HILL CITY - Clarence
H. Eichman, 80, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at Graham County Hospital, Hill
City. He was born Aug. 9, 1921, in rural Palco to Fred Henry and Ethel Mae
(Hedge) Eichman. He married Dula LaBarge on Nov. 24, 1958, in Damar. He was a
longtime Damar area resident, and had been an oil field pumper and had worked
for KN Energy Co. for 15 years before he retired in 1986. He was a member of St.
Joseph Catholic Church, Damar, and the American Legion.

PALCO - Freida J. Allphin, 76, died Thursday, Dec. 6,
2001, at Plainville Rural Hospital. She was born June 13, 1925, in Ellis to John
and Mary (Armbrister) Zachman. She graduated from Ellis High School. She married
Verlin Allphin on March 30, 1951, in Ponca City, Okla. He died Oct. 2, 1996. She
was a homemaker and a member and former board member of the Palco United
Methodist Church. She was president of the United Methodist Women, and member of
the Pleasant Hour Club, Sunflower (article cut off at this point.)

Larry A. Dougherty was born Jan. 1, 1936, on the family farm in Rooks County to
Dale and May (Mead) Dougherty, the oldest of seven children. He attended Codell
High School. After graduating he went to work at Kansas Department of
Transportation in Phillipsburg. Along with KDOT, Larry also worked at Moore's
Texaco and later doing home improvement work through the years. Larry enjoyed
camping, hunting, auctions, woodworking and rebuilding and remodeling their
home. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and the Borderline Gun
Club. He retired from KDOT after 41 years of service at the level of Sub-Area
Supervisor.
On May
24, 1956, Larry married Ruth Joan Winchell of Liberal. To this union five sons
were born: Karl A. and wife Sherie and Earl D. of Phillipsburg, Daryl L. and
wife Linda of Agra, Neil G. and wife Gala of Winfield and Oren P. and wife Kari
Jo of Meade; 17 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Larry passed away
at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege, Neb. on Friday, Sept. 21,
after a long illness.
His family and friends will sadly miss him.
Funeral
services were held Monday, Sept. 24 at 10:30 a.m. in Olliff-Boeve Memorial
Chapel with Rev. Jack Kersenbrock officiating.
Mary Lutz, vocalist, sang "In
The Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross" accompanied by Jean Ann Wagner.
Casket
bearers were: Karl, Neil, Daryl, Oren and Earl Dougherty and Don Born. Honorary
bearers were all of his grandchildren and Ron Miller.
Interment was in the
Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.
Arrangements were handled by Olliff-Boeve
Memorial Chapel.
Card of Thanks. We appreciate the kind expressions of
sympathy that we received at the time of Larry's death. Thank you all so much
for the flowers, memorials and other kindnesses. A special thanks to the Church
of Christ Ladies of both Agra and Phillipsburg and to our friends in the Agra

PELLA — Bessie "Bess" Van
Dusseldorp, 93, of Pella, formerly of Prairie City, died from a heart ailment
Monday, Dec. 17, at the Pella Regional Health Center in Pella.
Funeral
services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at the First Reformed Church in Prairie City
with the Rev. Joel Brummel officiating. Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Prairie
City is handling arrangements.
Friends may call after noon at the funeral
home where family will be available from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
The daughter of
Leonard and Tillie De Jong Jabaai, she was born May 11, 1908, in Palco, Kan. On
Feb. 23, 1939, she married Leo Van Dusseldorp in Prairie City. She was a member
of the First Reformed Church in Prairie City and of the Faith and Mission Circle
group of the church. She was a homemaker and enjoyed making pies and won several
awards at the Jasper County Fair.
Survivors include her husband, three
daughter and two sons-in-law, Elaine and Bert E. Bandstra of Oskaloosa, Janice
Swenson of Clive and Charlotte and David McClellan of Prairie City; seven
grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her
parents, two sisters, five brothers, a son-in-law and a granddaughter. (see

Stockton. He was a former resident of Stockton.

wife, Hillary; father, Michael of Orleans, Neb.; mother and stepfather, Nila and
Jonathan Denton of Stockton; brothers, Michael Jr. of Colorado Springs, Matthew
of Denver; grandparents, Lowell and Geoa Norris of Osborne, Clyde and Hope
Denton of Stockton.

Kansas on June 26, 1916, one of 17 children to John Wesley Nelson and Minnie
Belle Solenbuger. She married Louis Oldfield on November 27, 1936. Ethel was a
member of Jehovah"s Witnesses.
Surviving are three children, Robert, Joan,
Kendel, and one sister. She was preceded in death by her husband and one child
Linda.

PLAINVILLE -- Stella L. McConchie, 94, Plainville, died
Friday, Dec. 14, 2001. Mrs. McConchie was born L. Carmichael on Dec. 12, 1907,
at rural Ellis County. She was a teacher and a homemaker and helped run the
family farm.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William " Bill" in
1964 and a daughter, Shoulders in 1997.
Survivors include a son, Dale of
Plainville 10 grandchildren 17 great-grandchildren and three
great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at
Plainville United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Plainville Cemetery.

Medical Center, in care of Moore-Overlease Funeral Chapel, 409 S. Cochran,

CLAYTON, Kan. -- Virginia M. (Howard) Griffith, 81, died Tuesday (Dec. 11, 2001)
at the Decatur County Hospital in Oberlin.
She was born March 7, 1920, at
Stockton, Kan., to Fred and Elizabeth (Montgomery) Howard. She graduated from
Logan High School and Kansas State University.
On May 31, 1948, she married
Norman Jay Griffith at Manhattan, Kan. She was a homemaker, and lived her entire
married life in the Clayton area.
She was a member of the Clayton United
Methodist Church where she served as treasurer for 50 years, was a 4-H leader, a
member of the L. D. Club, and was a Sunday School teacher. She was preceded in
death by her parents.
Survivors include her husband, Jay of Clayton two sons,
" Chuck" Griffith and wife, Clayton, and Michael Griffith and wife, Jane of
Atwood one sister, Peggy Goodman of Orland, Calif. and seven grandchildren.
Services will be Friday, 2 p.m., at the United Methodist Church in Clayton with
the Rev. Charles Keller officiating. Interment will be a the Clayton Cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Brantley Funeral Home of
Atwood, and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.
Memorials may be given in her name to the Clayton United Methodist Church.
Brantley Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Vera Vivian
Weavering-Bartels-Masurek, 94, died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, at St. John's
Pleasant Valley Hospital after a brief illness. She was born Dec. 8, 1906, in
Plainville, Kan., and was raised on the Weaverling family farm in Codell, Kan.
While a teenager, she was a member of the 1921-1922 Kansas State Championship
Girls' Basketball Team.
She married Pete Bartels, also from Kansas, and they
moved to Ventura in 1936. She worked as a leather seamstress for 30 years at the
Star Glove Leather Factory on Ventura Avenue. Mr. Bartels owned the OK Barber
Shop on Main Street and Thompson Boulevard in Ventura. He preceded her in death
in 1968.
She remarried a widower, Frank Mazurek, who also preceded her in
death in 1991. They lived in the Mira Valle Mobile Home Park in Ojai. She was
known in Ojai as "The Dollmaker," as she reconditioned dolls and returned them
for sale at the Little House.
She had always been active, and at age 94 was
still doing seamstress work and taking regular walks around Villa Los Posas
where she had lived for the past three years.
Mrs. Mazurek is survived by her
sons and daughters-in-law, Ned and Pat Bartels, of Somis, and Daryl and Jo
Bartels, of Lebec; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She had
eight brothers and one sister; her only surviving brother is Bert Weaverling of
Auburn, Calif.
Memorial services were held Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at 1 p.m.
at Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai. Interment was at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park
in Camarillo.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home.

