N.A. “Bill” Cates, 93,
Plainville, died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006, at Rooks County Health Center,
Plainville. He was born Jan. 17, 1913, in Sand Springs, Okla., to N.J. and
Elizabeth (Myers) Cates. He married Bertha A. Schmidt on March 31, 1948, in
Wichita Falls, Texas. He owned Plainville Boat Shop until retiring.
Survivors
include his wife, of the home; a son, N.A, “Buck” Cates, Wichita; two daughters,
Karen Rachel, Las Vegas, Mary Werner, Garland; a brother, Don Cates, Austin,
Texas; a sister, Eva Newell, Pomona, Calif.; six grandchildren; and seven
great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Moore-Overlease
Funeral Chapel, Plainville; inurnment will follow.
Visitation will be from 9
a.m. until time of service Tuesday at funeral home.

Alfred C. Arpin, 86,
Damar, died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006, at Rooks County Senior Services,
Plainville. He was born Feb. 15, 1920, in Damar to F.E. and Rosa (Newell) Arpin.
He graduated from Damar High School. He married Marcella Desmarteau on Sept. 15,
1942, in Damar. She preceded her in death on Nov. 23, 1998. He later married
Verna Simoneau on Dec. 26, 2001, in Damar. He was a farmer.
Survivors include
his wife, of the home; a son, Dale Arpin, Thorton, Colo.; two daughters, Judy
Bieker, Hays, Renee Marcotte, Plainville; a sister, Virgina Thyfault, Damar; 10
grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a
daughter, Dorothy Arpin; a son Allen Arpin.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m.
Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Damar; burial in St. Joseph Cemetery,
Damar.
Visitation will be from 9 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Moore-Overlease Funeral
Chapel, and from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. until time of service
Wednesday, both at the church.
A parish vigil service will be at 7 p.m.
Tuesday, followed by a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Rosary, both at church.

Max Stull, Plainville, formerly of Natoma, died Sunday, Dec.
17, 2006, at Rooks County Senior Services, Plainville. He was born Sept. 26,
1920, in Zurich to Harold and Wane and Sylvia Merle (Brown) Stull. He was a 1938
graduate of Palco High School. He married Alberta Marie Jennings on Sept. 26,
1941, in WaKeeney. He later married Goldie M. Gable on Dec. 30, 1976. She
preceded him in death Sept. 26, 2001. He was retired from the oilfield.
Survivors include four sons, Marshall Wane Stull, Solomon, Lary Stull, Hays,
Keith Stull, McPherson, and Joel Stull, Natoma; a daughter, Jean Tatkenhorst,
Natoma; a step-daughter, Susan Gabel; 12 grandchildren; and 20
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter.
Services
will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church, Natoma; burial in Green
Mound Cemetery near Palco.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today and from
9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m., both at

Hazel May Conger, 90, Hays, died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2006, at Hays
Medical Center. She was born May 4, 1916, in Pawnee County to George and Mollie
(Sunley) Cook. She graduated from Larned High School in 1934 and completed
studies at Salt City Business College. She continued her education in
Washington, graduating in 1945 with a bachelor's degree in commercial science
from Bejamin Franklin University. She married William Duane Conger on Aug. 16,
1962, in Colby. She worked for the experiment station in Colby.
Survivors
include her husband; and a brother, Allen Cook, Larned.
A private burial
service was at East Paradise Conger Cemetery.

Velia V. Stuchlik, 95, Hill City, died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2006, at
Dawson Place Nursing Home, Hill City. She was born Jan 12, 1911, in rural Gove
County to U.G. and Karrie Belle (Siegrist) Smith. She married Ancil Stuchlik on
Nov. 18, 1932, in Stockton. He preceded her in death Feb. 14, 1995.
Survivors
include a son, Wyman Stuchlik, Manhattan, Mont.; a daughter, Marlayne Boller,
Norton; a sister, Elsie Lott, Hill City; 10 grandchildren; and 16
great-grandchildren.

