STOCKTON - Alma H. Forbes, 89, died Monday, Dec.
30, 2002, at Solomon Valley Manor. She was born Feb. 2, 1913, to Hiram and Cloie
(Jacobs) Look. She attended rural elementary schools in Rooks County and
graduated from Stockton High School in 1931. She then attended the Kansas State
Teachers College, Hays, where she obtained an elementary teaching certificate.
She married Robert D. Forbes on April 22, 1959. She taught several years in
rural one-room schools, in Woodston primary grades (article cut off at this

PLAINVILLE - Minnie E. Marcotte, 90, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at
Plainville Rural Hospital. She was born April 13, 1912, in Rooks County to
Charles and Aurora F. (Thibault) Sparks. She graduated from the eighth grade and
received her general education degree in 1970. She married David Long in 1932.
He died in 1934. She later married Fred Marcotte on March 4, 1937, They lived in
Zurich until 1952 when they moved to Plainville. He died in 1963.
She was a

MANITO, Ill. - Rosalee Bedore, 97,
formerly of Stockton, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at Heritage Manor Nursing
Home, Springfield, Ill. She was born Nov. 1, 1905, in Webster to George and Mary
(White) Greenwood. She married Joseph Bedore on Oct. 31, 1922, in Zurich. He
died Sept. 25, 1981. She worked at the Rooks County Courthouse for 27 years
before retiring in 1967. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic
Church, Altar and Rosary Society, Manito, and American Legion(article cut off at

Parish vigil service for Rex K. Megaffin, 32, of Plainville and formerly of
Osborne, will be 7:30 p.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Plainville,
with the Rev. Joseph Popelka officiating. Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at
Faith Lutheran Church, Osborne, with the Revs. Popelka and Ron Yarnell
officiating. Cremation is planned, with interment in Osborne Cemetery.
Mr.
Megaffin died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at his home in Plainville. He was born
Oct. 2, 1970, at Osborne, the son of and Mildred Pottberg Megaffin. He graduated
from Osborne High School in 1989 and attended Fort Hays State University. Mr.
Megaffin was an assistant basketball coach for Osborne High School for two years
and later coached his sons' baseball league in Plainville. He had farmed with
his father in Osborne until accepting the position of purchasing agent for
Wilkens Manufacturing in Stockton. An avid sports enthusiast, he enjoyed
golfing, baseball, football and basketball, especially the Kansas City Chiefs
and Kansas State University. On Jan. 8, 1994, he married Lisa Wilkens at
Osborne. She survives. He also is survived by his sons, Kade Scott, Max Thomas
and Trae Kelly Megaffin, all of the home his parents of Osborne a brother,
Terry, Atwood two sisters, Cheryl Schmale, Garden City, and Jodi Cockerham,
Osborne his grandfather and step grandmother, Kenneth and Mary Pottberg and nine
nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two grandmothers and one
grandfather.
Friends may sign the memorial book from 1 to 6 p.m. Friday at
Moore-Overlease Funeral Chapel in Plainville. Memorials are suggested to an
education fund for his sons, in care of the funeral chapel, 409 S. Cochran,
Plainville, KS 67663.

Cummings
Funeral services for Ava Cummings, 79, Baldwin City, will be
Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Ives Chapel United Methodist Church, Baldwin City.
Mrs. Cummings died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at the University of Kansas Medical
Center, Kansas City.
She was born Feb. 3, 1923, at Banner, the daughter of
Ralph and Yuba (Flynn) Wildes. She attended school at Banner and graduated from
Wakeeney High School in 1941. She attended Fort Hays State University, Hays. She
worked at a car dealership in Atchinson, where she met her husband. She married
David Myron Cummings May 3, 1947, in Colorado Springs, Colo. He died in 1974.
She and her husband lived in Denver, Colo., before moving to a farm near Baldwin
City in the 1950s. They later moved to town. She was a secretary for the
maintenance department at Baker University. She was clerk for Baldwin City. In
1996, she retired as a secretary from the Baker football department. She moved
to Orchard Lane Apartments in 1999.
Survivors include one daughter, Mylinda
Wilhite and her husband, Tom, Baldwin City; one brother, Loren Wildes,
Manhattan; one sister, Loree Acheson, Palco; five grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and
one sister, Rosalie Smith.
Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery, Baldwin City,
following the ceremony. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Ives Chapel UMC or