2001. Born July 19, 1973 in Aurora, Colo. he was the son of Lawrence E. "Larry"
and Pamela S. Roberts (nee Morin). Dustin was a 1991 graduate of Chatfield High
School, Littleton, Colo. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Business
from Western State College, Gunnison, Colo. and was a member of Delta Zeta Pi
business fraternity and Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity. After graduation he
began his career with Mellon Mortgage and later was employed by Chase Manhattan
Bank as a loan finance officer. He is survived by his parents, two sisters:
Francyne and her husband Joel A. Altman, and Amanda Roberts all of Goose Creek;
maternal grandmother Irene Morin and paternal grandparents: Edmond and Rita
Roberts, all of Damar, Kan.; uncles, aunts and numerous cousins. A Mass of
Christian Liturgy will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 12, 2001 at
Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 510 St. James Ave., Goose Creek. The
family will receive friends Tuesday, December 11, 2001 from 6-8 p.m. with a
Rosary service beginning at 7 p.m. at the church. Interment will be held
Saturday, December 15, 2001 at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Damar, Kan. Arrangements

Kirwin with Ed and Agnes Schlansky. She grew up in Kirwin, graduating from
Kirwin High School. She married Virgil Blecha on Aug. 17, 1938, on the family
farm near Kirwin. She had been a Woodston resident since 1952, moving to
Plainville in 1992. She was a homemaker and with her husband, was a custom

agent at Schult Mobile Homes, Plainville. A longtime resident of Plainville, she

Council Grove, Kansas - Roe W. Groom, 101, Council Grove, died Wednesday,
November 21, 2001 at a Council Grove nursing home. Mr. Groom was in charge of
maintenance and drove a school bus for the Council Grove school district for
about 30 years. He retired from the Rural Electric Association in 1965. He was
born July 8, 1901, in Plainville, the son of William G. and Rachel E. Shumard
Groom He had lived in Council Grove since 1939. Mr. Groom did historical
research on the Santa Fe Trail and the Civil War. He walked more that 800 miles
in support of the Arthritis Foundation. He was a member of the Council Grove
United Methodist Church, National Geographical Society, Girl Scouts of America
and a former member of the Masonic Lodge. He married Alice Meade in 1924, She
died in 1986. He married Althea Collins Groom on April 7, 1988. She survives.
Other survivors include two daughters. Dorothy Radke, Wichita, and Lois Hylton,
Waterloo, Iowa two sons, Glenn Groom, San Antonio, Texas, and Kenneth Groom,
Kent, Washington Two stepchildren, Ronna Simpson and Ricky Groom, both of
Plainville. 10 grandchildren five step grandchildren 11 great-grandchildren six
step great-grandchildren and one step great-great grandchild.
Services will
be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Council Grove United Methodist Church, Burial will
be in Greenwood Cemetery in Council Grove. Groom will lie in state from 9 a.m.
to 8 p.m. Monday at Memorial Chapel of the Flint Hills in Council Grove.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Council Grove United Methodist Church
or to the Arthritis Foundation and sent in care of the funeral chapel. Article

Cushing, to Thelma and Lloyd Stallings. William Savory of Yale was her special
companion of several years. She spent a lot of time having fun, being with her
mother Thelma, and also spending time with her children and three grandchildren.

Yale; one son, Chris Ratliff of Yale; one daughter, Valerie Mitchell and her
husband Thomas of Yale; one sister, Brenda Lann and husband Tony of Kingfisher;

Veverka, 88, of Plainville died Friday, October 19, 2001 at the Plainville Rural
Hospital.
She was born July 30, 1913 in rural Rooks County, the daughter of
William and Emily (Gick) O'Brien. She attended school in Plainville. Goldie was
united in marriage to Morris Veverka on October 17, 1929 in Great Bend, Kansas.
Her entire life was spent in and around the community of Plainville where she
was a very supportive member of the community which she dearly loved. Her
memberships included Dorcas Club, PEO Chapter, Bridge Club and the First
Christian Church. Goldie worked at a variety of part time jobs, but the one she
was most proud of was rural substitute Mail Carrier for the United States Postal
Service.
She is survived by her daughter Yvonne (Paul) Van Dyke of Plainville
three grandchildren, Van Dyke of Plainville, Paula (Dr. Lawrence) Waldrop of Los
Alamitos, California, (Michael) Travis of Danville, California: 4 great
grandchildren and 2 step grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her
parents and in 1975 her husband Morris.
Services at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday,
October 23,2001, at the First Christian Church in Plainville, Kansas with Pastor
R. Mark Huntley officiating. Pat Bartlett, organist and Shari Page. soloist
singing Hymn of Promise and the congregation joined in singing On Eagles Wings.
Visitation was held Monday, 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the Plainville Funeral Home,
320 SW Second Street, and Tuesday 9 a.m. until noon at the Church. Interment
will be in the Plainville City Cemetery.
Memorials in her honor may be made
to the First Christian Church or to the Andreson Memorial Park and left at the
funeral home.

Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001. He was born Aug. 2, 1915, on the family farm in Graham
County to Joseph Abraham and Minnie Mable (Hawks) Barber. He grew up in Graham
and Rooks counties, attending rural schools. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He
married Lucille Marie Yeagy on April 1, 1945, in Pratt. He retired after 18
years as manager of the bulk fuel service at the Plainville Co-op.

CONCORDIA --- Sister
Frederic Eilert, 89, Concordia, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, at the Nazareth
Convent in Concordia. Sister Eilert taught in schools staffed by the Sisters of
St. Joseph in Concordia, Junction City, Plainville, Gorham, Salina, Park,
Marymount College and in Grand Island, Neb. She served on the Leadership Team of
the Sisters of St. Joseph from 1965 to 1970. She worked at St. Mary's Convent in
Concordia from 1986 until it closed in 1997. She was born April 3, 1912, in
Scottsville, the daughter of Fred and Elizabeth Selting Eilert. She was baptized
Gertrude Elizabeth and entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph in
Concordia on March 18, 1934, where she received the religious name Sister
Frederic. She made first vows on March 19, 1935, and final vows on Aug. 15,
1938. She graduated from Marymount College in Salina with a bachelor's degree in
education. She earned a master's degree in education from Creighton University
in Omaha, Neb.
Survivors include three sisters, Sister Redempta Eilert,
Concordia, Rita Mans, Osborne, and Cecilia Streit, Tipton; and two brothers,
Brother Lawrence SJ, St. Louis, and Eugene Eilert, Beloit.
The Liturgy of
Christian Burial will be offered at 3 p.m. today at Nazareth Convent Chapel in
Concordia. Burial will be in the convent cemetery.
Memorial contributions may
be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph Retirement Fund or to the Apostolic Works
of the Sisters and sent in care of Chaput-Buoy Mortuary in Concordia.

on Dec. 30, 1976, in Natoma. She was a longtime Natoma resident. She was a
homemaker and former Avon consultant. She was a member of the Natoma United

Stricker on June 10, 1951, in Russell. She worked for Bankers Department Store,
Russell County Farm Bureau, Agco Inc., and for several years was a seamstress.
She was a member of the United Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Milberger.
Survivors
include her husband, of the home three sons, Salina, John, Russell, and Aurora,
Neb. her mother, Ellinwood a brother, James Lee Pruter North Pole, Alaska 10
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her
father.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Emmanuel
Lutheran Church, Milberger, with the Keith Krietzer officiating burial in
Milberger Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at