Russell DeVillier
ST. MARYS - Mr. Russell DeVillier, 83 of 803 North 8th
Street, died Tuesday, December 12th, 2006 after a short illness. He was born in
October, 1923, the son of John Davis and Alice (Dupris) "Dee Dee" DeVillier. He
attended Southwestern University in Lafayette, Louisiana prior to joining the US
Army. He served 4 years as a hospital orderly and medic during World War II. In
1946, he married Angela Agnes Haverkamp. He received a Bachelor's degree (in
1948) and a Master's degree (in 1962) in Education from Emporia State
University. Russell was a secondary school administrator and educator for over
40 years in the Kansas and Louisiana school systems. His students can be found
throughout Kansas. He was an active member of Immaculate Conception Parish in
St. Marys. Preceding him in death was a daughter, Jane Davida. He is survived by
his wife and 4 children; James Russell and wife Jodi Holman; Stephen Donald,
Eugene Benedict and wife Cheryl Fees and Lorraine Anne and husband Robert Mitch
Poell. Seven surviving grandchildren include: David Mitchell Poell, Lauren
Elizabeth Poell, Phillip James DeVillier, Paul Haver DeVillier, Stephanie Elise
DeVillier, Charles Andrew DeVillier and Catherine Ann DeVillier. Funeral
services will be on Saturday, December 16th at St. Marys Catholic Church in St.
Benedict, KS. Interment will be at the church cemetery in St. Benedict on this
day. In lieu of flowers, donations and memorial gifts in his name can be made to

Peter. He preceded her in death July 13, 1970. She later married Albert Palmberg
on Aug. 5, 1972. He preceded her in death Jan. 5, 1995. She was a homemaker,
crafter and collector. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Survivors include four sons, Gary Dinkel, Loveland, Colo., Don Dinkel and Leon
Dinkel and wife, Celeste, all of Hays, and Alan Dinkel and wife, Marlena,
Plainville; six grandchildren, Heath Dinkel, Cody Dinkel, Kayla Dinkel, Garet

She was preceded in death by her

and carpenter, and worked in lawn care.

great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sons, John L.

Groom Hockett on March 10, 2001, in Plainville. He served in the U.S. Army.

Venita Hrabe on Nov. 12, 1962, in Plainville. He served in the U.S. Army, Army
National Guard and the Army Reserves. He was employed by Southwestern Bell
Telephone for 42 years.

married Vernon M. Blakesley on June 15, 1931, in Holyoke, Colo. She was deputy
clerk of the district court in Rooks County for many years, retiring in 1977.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women,
an active Senior Companion and Hadley Hospital Auxiliary volunteer.
Survivors
include a son, Claude R. Blakesley and wife, Margaret, Hutchinson; a daughter,

Hays Medical Center. She was born Aug. 11, 1911, in Victoria to Peter and Anna
Maria (Braun) Rome. She graduated from cosmetology school in Salina and enlisted
in the U.S. Air Force, serving in England, France, Germany, Japan and several
bases in the U.S. during World War II. She retired from the service in 1963 and
received her LPN license in California. She was a licensed practical nurse until
her retirement.
Survivors include a brother, Bob Schamber; two sisters, Laura
Bauck, and Tony Campbell; a nephew, Leonard Schamber and wife, Linda; a
great-niece, Erin Hernandez; a great-nephew, John Schamber; and many other
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by seven brothers, Alex Rome,
Pete Rome, Andy Rome, Richard Schamber, Alfred Schamber, Leonard J. Schamber and

2006, at Rooks County Health Center, Plainville. He was born Sept. 18, 1914, to
Alva John and Lulu Bell (Hecox) Beck. He was a 1933 graduate of Natoma High
School. He married Reva Rigby on Sept. 12, 1937, in Lincoln. She preceded him in
death on Feb. 25, 1998.
Survivors include a son, Harold “Bud” Beck Jr.,
Russell; three daughters, Deanna Becker, Plainville, Beverly Hachmeister,
Natoma, and Anita Griffin, Alton; 10 grandchildren; two step granddaughters; and
27 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Ricky
Griffin, on Jan. 17, 2004.