PLAINVILLE - Goldie E. Lowry, 91, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002,
in Webster. She was born Sept. 5, 1911, in rural Webster to Perry Jr. and Rosa
(Veverka) Bray. She married Roy Webster Lowry on March 9, 1929, in Webster. He
died Feb. 16, 1984. She was a homemaker and a community 4-H leader for the 4-W
Club, Webster. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and later
attended the Assembly of God Church of Webster.
Survivors include a son,

Lanoue. She graduated from high school in Aurora. She married Adrian J. Brin on
May 5, 1931 in Aurora. He died Oct. 11, 1992. She was a homemaker, a member of
St. Joseph Catholic Church and St. Ann Altar Society, both in Damar. She was a
member of Our Lady of Fatima Rosary Making Guild, Houston, Texas, and was

DAMAR - Irene D. Morin, 97, died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, at
Hospice House, Ames, Iowa. She was born Oct. 21, 1905, in Damar to George and
Alice (Simoneau) Roberts. She married William Edward Morin on June 10, 1929, in
Damar. He died Feb. 23, 1979. She was a homemaker and lifetime area resident.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Ladies of St. Ann Sodality,
Christian Helpers, American Legion Auxiliary and Palco Senior Citizens Group.
She was a 4-H leader.

CORINNE - LeRoy
Luckey, 89, passed away at the Brigham City Nursing Home on Tuesday, November
12, 2002. He was born May 1, 1913 in Woodston, Kansas. He was the first child of
Merton Sylvester Luckey and Blanche Geneva Swanger. Alvin married Pauline Jensen
March 8, 1965, later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple. He graduated from high
school in Sandpoint, Idaho. He operated a used furniture, seed feed and fuel
business in Newport, Washington. He moved to Utah in 1962. He worked for Sunset
Sporting Goods and after working 17 years at Ogden Defense Depot retired . He
was a High Priest in the Corinne 1st Ward. Alvin, with his wife were priesthood
coordinators for the Cache Valley Group of the LDS Sociables. He served a
genealogy mission, doing Danish name extractions. He belonged to Lions Club and
served a term as President He started a aluminum recycling business. He worked
in the Christmas trees business, for 20 years, from planting too selling. He
loved working and associating with people in the retail business.
He is
survived by his wife, of Corinne one son, Harold Luckey, Garland daughter,
Peelfrey, Moulton, Alabama previous wife, Madelyn Hansen, Priest River, Idaho
steps sons, Jensen, Corinne Dick Jensen, Evanston, Wyoming Jay R. Jensen,
Plymouth step daughter, Barbara Rushton, Hailey, Idaho 28 grandchildren 22 great
grandchildren brothers, Everette Luckey, Colin, Idaho and Lee Luckey, Spokane,
Washington Luckey, Medical Lake, Washington Harvey Luckey, Puyallup, Washington
one sister, Dora Stewart, West Glacier, Montana.
He was preceded in death by
one brother, LaVon Luckey, two sisters, Jenneieve Bowlby and Lousie Bair and one
step son, Jensen.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 15, 2002
at 11:00 a.m. at the Corinne 1st Ward Chapel, 2335 North 4000 West.
Friends
may call on Thursday, November 14, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Gillies Funeral
Chapel, 634 East 200 South, Brigham City, and on Friday from 10:00 to 10:40 a.m.