Funeral services for Seminole
resident Diane Carter Simpson are scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Macedonia
Baptist Church in Wewoka. Revs. Fred Morrison and Jimmy Moreland will officiate
the services. Burial will follow at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Seminole
under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.
Simpson died Sunday, Sept. 9,
2001 at Midwest City Regional Hospital at the age of 44. She was born to George
Washington Conley II and Florene (Osborne) Carolina on Nov. 3, 1956 in Wewoka.
Simpson lived in Seminole for 41 years, moving here from Wichita, Kan. She was a
certified Med Aide, certified CNA, and foot re- flexologist. Simpson was an
ordained minister, Sunday school teacher, and head cook at New Lima Schools for
13 years. She was a member of the Lords Community Church in Seminole.
Simpson
was preceded in death by her mother.
She is survived by her father; her
husband, J.C. Simpson, of the home; one son, Broc Carter, Shawnee; one daughter,
Karla Carter, Oklahoma City; three brothers, Anthony Conley, Sr., Midwest City,
George Conley III, Wichita, Kan., and Shane Austin, Stockton, Kan; three
sisters, Dr. Vickie Carter, Seminole, Mary Andrews, Seminole, and Kristi
Rittenhower, Wichita, Kan.; and two grandchildren. Pallbearers are Anthony
Conley Jr., Brian Harjo, Claude Thompson, Bruce Carter, Curtis Andrews and
Johnny Andrews. Honorary pallbearers were James Simpson, Hayword McGregor,
Johnny Meeks, Jimmy Moreland, Zelvin Nichols and Marvin Nichols.

Jake Lamar Pittman, 71, died Sept. 2 at Medical College of Georgia from injuries
in an automobile accident. The Toombs County native was a longtime resident of
Reidsville. He was a correctional officer at Georgia State Prison for 19 years
and owner of Pittman Bait and Tackle. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean
War and a member of Abundant Faith Fellowship Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Mrs. Dunbar
was born on Feb. 13, 1906, in Palco, Kan., to Samuel and Mae (Adamson) Stithem.
When she was 12, her family moved by covered wagon from Kansas to Nebraska. They
moved to the Climax community, west of Anselmo in Custer County. She attended
elementary school in Kansas and Milburn, and high school to the 11th grade. As a
young girl, she worked for two maids near Broken Bow. She had many other jobs
after that. She worked for the Cleve Turner Families at the Milburn Store. She
married Frank Mattox on April 15, 1925. She then married Fred A. Dunbar on March
11, 1930. The couple made their home in West Loup County, where they lived for
61 years. She spent her last eight years at Beverly Health Care at Sargent. She
was a charter member of the Clever Clique Club. She pieced and quilted many
quilts and hosted many meetings in their home. She loved having company and
fixing many Thanksgiving dinners for the relatives. She raised turkeys, geese
and chickens by the hundreds. She always had a flock of laying hens, big gardens
and delicious strawberries by the gallons. She canned her yearly supply of
vegetables and meat. She spent holidays and birthdays preparing service boxes of
goodies for her sons, her brother, brother-in-law and nephews. She was a devoted
housewife, excellent cook and loved to sew and sing.
Survivors include two
sons and daughter-in-law, Leroy Mattox of Buena Vista, Colo., and Floyd and
Betty Dunbar of Taylor; one daughter and son-in-law, Maybelle and Art Dilsaver
of Taylor; one brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Violet Stithem of Anselmo;
nine grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Dunbar; three brothers, Otto,
Delwin and Ivan; five sisters, Francis, Beulah, Lois, Agnes and Olive; one
daughter-in-law Charlotte Mattox and two grandsons.

married Johnnie L. Hulse on March 28, 1934, in Stockton. He died Nov. 20, 1986.

EL DORADO KS J. Winters, 89, died Sunday, Aug. 16,
2001, at the Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital.
He was born May 6, 1912, in a
sod house in Rooks County to W. J. and Dollie (North) Winters. He attended
country school and graduated from Plainville High School.
He married Dorothy
Irene Harman in 1942 in Carthage, Mo. She died in April 1988. He worked for
Cities Services production department for 25 years in Plainville and El Dorado,
retiring in 1973. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of El Dorado, Veterans of
Foreign Wars and a charter member of the Plainville Saddle Club, Department of
Public Safety Reserves and Butler County Sheriff´s Posse.
Survivors include a
brother, A. Winters, Lake Arrowhead, Calif.
He was preceded in death by a
brother, D. E. Winters.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the First
Christian Church, Plainville burial in the Plainville Cemetery.
Visitation
will be from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at the Plainville Funeral Home.

Aug. 19, 2001, at her home.
She was born May 31, 1928, in rural Stockton to
Adryn and Goldye (Hazen) Glendening.
She married Duane D. Hunter on March 27,
1949, in Stockton. He died July 11, 1966. She married Ivan Smith on Nov. 28,
1988. He died March 7, 1994.
She was a deputy clerk for 10 years, an original
member of the reappraisal group for the assessor´s office and worked in the
Rooks County courthouse map room. She was a life member of the Stockton United
Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She was a 50-year member of the
Stockton VFW Auxiliary, longtime member of the Century Club, Stockton
Promotional Club and was a volunteer for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Survivors include a son, Steven Hunter Stockton a daughter, Brenda Garcia,
Stockton a brother, John Glendenning Stockton a sister, Renze, Wichita and two
grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist
Church, Stockton, with the Rev. Tim Ault-Duell officiating burial in Stockton
Cemetery.
Visitation will be until 8 p.m. today and from 9 to 10 a.m.
Wednesday at the Smith-Moore-Overlease Funeral Chapel, Stockton, and from 11

Jack Bradford Baker, 89, of
Charlotte, N.C., died Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at Sharon Towers. Mr. Baker was
born Dec. 23, 1911, in Stockton, Kan., a son of the late Albert M. Baker and
Mary Volkhardt Baker. He attended the public schools in Albany, Mo., and
graduated from Georgia Tech., where he received his BS degree in Electrical
Engineering. He was a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Tau Beta Pi, both Honorary
Fraternities. He also attended Harvard University, where he received his MS
degree in Electrical Engineering. In 1934, Mr. Baker joined the Kendall Co. in
Walpole, Mass. He held various management positions in Massachusetts, South
Carolina, and North Carolina. In 1956, he returned to Harvard Business School
where he was enrolled in their Advanced Management Program. He retired as
Director of Manufacturing in the Textile Division in 1976, after 43 years with
Kendall. Mr. Baker was active in various textile trade associations, including
American Textile Manufacturing Institute, South Carolina Textile Manufacturing
Association, and Alabama Textile Manufacturing Association. He was Past
President of Charlotte Textile Club and Past President of Charlotte Georgia Tech
Club. He was a member of Myers Park Presbyterian Church and the Frontis Johnson
Bible Class. In addition to his family, Mr. Baker enjoyed golf, gardening and
water skiing.
Mr. Baker is survived by his second wife, Sue Efird Baker; his
daughter, Cynthia Kay Baker, of Martinez, Calif.; his son and daughter-in-law,
Douglas Bradford Baker and Cindy Kilner Baker, of Spartanburg; and his grandson,
Brian Bradford Baker, of Abingdon, Va. Mr. Baker was preceded in death in 1996
by his first wife of 61 years, Dorothy Adams Baker.
A memorial service will
be held at 2 p.m. today, July 26, 2001, at Harry and Bryant Chapel, 500
Providence Road, Charlotte, N.C., with the Rev. John Alexander officiating. The
family will receive friends following the service at Sharon Towers, 5100 Sharon
Road, Charlotte. Interment will be at Sharon Memorial Park.