in Mesa, Ariz. She was born March 22, 1947, in Damar to Lawrence and Rita (Brin)
Newell. She was a graduate of Damar High School. She married Bernard Wayne
Schmidt on June 4, 1966, in Damar. He preceded her in death Oct. 30, 1969. She
was a school cook in the Plainville school system and moved to Las Vegas in 1992
where she was a casino cashier. She moved to Mesa in 2005.
She is survived by
three sons, Brad Schmidt, Las Vegas, Brian Schmidt, Tempe, Ariz., and Bennie
Schmidt, Chandler, Ariz.; three brothers, Harold Newell, Damar, Leland Newell,
Hays, and Dale Newell, Wichita; four sisters, Albertine Garcia and Kathleen
Brown, both of Hill City, her twin, Lois Sumner, Colby, and Carmen Sims, Sedan;
her mother-in-law, Ann Schmidt, Plainville; four grandchildren, Cole and Ashley
Frimmel, and Amanda and Savannah Schmidt; and many acquaintances.
She was
preceded in death by an infant brother, Michael Newell.
Services will be at
11 a.m. Friday, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Damar; burial in Sacred Heart
Cemetery, Plainville.

University of Kansas where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She
graduated from Fort Hays State University with a degree in communication and
attended Napier University in Edinburough, Scotland, on a rotary scholarship in
human resources. She was a homemaker and member of the Presbyterian Church of
Stanley.
Survivors include her husband, Mark Flannagan; two daughters,
Caroline Grace Flannagan and Sophie Elizabeth Flannagan; parents Terry and Sandy
Rupp, Wichita; father-in-law and mother-in-law, John and Carol Flannagan,
Overland Park; grandmother, Esther Rupp, Hays; three brothers, Paul Rupp and
wife, Lara, Roeland Park, Seth Rupp and wife, Megan, Mission Woods, and John

Woodston; a brother, Elmer Merklinger, Victoria, Texas; a sister, Rita Younker,

Aurora, Colo., and Christine Thompson, O'Fallon, Mo.; two stepsons, Kevin Moten,
Topeka, and Shawn Moten, Las Vegas; a stepdaughter, Johnelle Frisby, Topeka;
four brothers, Eugene Roy, Atwood, Orville Roy, Palco, Clifford Roy, Stockton,
and Stanley Roy, Damar; three sisters, Viola Ricks, Arlington, Texas, Donna
Wiltfong, Phillipsburg, and Norma Griffin, Salina; 20 grandchildren; and four

Natoma to Gavin L. and Rebecca Pearl (Clair) Finch. She attended Craig
Elementary School. She married Irvin Miller on Dec. 24, 1936, in Hays. He
preceded her in death May 1, 1984. She later married Sylvester Urban on Feb. 2,
1990, in Hays. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, of the
home; a son, Duane Miller, Russell; two stepsons, Barry and Randy Urban, Bison;
three stepdaughters, Gloria Lange and Janice Urban, both of Hays; and Donna
Leiker, Munjor; two brothers, Lawrence Finch, Natoma, and Orval Finch,
Plainville; several grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

of Stockton, died Friday, Nov. 25, 2005, in Houston. He was born Aug. 19, 1923,
in Plainville. He was a 1943 graduate of Stockton High School. He served in the
U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Alice Louise Lightfoot in 1946. She
preceded him in death Dec. 22, 1966. He was a pipeline engineer for several
companies in the Houston area.