97, former Zurich resident, died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, at Hays Medical
Center.
She was born June 12, 1905, in Damar, Kansas, to Fred and Amanda
(Mongeau) Burton.
She married Sylvio Thyfault on Jan. 20, 1925, in Zurich,
Kansas. He died Oct. 25, 1975. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Ann
Catholic Church and St. Ann Sodality, both of Zurich.
Survivors include a
son, Kenneth, Hays two daughters, Norma Ferland, Hays, and Twila VanLeeuwen, Hot
Springs Village, Ark. 13 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren two step
great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in
death by three brothers, Burton, Lawrence Burton and Burton.
Services will be
at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Ann Catholic Church, Zurich, with Father David Metz
officiating burial in the church cemetery.
A parish vigil service will be at
7 p.m. today at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 20th and Pine. Visitation
will be from 4 to 7 pm. today at the funeral home and from 12:15 to 1 p.m.
Friday at the church.

Cemetery. Mrs. Baldwin died Oct. 30, 2002, at Oklahoma City. She was born June
18, 1917, at Woodston, Kan., to Leonard Franklin and Clara Constance Coan True.
She graduated from "My Ladies Beauty School" in 1959 and opened Nell's Beauty
Shop at Holdenville that same year. It was open for 43 years. She was a member
of Capital Heights Missionary Baptist Church for 63 years. She was preceded in
death by her husband, Vance Lee Kibby, and a son, Elmer Lee Kibby. Survivors
include a son, Billy Jack Kibby, Holdenville; two stepsons, John Michael Baldwin
and Tommy Baldwin, Eufaula; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She married Dr. William H. Young on Oct. 1, 1959, in Oak Grove. She and her
husband started their chiropractic practice in Plainville in May 1966 and
retired in June 1994. She was preceded in death by her husband, William, on
November 27, 1994 her parents one nephew and one niece.
Her survivors include
a brother, Kenneth Bondurant, Sonora, Calif.
Graveside services will be 2
p.m. Tuesday at the Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m.
Saturday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, and from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the

She married Marion Lumpkins on Feb. 14, 1934, in Stockton, Kansas. He died Oct.
22, 1998. She was a lifetime member of the Plainville Christian Church.
Survivors include a son, Bill Plainville, KS two daughters, Marilyn Gibson
Arvada, Colo., and Taylor, Heizer 14 grandchildren 35 great-grandchildren and
six great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter,

Burton, 59, former Damar resident, died Monday, Oct. 14, 2002 at Penrose
Hospital.
He was born July 21, 1943, in Damar, Kansas to Fremont and
Priscilla (Newell) Burton. He was a U. S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He
was a painter and was a member of the Catholic Church.
Survivors include his
mother, Priscilla Newell Burton Emigh, Hays and by four brothers, Lester,
Salina, Albert, Hill City, Raymond Colorado Springs, and Martin Burton, Bird
City. He was preceded in death by his father.
Services will be at 2 p.m.
Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Damar, with Fathers Don McCarthy and
Kilian officiating burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, Damar, Kansas.
There will
be a rosary at 1 p.m. Friday at the church in Damar. Brock's North Hill Chapel,

life-member of the Stockton Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Arnold "Gene"
Schoene, 66, of Belfair died Sept. 9, 2002, at Madigan Army Hospital in Tacoma.
He was born July 24, 1936, in Burns, Wyo., to Arnold J. and Lena Pearl (Ramsey)
Schoene. He attended high school in Burns and in Carpenter, Wyo. He married
Twila June Helms on March 9, 1957, in Scotts Bluff, Neb. Mr. Schoene served in
the Navy from 1954 until his retirement in 1974, achieving the rank of cook
second class. He was awarded medals for service in China, Korea and Vietnam. He
went on to work another 20 years as a security guard at the Naval Supply Center
in Bremerton. He retired in 1999. Mr. Schoene enjoyed many outdoor activities,
especially fishing and hunting. Reading also was a favorite pastime.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Michael Gene Schoene of Idaho Falls, Idaho; a
daughter, Melinda "Mindy" Schoene of Belfair; a brother, Charles "Pete" Schoene
of Calloway, Neb.; a sister, Gladys Ann Taylor of Plainville, Kan.; and three
grandchildren, Michael Jr. of Idaho Falls and Daniel and Jeremiah, both of
Belfair.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Elmer Ray and David L.
Schoene.
A memorial service and potluck will be at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at
Eagles 4226, 80 NE Alder Creek Lane in Belfair. A military honors ceremony
follows there at 5:30 p.m.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of the
donor's choice.