Saturday, July 14, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 11212 Woodruff
Ave., for Willie (Bill) Butler, who died June 28, and his wife, Thelma LaRue
Butler, who died June 29. He was 91, born Oct. 8, 1909 near Brice, Missouri. She
was 87, born July 19, 1913 near Woodston, Kansas. At age seven he moved with his
family by covered wagon to a ranch near Woodston. They were married Dec. 25,
1929, 71½ years ago. Together they operated a cream station and cafe in Ionia,
Kansas, a cafe in Formoso, Kansas, and a maintenance service in Santa Monica,
California. After moving to Fort Collins, Colorado, Bill worked on construction
of the Horsetooth Dam, Dairygold, Sterling Company, and Heath Engineering.
Thelma worked as a cook for drive-ins, including Buckeye, Jo's and Hurley's.
They lived in Southern California and Oregon for several years, and have resided

Butler of Ordway, Colorado, Riggle Butler of Beloit, Kansas; and a sister, Famy
Fry of Stockton, California. Thelma, the fifth of five children, is survived by
a sister, Estella Taylor of Mankato, Kansas.

Pryntha Winfrey of Fort Collins, Colorado, Coralea (Gene) Yaw of Downey; a son,
Gary (Connee) Butler of Jacksonville, Florida; nine grandchildren, eight
great-grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren.

her family, gardening and the outdoors, and was a resident of Piney View for 40
years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Meadows; a son, Keith
Meadows; four brothers, Raymond, Larry, Kenny and Roy "Joe" Pendry; and a
sister, Brenda Sue Pendry.
Survivors include three sons, Kevin Meadows and
his wife, Beverly, of Piney View, Kem Meadows and his wife, Ginger, of Stanaford
and Bruce Meadows and his wife, Barbara, of Shady Spring; five grandchildren,

follow in Hilltop Cemetery, Nyssa. He was born April 18, 1914, in Palco, Kansas,
the son of Boyd and Clara (Hills) Saunders. He graduated from Palco High School
in Palco, Kansas. He married Cleta Mae Kellogg Aug. 6, 1939, Agallah, Kansas.
Kenneth taught in several rural schools in Kansas and in Parma. After teaching,
he delivered fuel to farmers for several years. He worked as an appraiser for
Malheur County for 10 years before retiring. During retirement, he drove the
Nyssa Senior Citizens bus, delivering meals and taking seniors to doctor
appointments. He was a long-standing, faithful member of the Nyssa Church of the
Nazarene where he served on the church board and drove the church bus. He was a
friend to everyone he met and willing to help those in need. He had a great
sense of humor and love of reciting poems and stories. Kenneth is survived by; a
sister, Vesta Foss of Stockton, Kan.; a son, Kenneth Eugene Saunders and
daughter-in-law, Edith of Issaquah, Wash.; a daughter, Karen Annette Calvin and
son-in-law, T. J. of Priest River, Idaho; a son, David Milton Saunders and
daughter-in-law, Ruth of Wellington, Colo.; a son, Larry Wayne Saunders of
Ontario; a son, Merle Dean Saunders and daughter-in-law, Joy of Nyssa; 14

Church and served as a deacon. He was also a member of Paradise Lodge No. 290,
Plainville.

grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Mike four brothers, Vern,
Reece, and Thomas and three sisters, Myrtle, Zella and Audrey.

Plainville and was a lifetime resident of Rooks County. He was a
farmer-stockman.
Survivors include two sisters, Mildred Finnesy of Plainville
and Oliva of Stockton.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at
Smith-Moore-Overlease Funeral Chapel, Stockton, the Don Rock officiating. Burial
will be in Plainville Cemetery.

Solomon Valley Manor in care of the funeral home, 723 N. First, Stockton 67669.

Elizabeth C. Ordway, 87, Plainville , died Monday, Nov. 13, 2000, at
the Olathe Medical Center. She was born Feb. 8, 1913, in Ellis County, Kan., the
daughter of Ida May King and Fred A. Bemis. She married Victor R. Ordway in 1932
at Hays. He died in 1992. Most of her life was spent in the Plainville area
where the couple raised their family. During the last three years, she has lived
with her daughters in Eureka and Olathe. She was preceded in death by two
brothers, Lawrence and Ralph Bemis, and a grandson, Rodney Dean. Survivors
include three children, Robert Ordway, Iselin, N.J.; Geraldine Linenberger,
Eureka,; and Linda Evans, Olathe; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and
one step grandchild. The visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and from
9 a.m. to noon Thursday at the Plainville Funeral Home. Services will be 1:30
p.m. Thursday at the Christian Church, Plainville. Interment will be in the
Plainville Cemetery.

longtime resident of Ponca City, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, at St. Joseph
Regional Medical Center. She was 95.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10
a.m. Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with the Rev. John J.
Michalicka as celebrant. Burial will follow in the Odd Fellows Cemetery. A
rosary will be held 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000, at the Trout Funeral Home
Chapel.
Phyl was born in Okarche, Okla., to Gustav and Anna (Baustert)
Ludwig. She attended schools in Okarche and Guthrie. She received her registered
nursing degree in 1921 from the Ponca City Hospital nursing program. She married
Dr. A. S. Nuckols, a longtime Ponca City physician and surgeon. She enjoyed
family and friends, china painting and knitting. She was a member of the St.
Mary’s Catholic Church, a charter member of the Ponca City Hospital Auxiliary,
and a member of the Kay/Noble County Medical Auxiliary.
Survivors include one
daughter, Sue Brown and her husband Dr. Phillip Brown of Nashville, Tenn.; one
son, Thomas M. Nuckols and his wife Mart of Arkansas City, Kan.; six
grandchildren, Brooke Brown of Washington, D. C., Sara Brown of Nashville,
Tenn., Dr. Tom A. Nuckols of Plainville, Kan., Vicki Hensley of Arkansas City,
Kan., Nancy E. Meyer of Littleton, Colo., and the Rev. Mark S. Nuckols of Kansas
City, Mo., and eight great-grandchildren.
Phyl was preceded in death by her

Ivan R. KENYON, 90, passed away on Sunday,
September 24, 2000, at Dawson Place Nursing Home in Hill City, Kansas. He was
born March 11, 1910 in rural Graham County, Kansas, the son of Benedict
CLAUDSLEY and Belle (BOYS) KENYON. A retired farmer/stockman, Ivan was a
lifetime Bogue area resident. He married Delena CONYAC, May 14, 1934, in Damar,
Kansas, and she survives.
Ivan was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic
Church, Damar Knights of Columbus, Men's Service Club of Bogue, Farm Bureau, and
a founding member of the Bogue Pinochle Club. He had been a member of the Bogue
School Board.
Ivan is survived by his wife, Delena KENYON, of Hill City; two
sons, Gary KENYON of Great Bend, Kansas and Alan KENYON of Kansas City,
Missouri; two daughters Marilyn Kay POZAS of Glendale, Arizona and Jolene
ALEXANDER of Ottawa, Kansas; one sister, Eleanore EIKMAN, Mesa, Arizona; nine
grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his
parent; three brothers, Everette, Melvin, and Wilbur; and one sister, Mary
STEPHEN.
Funeral services were Thursday, September 28, at 11:00 a.m. at St.
Joseph Catholic Church in Damar with Father KILIAN officiating. Burial was in
St. Joseph Cemetery, Damar, Kansas. Memorials were suggested to Dawson Place in