McFarlin, Houston, Flora Chaka, Stafford, Texas, and Janet Folino, Cochise,
Ariz.; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Julie
Christy, on Sept. 11, 2003.

graduate of Holdrege High School and a graduate of University of
Nebraska-Lincoln. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He
married Martha “Ruth” Caddy on Sept. 8, 1945, in Lincoln, Neb. She preceded him
in death May 26, 1993. He was a farmer near Loomis until his retirement in 1992.
Survivors include two sons, John W. Hanson, Lexington, Neb., and Steve Hanson,
Damar; two daughters, Marjorie Baxter and Shirley Olson, both of Holdrege; two
brothers, Earl Hanson Jr., Holdrege, and Sherrod Hanson, Loomis; three sisters,
Doris Hollinger, Omaha, Neb., Dorothy Novak, Pleasant Dale, Neb., and Gladys
Cole, Curtis, Neb.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He

Samaritan Hospital, Kearney. He was born June 12, 1931, in Quinter to John M.
and Philemena “Minnie” (Linenberger) Norton. He was a 1949 graduate of Quinter
High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He married
Phyllis Jo Dunning on Nov. 27, 1951, in Hill City. He owned and operated Jim
Norton's Tractor Service, Plainville, for over 35 years.
Survivors include
his wife, of the home; two sons, Don Norton, Plainville, and Brad Norton,
Kearney; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and five step
grandchildren.

Kenneth LeRoy
PLAINVILLE — Kenneth LeRoy passed away on March 7 at the Rooks
County Nursing Home, Plainville. He was the only son born to Ray and Anna Blanch
(Batman) LeRoy on April 22, 1932, in Great Bend. He graduated from Hudson High
School in 1950 and entered the Army shortly thereafter. He married Orpha Alice
Witt in June, 1952. He was stationed at the military bases in Fort Riley, El
Paso, Texas, and Fairbanks, Ala., and was discharged from the Army in 1956.
Kenneth lived most of his life on the family farm near Seward. He was a member
of Peace United Church of Christ in Hudson. In 1989, he suffered from a stroke
and had to leave the farm for health reasons. He resided at Cherry Village
Nursing Home, Great Bend and Rooks County Nursing Home, Plainville, until his
death.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Marian Sillin. He
leaves behind four children, Kathy Marren of Fort Collins, Colo., Mike LeRoy
(Jessie) of Saint John, Kristy Moore (Mark) of Fort Collins, Colo., and Karen
Westhusin (Fred) of Plainville. He also leaves behind a sister, Norma Fischer
(Herman, Jr.) of Seward; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many
nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are to be held at Charter Funeral Home
in Great Bend on Saturday, March 11, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Wade Russell
presiding, burial at the Great Bend cemetery with military honors provided by
Fort Riley. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, March 10, at the
funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any memorials to be given
to Rooks County Nursing Home, Plainville.

Plainville, died Monday, March 6, 2006, at Rooks County Nursing Home. He was
born May 2, 1914, in Bristow, Okla., to John O. and Constance O. (Hobbs) Pyle.
He was a graduate of Okmulgee High School, Okmulgee, Okla. He served in the U.S.
Navy during World War II. He married Mary F. Riley on June 29, 1940, in Bristow.
She preceded him in death. He worked for the Mobil Oil Corp. for 36 years, with
most of his time spent in Kansas, Oklahoma and Alaska.
Survivors include a
son, John W. Pyle, Hays; a daughter, Constance M. Conyac, Stockton; five
grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a
son, Chris “Montie” M. Pyle in 1969.

Sept. 30, 1943, in Medicine Lodge. He preceded her in death Jan. 20, 1947. She
later married Elmer Pete Bell on June 19, 1950, in Lyons. He preceded her in
death Jan. 14, 1998. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include three sons, Bill
V. Packard, Goddard, Michael G. Packard, Winfield, and Stephen W. Bell, Topeka;
two daughters, Mary K. Brehm, Pratt, and Bonnie R. Hirsh, Kinsley; two brothers,

a longtime resident of Odessa passed away Tuesday, February 21, 2006 at his
residence. He was born May 28, 1928 in Plainville, Kansas to Anthony & Mayme
Dopita. He served in the Navy from 1946 to 1948. He married Mary LaRayne
Botterman January 11, 1946 in Plainville, KS. He was a retired contract welder
with Pipeliners Union Local 798. He was a member of the V.F.W. and St. Mary’s
Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Daniel Bruce
Dopita, infant daughter, Margaret Dopita and brother, Robert Dean Dopita.
He
is survived by his wife of 60 years, LaRayne Dopita of Odessa, daughters, Leigha
Rackow & husband Eddie of Odessa, Maria Fulton & husband Sammy of Leander,