HAYS - Betty Jane Schlegel, 78, died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, at
Hays Medical Center. She was born March 16, 1924, in Zurich to Ted R. and Mable
(Veverka) McCauley. She married Roland W. "Rollie" Schlegel on Aug. 23, 1947, in
Albert. She was a homemaker, a school teacher in Ellis and Rush counties for
eight years and the executive director of the Ellis County Chapter of the
American Red Cross for 25 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist

SELDEN -- Leslie Leroy Paulson, 77, died Saturday (Sept.
7, 2002) at the Sheridan County Hospital in Hoxie, Kan. He was born Jan. 30,
1925, to Arvig and Mary (Jones) Paulson in Yuma, Kan. He graduated from Woodston
High School in Woodston, Kan.
He served in the U.S. Army. On Nov. 21, 1948,
he married Melvia Deane Mischler in Iola, Kan. He worked as a railroad depot
agent.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Lars Arvig
Paulson; and one sister, Pearl Musgrove.
Survivors include his wife, Melvia
of Selden; one son, John Paulson of Lawrence, Kan.; two daughters, Karla and
husband, Art Wessel and Leslie Lavinia Paulson all of Selden; two brothers,
Clifford Paulson of Goodland, Kan. and John Paulson and wife, Lorriane of
Wichita Falls, Texas; one sister-in-law, Viola Paulson of Woodston, Kan.; six
grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be
Wednesday, 10:30 a.m., at Pauls Funeral Home in Selden with the Rev. Gene Dollar
officiating. Interment will be in the Survery Cemetery in rural Woodston at 3:30
p.m.
Visitation is Tuesday from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. and Wednesday from 8 a.m. until
service time at the funeral home.

NATOMA — Pfortmiller, 67, of Natoma, died Aug. 29, 2002, at Plainville Rural
Hospital, Plainville.
Services will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at Peace Lutheran
Church with burial in Peace Lutheran Cemetery. The Rev. Scott Watford will
officiate.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 2
p.m. Sunday at Pohlman’s Mortuary and at the church beginning an hour before the
service.

Pfortmiller was born Aug. 21, 1935, at Natoma, to
Gustava and Josephine (Hackerott) Blank. She lived in the Natoma community all
her life and graduated from Natoma High School. On Sept. 21, 1952, she married
Orville Pfortmiller at Natoma. She helped with the family’s farming operation
and was a member of Peace Lutheran Church.
Survivors include her husband,
Orville Pfortmiller, Natoma two sons, Ricky Pfortmiller, Otterbein, Ind., and
Pfortmiller, Stafford two daughters, Becky Mangus, Winfield, and Terri Rather,

Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002, at the Solomon Valley Manor.
She was born June 28,
1917, in rural Rooks County, Kansas, to Harvey and Amanda Hariett (Huff) Butler.
She married Ernest E. Fry on June 10, 1936, in Stockton. He died June 13, 1984.
She had been a lifetime Rooks and Osborne county resident. She was an 11-year
member of Senior Companions, a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies
Auxiliary, the Valley Club, the Blue Mound Club and the Assembly of God Church
of Stockton.
Survivors include a son, Harvey Joseph Woodston two daughters,
Edna Mae Stithem and Kee, both of Stockton two brothers, Butler, Beloit, and
Bacil Butler, Ordway, Colo. 11 grandchildren 19 great-grandchildren and five
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by five brothers and a
sister.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Smith-Moore-Overlease Funeral

in Monroe, Mich.
She was born March 12, 19 49, in Stockton to William C. and
Elsie M. (Bowen) Hackerott. She was a Stockton High School graduate.
She
married John David Kuder in May 1970 in Plainville, Kansas. He died Dec. 3,
1973. She was a member of First Southern Baptist Church of Plainville and
Baseline Baptist Church, Mesa.
Survivors include two sons, Paul, McGuire Air
Force Base, N. J., and Tim, Monroe, Mich. a brother, Gene Hackerott, Weskan and
five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by an infant sister.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Stockton United Methodist Church with
the Rev. Troy Buss officiating burial in Stockton Cemetery.
Visitation will
be until 8 p.m. today at Smith-Moore-Overlease Funeral Home, Stockton, and from
9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the church. There will be a praise service at 7 p.m.
today at First Southern Baptist Church, Plainville.