George Irvin SAYERS, 98, passed away on Thursday, September 7, 2000, at the
Graham County Hospital in Hill City, Kansas. A retired farmer-stockman, he was a
longtime resident of Graham County. Mr. SAYERS was born on August 5, 1902 in
Nicodemus, Kansas. He was a son of George Monroe and Mary Eliza (BATES) SAYERS.
His first wife was Wilma WATSON, and she passed away in 1951. He married Bernice
JONES in 1952, and she passed away in 1978. George then married Minerva
WELLINGTON in 1979, and she survives. He was a member of the First Missionary
Baptist Church in Nicodemus, Kansas. He was a member of the church choir and
also a deacon of the church. George was a member of the Masonic Lodge. Survivors
include his wife, Minerva SAYERS of Stockton, Kansas; a son, Clarence SAYERS,
Nicodemus, Kansas; a daughter, Maxine PAYTON of Los Angeles, California; nine
step-children; seven grandchildren; and sixteen great-grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by his parents; two wives; five brothers; one sister; and one
grandchild. Funeral services will be held September 16, 2000 at the First
Missionary Baptist Church in Nicodemus, Kansas. Officiating will be Rev. I. G.
CRAWFORD. Burial will be in the Nicodemus Cemetery. Memorials were suggested to

Penny KLOEFKORN is with the Lord
after peacefully ending her nine-year battle with cancer on August 22, 2000, at
the Wyoming Medical Center with her immediate family by her side. A celebration
of Penny's life, officiated by Pastor John SPEAR at Highland Park Community
Church, took place at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, August 25, 2000. Penny asked that, in
lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Highland Park Community Church for Make a
Wish Foundation and Hospice.
Penny was born into the lives of Gerrell and
Joyce (MOWRY) VEATCH on April 3, 1958 in Palco, Kansas. In high school, Penny
was active in all sports and graduated in 1976. She went on to play college
basketball. She married Steve KEITH and from that union were born two beautiful
daughters, Shannon Leigh and Reagen Lyne. After moving to Casper, Wyoming, Penny
and Steve divorced.
Penny, while working at Conoco, was involved in
volleyball, softball, bowling, and Women of the Word Bible Study, but more than
anything, Penny was always involved in the passion of her life, loving people.
She married her soul mate, Gary KLOEFKORN, in the spring of 1989. In Women of
the Word, as she grew in the faith and grace of God, she became a magnetic light
that touched every person's life she met. Penny found the good in everyone and
found the beauty of life and living in the most basic of things. There was never
a bad day for Penny, and she devoted her life to the happiness and goodwill of
her friends, family, and acquaintances. Penny was a bridge to a better life to
all whose lives she touched.
Penny is survived by her beloved husband and
truest love, Gary; her beautiful and loving daughters, Shannon and Reagen; her
step-family, Sheila, Revae, Gina, Todd, and Jackie; her parents, Gerrel VEATCH
and Joyce GIROT; her sisters, Rocky, Tammy, and Brenda; and her brother, Mark.
She is also survived by countless family, friends, and loved ones. Penny remains
in the hearts of everyone she ever touched. Her spirit lives forever.

Marilda BELLEAU was born,
January 17, 1903, at Damar, Kansas, to Joe and Delia (ST. PETER) BRIN. She
passed away on Monday, August 28, 2000. at the Hays Medical Center, St. Anthony
Campus, Hays, Kansas, at the age of 97 years, seven months, and eleven days. On
February 22, 1925, she was united in marriage with William J. BELLEAU in St.
Joseph Catholic Church, Damar, Kansas. He passed away in 1970. A longtime area
resident and homemaker, Marilda was a resident of Sealye House in Hill City for
one year and eight months. She loved to play bridge, to read, and to crochet.
Marilda was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic church in Hill
City. She was also a member of the Altar Society and a member of the bridge
club.
Survivors include: two daughters, Alvena WEBB of Scottsdale, Arizona
and Ida BERNATT of Landcaster, California; one son, Nels BELLEAU of Hill City; a
sister, Olive Marcotte, Hays; eight grandsons and one granddaughter; eleven
great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Marilda will be lovingly
remembered by her family and friends for many years to come.
A wake service
is planned for 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, August 30, 2000, at the Immaculate Heart of
Mary Catholic Church in Hill City. Funeral services will also be held at the
local church and are planned for 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 31, 2000.
Officiating are Father Don MCCARTHY and Father Bill KILIAN. Memorials are
suggested to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Hill City.

passed away Wednesday, August 23, 2000, at Dawson Place Nursing Home in Hill
City, Kansas. She was born on October 29, 1902 at Samouth, Illinois, the
daughter of Lycurges and Florence (FINLEY) JONES.
A resident of this area
since 1979, she was a retired bookkeeper and homemaker. She married Alfred R.
"Barney" KARNS on July 31, 1921 in Ada, Kansas. He died on September 23, 1983.
Hazel was a member of the Ada Baptist Church, Ada, Kansas.
Survivors include
a son, James L. KARNS of Plainville, Kansas; and two daughters, LaDonna HENSLEY
of Hill City and Sherrill KARNS of Redding, California. Also surviving Mrs.
Karns are a brother, Gladwyn JONES of Salina, Kansas; a sister, Gladys GASAWAY
of Hill City; eight grandchildren; and eighteen great-grandchildren. Mrs. KARNS
was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Roger Max KARNS; one
brother; and one sister.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on
Saturday, August 26, 2000, at the Ada Baptist Church, Ada, Kansas, with Pastor
Ron WALKER officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Ada, Kansas. Memorials

Wendell P. Stull
CHAPMAN - Wendell P. Stull, 80, Chapman, died Tuesday, Aug.
29, 2000, at Geary Community Hospital, Junction City. Mr. Stull was born Nov.
26, 1919, at Palco and was a resident of Chapman since 1961. He coached and
taught at Holyrood for 13 1/2 years and at Chapman High School, where he was
coach of the 1965 state championship basketball team and athletic director until
retirement in 1985. He was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II and member
of Plainville Masonic Lodge, Holyrood Order of the Eastern Star, Chapman
American Legion Post 240 and Chapman United Methodist Church and was a life
member of the National Education Association. Survivors include his wife,
Dorothy of the home a son, Ronald of Topeka a sister, Wanda Braun of Russell a
stepsister, Janice Sage of Granbury, Texas and three grandchildren. The funeral
will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Chapman United Methodist Church, the Kenneth
Trickle, Jr. officiating. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Friday in Pleasant View
Cemetery, Palco. Memorials may be made to Chapman United Methodist Church or the
charity of the donor's choice. Visitation will be from Thursday morning to
Friday morning at Londeen Funeral Home, 206 W. Fifth, Chapman.

F. K. Hopkins, 75, of Bradshaw
died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, in York. He was born April 9, 1925, in Palco,
Kan., to Frank and Alma (Long) Hopkins. He completed his education at Haskell
Creek Rural School near Ord. He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II,
serving in the Pacific Theater. He moved to Bradshaw in 1946 and worked on the
construction of the Farmer's Co-op Elevator. On Feb. 14, 1947, he was married to
Mildred Anderson, a Bradshaw native, at Grand Island. He worked as the Bradshaw
Schools custodian for 41 years.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred of
Bradshaw; son, Michael of Lincoln; daughter Patrice (Ron) Weiss of York; and
grandsons, Ryan Hopkins of Lincoln and Christopher Weiss of York. Additional
survivors include his aunts, Elda Anderson of Ord, and Maxine Patterson of
Encino, Calif.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 23, at 10:30
a.m. at the Bradshaw United Methodist Church with the Rev. Seth Leypoldt and
Phil Towle officiating. The burial will be at the Utica Cemetery. There will be
cremation, with no visitation. Metz Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Arnold was born on Oct. 31, 1933 in Caldwell, Kan. She
was reared in Ashton, Kan., and graduated from Oakley High School at Oakley,
Kan. She married David Arnold on March 17, 1973 in Colby, Kan., and had lived in
Snyder seven years, moving to Cisco in 1988. She was a homemaker and a
bookkeeper.
Two brothers preceded her in death.

