeHART married Martha Frances ADAMS. Their daughter, born in Erie, Kansas, Mary Angelina DeHART, married Joseph Marion SHARP, born 1905 there. Oral tradition in the family is that the SHARP family assumed that name in 1863

Daughter of Pleasant ADAMS and Patsy Powell ADAMS. This is all we know of this family. Particularly interested in any info on the SHARP/HUDSON family.

Earlton on old Route 2 and 1 1/2 miles north. My grandparent's third and fifth children were born at the homestead, while their fourth was born in
Bartlesville, OK when it was still Indian territory. CANVILLE...CANFIL Arthur Canfil, Jr. (artcanfil@aol.com) 17 Mar 98 A. B. CANVILLE was a Frenchman who set up a trading post in Neosho Co., KS in 1844. I believe I am descended from O. S. CANFIL, of Haddam, Washington Co., KS who was in Haddam during the Civil War. Aside from general information (such as that the English and Irish names, Canfield, Canfill and Canfil, and the French names Caenville and Canville are all variations of the same Norman family name, de Caenville), I have not been able to trace my ancestors back past the
Haddam CANFIL's, and even those I've documented poorly thus far. In the hope
that perhaps Neosho County's A. B. CANVILLE was either an ancestor or closely related to one, I am posting this query. It seems that A. B. CANVILLE was old enough at the time of the 1865 census to possibly have already had a previous family back in the time he ran an Indian trading post. If A. B. CANVILLE was continuously in Kansas from when he opened his trading post in 1844, it seems reasonable that at least some of the children (at least those born in Missouri) likely were adopted by him whenever he married his wife Mary. I would also suppose from the ages and places of birth of the children that Mary and her children that were born in Missouri migrated to Neosho Co., Kansas around 1856 to 1858. On 1 May 1857, for instance Mary would have been 30 years old, and A. B. CANVILLE would have been 56. I suppose that Mary was a Great Osage, as there were many of the Osage nation in Neosho Co., at that time who had migrated from Missouri. Did A. B. CANVILLE move to Oklahoma when the Osage were forced to go there? Where in Oklahoma were the Great Osage of Neosho Co., relocated to? Why did Mary and her brood come to Neosho Co., from Missouri so much later than did the other Great Osage (assuming she was of that nation)? Even if A. B. CANVILLE turns out not to be a close ancestor, I am interested in finding out
more about this fellow and his family. If anyone really cares about all this, and has local historical information, or information about A. B. CANVILLE, Mary, their ancestors, or any of their descendants (separately or together), I would appreciate to hear about it via e-mail. Thank You for taking the time to read this overly long query!

MAJOR...GRIGGS...MURFIELD...CARROLL...DOBBINS Linda (doghouse@jefnet.com) 7 Mar 98 My Grandmother, Colleen MAJOR was born in Chanute, Neosho County, Kansas October 1909. Her Parents, Samuel Collier (born 1881 in MO/TX?) and Leona (GRIGGS, born 1889 in Oklahoma, Indian Territory) MAJOR, were actors on the legitimate stage, and the reason she was born in Chanute, Kansas was that Leona's sister, Margaret 'Ethel' (GRIGGS) MURFIELD was living there at the time. I have tried searching the census records for Ethel in 1910 without success. I have tried other records too without success either. Ethel was married to Charles Adelate MURFIELD. They had a daughter named Voyle, born in 1906. Voyle married a man named CARTER. I have been having a hard time trying to find any of Leona's family because her mother, Mary Alice 'Mollie' (CARROLL) died in 1893 in Oklahoma. Their father George Washington GRIGGS remarried to a Irma DOBBINS, but George died in 1900, leaving a young widow with 2 new children of theirs plus 4 girls from his previous marriage to 'Mollie'. George and 'Mollie' (CARROLL) GRIGGS had the following children; Margaret 'Ethel', Bertha (I think I saw a census record list her as Beatrice for 1920 Oklahoma), Leona and Georgia 'Gail'. After George's death the girls were split up and never reunited again, so when my grandmother was born in Chanute, it must have been only for a short duration, as Samuel & Leona were back on the road working as actors. I have not had any luck finding Samuel or Leona in any census since 1900. I guess this was because of them always being on the road. Can anyone please help me locate any of the above people? Linda, Wisconsin