STOCKTON KS Zelma Beatrice Strutt, 86, died Friday, Aug. 9,
2002, at her home.
She was born Feb. 20, 1916, in Rooks County, Kansas to
William A. and Lena L. (Casper) Schilowsky. She attended Pleasant Plains and Jay
schools south of Woodston.
She married Max F. Strutt on May 22, 1941, in
Smith Center. He died April 21, 1999. They lived on a farm west of Natoma, then
moved north of Natoma. She farmed with her husband until moving to Woodston in
1973. She later moved to Valley View Apartments, Stockton.
Survivors include
two daughters, Kathleen Campbell and Hance, both of Stockton seven grandchildren
a step grandson 14 great-grandchildren six step great-grandchildren and a step
great-great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, and Elik
Schilowsky, and a great-granddaughter.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at
Smith-Moore-Overlease Funeral Home with the Rev. Lyle Miller officiating burial
in Pleasant Plains Cemetery, rural Woodston.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8
p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the
funeral home.

Howard Stanley Shepard, 86,
former Plainville, Kansas resident, died Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, at Hays Good
Samaritan Center.
He was born Sept. 4, 1915, on a farm south of Plainville to
David J. and Nancy Jane (Mapes) Shepard. He graduated from Plainville High
School in 1933. He attended Grand Island Business College. He was a U. S. Army
veteran of World War II.
He married Ruby Bayuk on March 21, 1950. She died in
1991. They lived in the Chicago area for many years. He worked at Jewell T and
U. S. Rubber until retirement. They moved to Wisconsin Dells, Wis., then to
Kansas.
Survivors include a brother, Plainville a sister, Norva Jean Wyrill,
Kirwin and a special friend, Florence Valenta.
He was preceded in death by a
sister, Margaret Cain.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Moore-Overlease
Funeral Chapel, Plainville, with the Rev. Gene McIntosh officiating burial in
Plainville Cemetery.

She was born Sept. 9, 1931, to Jess and

She married John W. Sanders Jr. in June of 1951, in
Stockton. She was a dental technician and a member of the Kansas Archeological
Association.
Survivors include two sons, Stockton, and Rick, Bellevue, Neb.
and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Smith-Moore-Overlease Funeral Home,

PLAINVILLE KS Donald G. Vohs, 78, died Sunday, July 28, 2002, at Hays
Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.
He was born Aug. 26, 1923, near Plainville KS
to and Anna (Gribel) Vohs. He graduated from Plainville High School and attended
Kansas State University before entering the U. S. Navy.
He married Florence
Ann “Flossie” Ruhaak on Aug. 11, 1952, in Plainville. He was a lifetime farmer
in the Plainville area, retired construction worker and employee of Midland
Marketing Cooperative. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Knights
of Columbus and Veterans of Foreign Wars, all in Plainville.
Survivors
include his wife, of the home four sons, Leonard, Florence, Mont., Larry,
Plainville, Michael, Hays, and John, Las Vegas three daughters, Ann Smith, Hays,
Donna Magwire, Sharon Springs, and Michelle Dougherty, Plainville five brothers,
Bernard, Smith Center, Raymond, Osborne, Ralph, Lyons, Leanard, Stockton, and
Westminster, Colo. two sisters, Betty Lala, Kirwin, and Orr, Gaylord 15
grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a
grandson.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic
Church, Plainville, with Father Joseph Popelka officiating burial in the church
cemetery with military honors by the VFW.
A ladies guild rosary will be at 3
p.m. Wednesday at Moore-Overlease Funeral Chapel, Plainville. A parish vigil
followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the
chapel. Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