daughters, Ona Lopez of Cisco, Elizabeth Herron of Lincoln, Neb., Barbara

Chrisler was born Jan. 29, 1929, at Natoma, to Hettie Belle (McConnell) and
George Oren Chrisler. He graduated from Codell High School in 1946 and from
Kansas State University in 1950. He served with the U.S. Army's 40th Division in
Japan and Korea and was an operations sergeant when discharged in 1953. On March
1, 1953, he married Patricia Lawrence in Winfield. They farmed in the Tisdale
area from 1954 until ill health forced his retirement. They moved to Winfield in
1998. Chrisler built a seed-cleaning facility on his farm and was a wheat seed
grower, seed conditioner and seed salesman. He had done custom harvesting in
Texas and Oklahoma. Chrisler had served as a board member and president of the
Sumner-Cowley Electric Cooperative, Cowley County Farm Bureau and USD 465. He
was on the board when Country View Elementary School was organized and was a
board member of the USD 465 Foundation. Chrisler had been a 4-H livestock
project leader and county fair beef superintendent.. He was a member and elder
of the First Presbyterian Church and a member of the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Pat Chrisler, and a son, Randy Chrisler, both of
Winfield; a daughter, Karen Baker, Burden; a brother, Dale Chrisler, Oakley; and
three grandchildren.

She was born
March 9, 1923, to Lloyd and Vera (Claggett) Stonner in Kirwin, Kansas. She
graduated from Kirwin High School. She lived for over thirty years in several
communities throughout Kansas. She lived in Kimball since 1955. She married
Harold Richard Neusbaum in San Diego, Calif., June 5, 1943. She did clerical
work for her husband’s business, worked at Brown and Brighton Leasing Company in
Kimball, and was a homemaker. She belonged to the Jehovah’s Witnesses.
She is
survived by her daughter and sons-in-law Cherilyn and James Freuden of Kimball,
Pam and Allen Heim of Kimball, and Sheila and Randy Knutsen of Englewood, Colo.,
sister and brothers-in-law Vera Jane and Herb Glick of Plainville, Kan. and
Leanne and Charles Martin of Tulsa, Okla.; and eight grandchildren.
She was
preceded in death by her husband in February 1993.

GRENOLA - Delores Laurie, 56, a
longtime resident of Grenola, died June 19, 2000, at William Newton Memorial
Hospital.

with the Rev. Wallace Wartick officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery.
Memorials have been established with the Grenola Christian Church and the

Laurie was born Nov. 13, 1943, at Woodston, to Joseph P. and
Lucille Vorestine (Ensley) Boulanger. She attended school in Woodston and Elk
Falls before graduating from Howard High School in 1962.
She was employed in
the Moline area after high school. On Aug. 7, 1966, she married Rolland Merle
Laurie at Grenola. She was a homemaker and employed by the Kansas Social and
Rehabilitation Service's in-home care program for many years. Laurie had served
as the Grenola representative on the Elk County Council on Aging and on the
board for the Grenola Senior Center. She was a member of the Osage Nation and
the Grenola Christian Church.
Her husband died April 14, 1998.
Survivors
include her companion, Charles Barnett, Grenola two sons, Donnie Laurie Mulvane,
and Martin Laurie, Ada, Okla. two daughters, Clubb, Grenola, and Betty Krause,
Parsons three brothers, Wayne Boulanger, Independence, Boulanger Brunswick, Ga.,

Leora Mae Helton, 84, of Canon City, formerly of Florence, passed away May 29,
2000. Born March 19, 1916, in Elk City, Okla., to Thomas and Phebe (Seaton)
Fulton. Leora moved to Canon City in 1932 with her family and worked in the
school cafeterias in Canon City for several years. She was a member of Elkettes
No. 611 in Florence, VFW Auxiliary in Canon City, Royal Gorge Grange 382 and
TOPS club. She was a homemaker and worked for RE-1 school district in the food
service area. Leora loved sewing, bowling and going to her TOPS and then KOPS
meetings. In 1938, she married Edward Lawrence, who was killed during WWII. She
married Fred Helton in 1947; he preceded her in death in 1985. Leora is also
preceded in death by her parents; son, Gene; sisters, Lena Pearl Fulton and
Effie Schneider; brother, Dean Fulton; and great-granddaughter, Jamie Caretto.
Survived by daughter, Mickey (Gene) Tollis, Canon City; grandson, Stephen
(Betty) Tollis, Cheyenne; granddaughter, Gena (James) Caretto, Pueblo West;
great-grandchildren, Brittany and Eric Tollis, Cheyenne, and Tony Caretto,
Pueblo West; sister, Ollie Elley, Canon City; two brothers, Troy (Carol) Fulton,

Claude DESBIEN, she was born on October 31, 1937, in rural Palco, Kansas. She
was a secondary school teacher and had lived in Colorado for many years before
moving back to Palco in May, 2000
Jennifer was preceded in death by her
father, Claude.
She is survived by her mother, Charlotte DESBIEN, of Palco; a
son, Lieutenant Commander Michael E. PURCELL, United States Navy, and his wife,
Dierdre, Chesapeake, Virginia; two brothers, Don DESBIEN of Palco, KS, and Larry
DESBIEN of Ponca City, Oklahoma; two sisters, Mary KNOLL of Palco, KS, and Carol
O'SHEA of West Milford, New Jersey; and three grandchildren.

Phillip and Yvonne ROBERTS.
She is survived by two sons, Tony MILLER of
Thornton, Colorado, and Mary MILLER of Haysville, Kansas; two brothers, Maurice
ROBERTS of Baker, Texas, and Jerry ROBERTS of Liberal, Kansas; a sister, Alice
BARBER of Craig, Colorado; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by
a brother, Paul ROBERTS.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday,
August 31, 2000, at Smith Mortuary, Haysville, Kansas.

Inez Pearl Halbert (nee Day) was born Sunday, September 10,
1911, at Woodston, Kansas, a daughter of the late Henry and Ann (Lambert) Day.
She entered eternal rest Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at the Cox Medical Center,
Springfield, Mo., at the age of 88 years, 7 months and 23 days. On March 19,
1930 at Stockton, Kansas, Inez was united in marriage to Sion B. (Sleepy)
Halbert; son of Osco L. Halbert and Elizabeth (Sanders) Halbert. One son,
Marvin, and three daughters, Ervene, Ardell and Betty Ann, were born to this
union. They enjoyed over fifty-eight years together before his death, April 2,
1988. Inez taught public school for one year before becoming a full time mother
and homemaker extraordinaire. She was a member of Steelville Presbyterian Church
and Martha and Mary OES #364, and was homemaker of the year of her Extension
Club in 1983. She lived in Steelville for over sixty years. In addition to her
parents she was preceded in death by three sisters, Hazel Chesney, Sylvia Reed
and Dora Tustison and one brother, James Day; son-in-law Bill Hicks, and
brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Garrett Halbert, Maude Simily, Gladys Hubler,
and Josephine Munton. Among those who remain to mourn her passing are her loving
son, Marvin Halbert and wife Mary Jane of Apache Junction, Arizona; three
devoted daughters, Ervene Hicks, also of Apache Junction, Arizona, Ardell and
husband Ralph Viehman of Garland, Texas, Betty Ann and husband Dale Stevenson of
Springfield, Mo.; twelve grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, and one
great-great-grandson; and sister-in-law Ollie Halbert of Cherryville, Mo. Inez
Pearl Halbert lay in state 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. with Eastern Star Memorial Services
7:00 p.m., Saturday, May 6, 2000, at the Britton Brothers Funeral Home,
Steelville, Mo. Funeral services were held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 7, 2000, at the
Steelville Presbyterian Church with Rev. Charles D. Likely officiating. Musical
selections were provided by organist Deloris Bell and vocalist Georgia Beth
Barksdale. Honoring their grandmother as pallbearers were Doug Matchell, Jeff
Matchell, Mike Hicks, Jordan Hobbs, Mike Halbert, and Dale Fornander.

Colo. -- Marguerite Jaenicke, 89, Paonia, died Tuesday, May 9, 2000, at her
home. Mrs. Jaenicke was born Marguerite Highley on Jan. 28, 1911, at Logan,
Kan., and was a resident of Paonia since 1981, moving from Logan. She was a
homemaker and a retail sales clerk. She was member the Logan Christian Church,
the Paonia Christian Church, Willing Workers of Logan and American Legion
Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, John Conn, in
1946; her second husband, Francis Jaenicke, in 1972; a son, Jack L. Conn; and a
granddaughter.
Survivors include two sons, Rex Conn of Palco, Kan., and
Darrell Conn of Magalia, Calif.; three daughters, Phyllis Post of Colorado
Springs Midge Wheeler and Kay Zillinger, both of Paonia; 22 grandchildren; and
several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
The service will
be at 11 a.m. Monday in Pleasant View Cemetery, Logan, the Rev. James Gall
officiating.

Mrs. Olive Rome, 81, a lifelong resident of Bogue,
Kan., passed away March 29, 2000, in the Graham County Hospital in Hill City,
Kan. Mrs. Rome was born to Anthony and Louise Conyac Desbien on March 18, 1919,
in Graham County, Kan. She married Andrew R. "Andy" Rome on June 6, 1938, in
Damar, Kan. Mrs. Rome was a homemaker and worked as a cook. She was a member of
the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Damar.
She was preceded in death by her
husband who died March 4, 1998; her parents; three brothers, Art Desbien, Gene
Desbien and Harvey Desbien; two sisters in infancy and two sisters Mrs. Alice
Moos and Mrs. Alma Thyfault.
Mrs. Rome is survived by three sons and their
wives, Gary L. and Deanna Rome of Pagosa Springs, Gaylon L. and Susie Rome of
Alma, Neb., and Rick I. and Nancy Rome of Irving, Texas; and a daughter and her
husband, Karen and Gary Ginther of Goodland, Kan.; nine grandchildren and 14
great-grandchildren. She is also survive by her sisters, Mrs. Stella Shelton of
Hill City, Mrs. Edmae LaBarge of Damar, and Mrs. Lorene House of Bogue.
A
Christian Wake Service was held for Mrs. Rome on March 31 at Spencer Chapel of
Hill City, Kan. The funeral was held at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church
in Hill City on April 1, with Fathers Donald McCarthy and Bill Kilian conducting
the service.
Burial was at Wildhorse Township Cemetery in Bogue.

Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Sunset Cemetery in Manhattan
for Evelyn Mae Springer, 76, Stockton, formerly of Manhattan, who died Saturday,
March 18, 2000, at home. She was born Nov. 2, 1923, in Riley, to Leonard
Ellsworth and Katherine Rose Baer Pierce. She was a bookkeeper. She had served
on the boards of the Stockton Library, Valley View Housing Authority and United
Fund, all in Stockton. She was a member of Zeta Mu Eta sorority and PEO
Sisterhood. She married Charles E. Springer on Sept. 4, 1945, in Pine Bluff,
Ark. He died April 14, 1980. A son, Douglas Springer, also preceded her in
death.
Survivors include daughters, Jacalyn Roy and Maralyn Cooper, both in
Stockton; a sister, Velma Pierce, San Diego; and two grandchildren.
Earlier
services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Smith-Moore- Overlease Funeral Home in
Stockton. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Times Raymond Lee Scott
Raymond Lee Scott, 72, of Hill City, passed away on
Thursday, March 9, 2000, at the Trego County Lemke memorial Hospital in
WaKeeney. He was born on July 13, 1927 in rural Graham County, Kansas, the son
of Floyd Albert and Gladys Marie (BALDWIN) SCOTT. A lifetime resident of the
area and a farmer, Raymond married Melva Maxine HUNTER on December 31, 1947 in
Hill City. She died on February 14, 1988. Raymond was also preceded in death by
his parents; his wife; by a daughter, Linda Sue SCOTT; and by a brother, Lloyd
SCOTT.
Survivors include; four sons, James Earl SCOTT of Hill City, Roger
SCOTT of Arapahoe, Nebraska, Ron SCOTT of Oberlin, and Mike SCOTT of Hill City;
three daughters, Barbara SCOTT, Dorothy SCOTT and Gail MARTIN, all of Arapahoe,
Nebraska; two brothers, Ralph SCOTT of Plainville and Dr. Duane SCOTT of
Belleville; two sisters, Donna CLARKE of LaSalle, Colorado and Sally REIDEL of
Overland Park, Kansas; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 13, 2000 at Spencer
Chapel in Hill City. Officiating was Pastor Mehl Cruit, and burial was in the
Hill City Cemetery, Hill City. Memorials were suggested to the Graham County
Hospital, Hill City.

GIRARD -- Blanche M. McGhghy, 79, of Girard, died at 9:04 p.m.
Thursday, March 9, 2000, at St. John's Regional Medical Center at Joplin, Mo.
She was born Jan. 31, 1921, near Englevale, to Robert and Myrtle Underwood
Zornes. She attended Englevale area schools. She moved to Woodston in 1946. She
married Dean McGhghy on Dec. 29, 1946, at Woodston. The couple moved to
Clarinda, Iowa, in 1954, and to Girard in 1980. She was a member of Calvary
Bible Church.
Survivors include her husband of the home; a son, Gary McGhghy
of Diamond, Mo.; a daughter, Iris Elliott of Girard; a brother, James Zornes of
Fort Scott; two sisters, Ethel Laster of Topeka and Annie Keeney of St. Louis;
four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death
by a son, Larry McGhghy on Nov. 18, 1999. She also was preceded in death by two
brothers and two sisters.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the
Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, Girard, with the Rev. Bill Kious officiating.
Burial will be in the Girard Cemetery. Friends may call after 6 p.m. today at
the funeral home, where friends also may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Gladys E. Stone, 85, formerly of Pampa, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, in
Oceanside, Calif.

Funeral Directors Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Todd Dyess, pastor of First
United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Mrs. Stone was born in Palco, Kan. She lived in Phillips from 1935 to 1939, when
she moved to Pampa. She had lived in Oceanside since 1994. She was a homemaker
and a member of First United Methodist Church and the Clara Hill Sunday school
class. She also was a member and past president of Pampa Home Demonstration
Club. She married Hubert M. Stone in 1935 in Oklahoma. He died in 1993.
Survivors include a daughter, Katheryn C. Griffin of Oceanside; two sons, Marion
F. Stone of Jacksonville, N.C., and Rowland D. Stone of Oceanside; a sister,
Nellie Baldwin of Holdenville, Okla.; four grandchildren; and eight great
grandchildren.

Charles Dennis Towns, 85, a retired Westcon Products Quality Control Supervisor,
died on Thursday, January 13, 2000. A Wichita resident, he was formerly from
Palco.
His funeral services were held on Monday, January 17, 2000, at
Resthaven Mortuary Chapel.
Survivors include the wife, Mary; a son, Paul of
Wichita; two daughters, Sharon MYERS-PORTER, and husband, Lee, of Wichita, and
Deborah KETCHERSIDE and husband, Harold, of Wichita; stepsons, J. D. IRWIN and
wife, Sherry, of Wichita, and Terry IRWIN and wife, Rosamond, of Wichita; and a
step-daughter, Denita MILLER, and husband Mark, of California, Missouri. Also
surviving are two brothers, Ronald TOWNS of Mission, Texas, and Lawrence TOWNS
of Wichita; three sisters, Mildred ABT of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Helen ADAMS and
Jeannie OWINGS, both of Wichita; five grandchildren; and nine
great-grandchildren.
A memorial has been established with Westview Baptist
Church.