She married Lawrence W. Saindon on
Nov. 16, 1937, in Zurich. He died June 28, 1997. She was a homemaker and member
of St. Ann Catholic Church and St. Ann Sodality, both of Zurich.
Survivors
include three sons, LeRoy, Great Bend, Robert Tescott, and Melvin, Zurich three
daughters, Virginia Hull, El Dorado, and Bonita Shubert and Susan Maddox, both

Newell on April 19, 1955, in Zurich, Kansas. He died Nov. 24, 1982. She was a
homemaker and bank teller. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic
Church, Hill City, Kansas.
Survivors include her mother, Hill City two sons,
Terry, Seneca, and Don Hill City three daughters, Donna Worcester, Christian
Nickelson and Pauline Keiswetter, all of Hill City two brothers, Bartos, Zurich,
and Dale Bartos, Logan, Utah special friend, Paul Utterback Arapahoe, Neb. and
eight grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father and an infant
child.

was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II, awarded the Purple Heart.
He
married Patricia Jean Parker on Aug. 30, 1947, in Stockton, KS. She died April
30, 1983. He was a retired employee of the grain elevator in Speed. He was a
member of Phillipsburg Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include three

79, died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at his home. He was born Sept. 5, 1922, in
Graham County, to Frank and Rosa (Morin) Balthazor. He graduated from Palco High
School and earned a bachelor's degree in industrial arts from Fort Hays State
University. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World War II from 1943 to
1947 receiving the Purple Heart in Italy. He married Georgia Silvas on April 26,

memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, at Grace and St. Stephens
Episcopal Church, Colorado Springs, Colo., for Orvis I. Grout, a founder of the
melodrama at the Strater Hotel, who died Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at his home in
Colorado Springs, Colo. He was 90. Mr. Grout was born May 12, 1912, in
Plainville, Kan. In 1934 he received his undergraduate and in 1936 his master’s
degree from Fort Hays State University, where he taught English and theater arts
from 1937 to 1943. Mr. Grout married Berniece Meyer on Aug. 10, 1932. In 1943,
he was inducted into the Army. He was stationed at Fitzsimmons General Hospital
near Denver, where he worked in psychotherapy using a treatment called
psychodrama. He also directed plays for the Seventh Army Service Command. After
his discharge in 1946, he was the resident director for the Colorado Springs
Civic Theater, where he worked until his retirement in 1979. From 1950 through
1961, Mr. Grout directed summer melodrama for the Imperial Players at the
Imperial Hotel in Cripple Creek, Colo. Then, in 1962, he and several other
investors opened the Diamond Circle Theater at the Strater Hotel in Durango. He
directed summer melodrama there through 1988. Mr. Grout also directed at various
times for the San Diego Theater, Southport Theater in New Orleans, and the Rocky
Mountain Theatrical Association in Colorado Springs. He also taught at Colorado
College.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 1966.
He is survived by
nephews Wesley Grout of Woodland Park, Colo., James Grout and Don Gerboth, both
of Sun City West, Ariz., Dale Gerboth of Enumclaw, Wash.; four great-nephews;
and seven great-nieces.

Stockton public schools and Florida State University. On Sept. 27, 1941, she
married Max F. Schmitz at Osborne. They made their home in Stockton, Oakley,
Russell and Plainville before moving to Norton in 1961. She worked as a food
service supervisor. Mrs. Schmitz was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic
Church and the Altar Society and had belonged to the St. Thomas Altar Society in
Stockton and Sacred Heart Altar Society in Plainville. She was a member of the
American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary and the Kansas Food Supervisors
Association. She enjoyed reading, yarnworks, dancing, puzzles and singing..
In addition to her husband, of the home in Norton, she is survived by four
daughters, Kay Smith, Hays, Dr. Beverly Schmitz-Glass, Garden City, Denise
Schmitz and Betty Schmitz Rossouw, both of Norton a half sister, Evelyn Corella,
Redding, Calif. three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was
preceded in death by her parents a son, Michael Timothy Schmitz and three half
brothers, Willard Davis, Lyle Yowe and Ronald Yowe.

Leonard W. Brokaw, 75, of
Bowie, TX passed away on April 19, 2002 in Bowie Memorial Hospital. Brokaw was
born on June 17, 1926 in Rook County Stockton, KS. He worked for the U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers as a structural engineer from 1971 until his retirement in
1985. He served in the U.S. Navy during World Ward II. Mr. Brokaw married Bobby
Jo Pigg on February 25, 1995 in Bowie, TX.
Funeral services for Mr. Brokaw
were held on Sunday, April 21, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church with
Ronnie Lawson officiating. The Committal Service was held on Monday, April 22,
2002 at Moore Memorial Gardens in Arlington, TX. Services were directed by Fry
Funeral Home of Bowie, TX.

April 14, 2002. Mrs. Nelson was born Ethel M. Lamb on June 3, 1903, in rural

assistant postmaster at Codell, retiring in 1973.
She was preceded in death
by her husband, J. Merle, in 1976 a daughter, Nelson an infant son and a

Antonio, and Genevieve Zeigler and Genette Keas both of Plainville seven

Mr. Brickley was born Nov. 24, 1920, on the North Wilson Lease
in rural Eldorado, the son of Clyde Dayton and Ethel Irene (West) Brickley. On
June 21, 1952 he married Ruth Esther Larson in Colby. She died Dec. 18, 2000. He
had been a resident of Plainville for 48 years coming from Topeka. He was a
hospital administrator and medical technologist, ASCP for the Plainville Rural
Hospital. He was a WWII veteran and was a member of the Christian Church, Lions
Club, Gideons, Senior Housing Board, all of Plainville. He was also a member of
the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and the U.S. Selective Service
Board.

77, McPherson, Kan., formerly of Grain Valley, died Wednesday, March 20, 2002,
in The Cedars Health Care Center, McPherson. Mr. Miller was born Sept. 1, 1924,
in Alton, Kan., the son of Raymond R. Miller and Huldah F. Branson Miller. He
attended Alton and Pleasant Valley Grade schools, graduating from Alton High
School. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He had lived in McPherson
since 1998, moving from Grain Valley. He had been an asphalt plant operator for
C. R. Smith and Boewen Construction companies in Blue Springs. He was a member
of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2715, McPherson, Operating Engineers Local
No. 101, Kansas City, and a former member of both the Odd Fellow Lodge and the
American Legion Post in Alton. He attended First United Methodist Church in
McPherson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his step-father, George
"Pat" Miller, a sister, Alice Coz, a brother, Chester Miller, and three
brothers-in-law, Allen Snedker, Ivan Macy and Charles Cox.
His survivors
include his wife, Marcile Pauline (Dibble) Miller, whom he married on Feb. 2,
1947; his sons, Lee A. Miller and Bradley G. Miller, both of McPherson; his
daughters, Connie K. Nichols, Little River, Kan., and Peggy A. Palmer,
Hutchinson, Kan.; his sisters, Helen Snedker and Hazel Macy, both of Hemet,
Calif., a sister-in-law, Eloise Miller, Stockton, Kan.; seven grandchildren;
three step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and five
step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday at
Glidden-Ediger Chapel in McPherson. Cremation will follow the funeral service.

Mrs. Meyers was
born Sept. 22, 1905, in Rooks County, the daughter of Clarence and Belle Hannah
(Gray) Ordway. She was a longtime Plainville resident moving from Bailey, Colo.
On May 31, 1924, she married Leo Meyers in Stockton. He passed away Sept. 27,
1997. She was the owner with her husband of a locker plant in Larned and were
later the owners of the A&W Restaurant in Abilene. They moved to Bailey and were
the owners of a restaurant and gift store where they retired in 1978 and moved
to Plainville. She was a member of Plainville Christian Church, the Order of the
Eastern Star and the Pricilla Art Club, all in Plainville.
She was preceded
in death by two brothers, Guy Ordway and Victor Ordway; two sisters, Valda Edson
and Ileta Ordway; a stepsister, Lelia Banes; and a granddaughter, Cindy Brim.
Survivors include a son, Leo Meyers Jr. and wife, Faye, of Amarillo; a
granddaughter, Michelle Gipson; and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation will
be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. today at the funeral chapel and from 11:30 a.m. to the
time of service at the church.