James Oscar "Jamie" Gordon, 49, died Wednesday, February 2, 2000, as a result of
a one-vehicle accident north of Ellis, Kansas. A Palco resident, Jamie was born
June 1, 1950 in Rose Bud, Arkansas. His birth parents were Benjamin Franklin and
Disie (MALLONEE) McCARROLL; and he was lovingly adopted into the home of James
Laverne and Carolyn (BROWN) GORDON, when he was eight years of age. A longtime
area resident, he was a Pizza Hut manager and a member of the Red Line Church of
God.
Jamie was preceded in death by his birth father, Benjamin Franklin
McCARROLL; his brother, Robert McCARROLL; and his grandparents, Marvin and Elsie
GORDON, Ellen GRINDLE, and Carrie MALLONEE.
Survivors include two sons,
Justin and David, Newark, Delaware; a daughter, Jennifer GORDON, Philadelphia;
his father, James GORDON, and wife, Shirley, Wakeeney; his mother, Carolyn
GRINDLE, and husband, Max, Bogue; his birth mother, Disie McCARROLL, in
Arkansas; his grandparents, Oscar and Alberta BROWN of Mesa, Arizona; three
brothers, Philip and Richard McCARROLL, Rose Bud, Arkansas, and David GORDON,
Mulvane; a step-brother, Terry GRINDLE, Hill City; five sisters, Brenda HENSLEY,
Kingston, Missouri, Rhonda ERDMAN, Morrison, Colorado, Helen ARNOLD of Bates
City, Missouri, and Pat DOWIS and Barbara COLE, both of Palco; and a
step-sister, Susan ROME of Hays. Also surviving are twelve nephews, fifteen
nieces, two great-nieces, and three great-nephews.
Funeral services were held
at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 5, 2000 at the Red Line Church of God in
rural Palco, Kansas. Officiating were Rev. Dwite Brown, Rev. Paul Ninemire, and
Leroy Walz. Burial was in the Morlan Township Cemetery, rural Palco; and
memorials were suggested to the Red Line Church of God. Arrangements were by
Spencer Chapel of Hill City.

Eichman
Funeral services for Herman EICHMAN, age 79, of Palco, were at 10:00
a.m. on Tuesday, February 1, 2000, at the Moore-Overlease Funeral Chapel in
Plainville with Reverend Randy HARRELL officiating. Mr. EICHMAN passed away
Saturday, January 29, 2000 at the Hays Medical Center, St. Anthony Campus, in
Hays, Kansas. He was born August 7, 1920 in Damar, Kansas,, the son of Fred and
Ethel (HEDGE) EICHMAN. He was a graduate of Palco High School and attended Ft.
Hays State University. Mr. EICHMAN was a pumper for OKMAR Oil Company for many
years, retiring in 1985. He was a W.W.II Army veteran. Mr. EICHMAN was a member
of the American Legion in Hill City, the VFW in Plainville, and a lifelong
member of the 12th Armored Division. On August 6, 1950, he married Alberta
ACHESON in WaKeeney. She passed away September 14, 1974. Other survivors include
two daughters, Joyce EICHMAN of Plainville and Linda HOLLIDAY of Hays; two sons,
Harold EICHMAN of Speed and Ivan EICHMAN of Palco; two brothers, Cleo EICHMAN of
Palco and Clarence EICHMAN of Damar; sisters, Lila BALDWIN of Zurich, Ellenora
MEYER of Palco, Betty Jean Kay of Beaverton, Oregon; four grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Virgil and
Lawrence EICHMAN; and two sisters, Iola EICHMAN and Beulah TURNER; and a
great-grandchild.
Burial was in the Pleasant View Cemetery, rural Palco, with
arrangements by Moore-Overlease Funeral Chapel. Memorial contributions may be
made to the American Diabetes Association or to the Rooks County Nursing Home in
Plainville and may be sent in care of the chapel.

Blackwell — James Burton Sears, resident
of Blackwell, died Monday evening, Jan. 17, 2000, in the Veterans Administration
Hospital in Wichita, Kan. He was 66.
A graveside service is scheduled for 2
p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at the Mount Olive Cemetery in Nardin with the
Rev. Rick Longcrier of the First Baptist Church of Blackwell officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of Roberts and Son Funeral Home.
James
Burton Sears was born May 12, 1933, in Deer Creek, the son of James Verle and
Freda May (Bruce) Sears. He grew up in Chase, Hoisington and Palco, Kan., and
attended school in all three communities. Following his schooling, he drove a
truck in the oil field. He then entered the United States Army, where he served
during the Korean War. Following his discharge, he returned to the oil fields
near Liberal, Kan. He traveled the country extensively before moving to
Blackwell in 1978. While in Blackwell, he worked in lawn maintenance. He was a
member of the American Legion and VFW.
Survivors include two daughters,
Louise Sears of Valley Center, Kan., and Wanda Sears of Wichita, Kan.; one son,
Oad Sears of Stafford, Kan.; two sisters, Muriel Louise Mader of Ponca City and
Viola May Leaman of Independence, Mo.; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Glenn "Moon" COKELEY, 72, of Hill City passed away Thursday, December 30, 1999
at the Graham County Hospital in Hill City. He was born December 16, 1927 at
Gridley, Kansas, the son of Clarence Nelson ad Hazel Irene (POVENMIRE) COKELEY,
Sr.
Moon was a heavy equipment operator and a longtime Hill City resident. He
married Pearl Walters HUGHLEY on May 2, 1963. She died on March 4, 1992. Mr.
COKELEY was also preceded in death by his father; his wife; one sister; one
brother; his step-son-in-law; and one step-grandson.
He is survived by his
mother, Hazel I. COKELEY of Palco, Kansas, a step-daughter, Joan HUTTON of Hill
City; two brothers, Clarence "Nut" COKELEY, Jr. of Liberal and Ronald COKELEY of
Hill City; three sisters Illa BALTHAZOR, Palco, Charlene MCBRIDE of Austin,
Texas, and Jo Ann PHILLIPS of WaKeeney; seven step-grandchildren and a host of
step-great- and great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at
11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 4, 2000 at Spencer Chapel of Hill City with
Howard Guidry officiating. Burial was in Pleasant View Cemetery, Palco; and
memorials were suggested to the Graham County Hospital.

SALINA Jim R. Hutchcraft, 50, former
Plainville resident, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, at the Salina Regional
Medical Center.
He was born June 22, 1949, in Beloit to William “Bill” and
Mildred (Kremmer) Hutchcraft. He graduated from Plainville High School in 1967
and attended Kansas Wesleyan.
He married Jenny Andrla on Aug. 22, 1971, in
Plainville. He was a production supervisor for Exide Battery. He was a member of
the Plainville United Methodist Church, past member of the Lyons Club,
Brookville, past El-Saline school board member in Brookville, past Salina Jaycee
member, and past Brookville city council member.
Survivors include his wife,
of the home a son, Scott Roger Hutchcraft, of the home a daughter, Cynthia Lynn
Hutchcraft, Manhattan his parents, Salina and a sister, Patricia Meyers,
Plainville.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church,
Plainville, with the Gene McIntosh and Mugler officiating burial in the
Plainville Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, from
9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday at the Moore-Overlease
Funeral Chapel, Plainville, and from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the Jim R. Hutchcraft Memorial Fund.