She grew up in Telluride, Westcliffe, Silvercliffe and Bonanza, Colo. She
married Leo R. Beckley on March 18, 1929, in Saguache, Colo. He died in 1980.
They moved to Plainville in 1938, where they lived for many years. In 1993, she

graduate of Plainville High School. He married Patricia Perry April 5, 1956, in
Great Bend. She died July 11, 1999. A resident of Stockton, coming from Great
Bend, he worked as a welder for Primus Sterilizer Company in Great Bend,
retiring in 1998. Reece was a U.S. Air Force veteran.
Survivors include one
son, Richard Eugene Reece of Moss Point, Miss.; two daughters, Colleen Gray of
Great Bend and Shawna Reece of Kansas City, Mo.; one sister, Martha Ann Reece of

his retirement. He then moved to Lincoln. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

1913-2002
ST. JOHN - The Rev. Helen Suzan
Rosenberg, 88, died Jan. 4 at Leisure Homestead at St. John. She was born June
22, 1913, at Smith Center, the daughter of John and Bertie Walters Kinyon. She
attended Kensington High School. She married the Rev.J.O. Rosenberg March 18,
1931. A resident of St. John, coming from Hill City, Woodston, Jewell, Great
Bend, Topeka, Middle Town, Ohio, and Cincinnati, Ohio, she was an ordained
minister with Assembly of God. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Harold
Rosenberg of Aurora, Colo., and the Rev. Hugh Rosenberg of Cincinnati; seven
grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren;and one great-great-grandchild. She was
preceded in death by one son, Willis Rosenberg. Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday
at Pleasant Green Assembly of God Church north of Agra. Burial will be at German
Town Cemetery north of Kensington. Memorials are suggested to Tri-County Church
Missions Project, in care of Kleppinger Funeral Home in Jewell.

WAKEENEY KS , Erma Thomas, 94, formerly
of Plainville, (Rooks County, KS) died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at the Lutheran
Home.
She was born April 24, 1907, near Zurich to John and Daisy (Pywell)
Foulke She attended country schools near Zurich. She married Leo R. “Hank”
Thomas Nov. 27, 1933, on the family farm near Zurich he died June 16, 1996. They
farmed near Zurich until retiring.
Survivors include a daughter, Heiland,
Ellis and a granddaughter. She was preceded in death by a sister, Eda Smee, a
brother, Clinton Foulke, and two half-brothers, and Delwin Mendenhall.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Moore-Overlease Funeral Chapel, Plainville,
with the Rev. Harry Cross officiating burial in Plainville Cemetery, Plainville.
Visitation is until service time at the mortuary.
Memorials are suggested to
the Lutheran Home, WaKeeney.

Francis S. St. Peter
AURORA, Colo. Francis S. St. Peter, 77 , died Tuesday,
Dec. 25, 2001, in Aurora.
Services were Dec. 29 at St. Michael the Archangel
Catholic Church, Aurora burial was in Ft. Logan National Cemetery, Denver.
He
was born May 20, 1924, to Joseph and Rosella (Benoit) St. Peter in Damar (Rooks
County, KS. He married Margaret Bedore of Stockton, KS on Feb. 4, 1947.
He
was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II. He retired from the city of Aurora as
chief electrical inspector. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign
Wars.
Survivors include his wife, of the home seven sons, Michael, Martin and
Mark, all of Aurora, Robert, LaVeta, Colo., and Gale, Lewis and all of Denver a
brother, Eugene, Damar two sisters, Roberts, Damar, and Donetta Weaver, Augusta,
Ga. 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Robert L. 'Hap' Berland,
74, 401 Milner, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at his home. He was born June 24,
1927, in Zurich to A. W. and Edna (Coupal) Berland. He graduated from Hays High
School and received a bachelor's degree from Fort Hays State University in
physical education. He was a member of Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity while at FHSU.
He was a U. S. Navy veteran during World War II. He married Doris M. Cox on May
30, 1955, in Hays. He taught school (article cut off at this point.)