Donna Dinkel on Nov. 5, 1981, in Las Vegas. He owned Printcraft Printers since
1960 and started printing when he was 18. He was a member of St. Fidelis
Catholic Church, Victoria, and Knights of Columbus No. 1325 and American Legion,
both of Hays.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; two sons, Chris Goetz
and wife, Dana, Hays, and Mark Goetz and wife, Kelly, Broomfield, Colo.; three
daughters, Lorna Doolittle and husband, Richard, Fort Worth, Texas, Tonya Goetz,
Anchorage, Alaska, and Vanessa Goetz, Hays; a sister, Clarita Weigel-Mahoney,
Stockton; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
He was preceded in
death by two brothers, Arthur Goetz and Marvin Goetz; and three sisters, Lillian

Dorothy Fowler, age
93, of Plantation, Florida, died Monday, February 20, 2006, at her home in
Plantation. Dorothy was born April 30, 1912, in Trego County, Kansas, the
daughter of George and Dollie (German) Glass. She was married for 50 years to
Larry Fowler when he preceded her in death on November 16, 2002. Dorothy was a
remarkable lady and true friend who sacrificed and dedicated her life to her
children. Dorothy was a member of Westlawn Baptist Church in Huntsville, Ala.,
where she was a resident for 50 years.
Dorothy is survived by two sons, Fred
Fowler of Spring Lake, Mich., and Dr. Stephen C. Fowler of Lawrence, Kansas; one
daughter, Dr. Michelle S. Leonard of Plantation, Fla.; three sisters, Veda Hayes
of Lawrenceburg, Tenn., Norah Tolekes of Plainville, Kansas, and Dollie Engel of
Hays, Kansas, and seven grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her
husband, Larry Fowler, three brothers, Alfred, Roland and George; and one
sister: Wilma Hamel.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday,
February 24, at Wasinger Keithley Funeral Chapel, 400 E. 17th, Ellis, with
Pastor Lyle M. Knuth officiating..

High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Joanne
Quint on March 6, 1982, in Stockton. She preceded him in death July 18, 1996. He
was a cattle buyer and rancher.

Stockton, and George Riffel, Ness City; a daughter, Cindy McDowell, Stockton;
companion, Edith Hamilton, of the home; a sister, Caroline Randolph, Louisville,

Calif. He preceded her in death. She worked in housekeeping departments of
various hotels until becoming disabled and retired.

and Heidi Anderson, all of Ventura, Calif.; a sister, Jacqueline Blackman,

School. He married Ellen Matilda Withington on May 14, 1931, in Stockton. She

1923, at Calhan, Colo., to George W. and Myrle (Ellis) Dove. He was a graduate
of Stockton High School. He married Lila Elaine Lenhard on Dec. 25, 1942. He
first farmed and then was employed by Federal Crop Insurance, retiring in 1985
after 30 years of service. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Hays,
and Masonic Lodge, Stockton.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; a son,
George L. Dove, Topeka; two daughters, Lila L. Evans and Mary Lynn Dove, both of
Phoenix; two grandchildren, Brenda Shupe and husband, Marty, and Eugene Dove;

Stockton in 1934 to manage a grocery store. He later became owner-operator of
Webster's Super Market for 48 years. He married Eloise Briggs on May 19, 1935,

Manor, Whitewater, where she had been a resident following a severe stoke in
October 2002. She was born Sept. 17, 1910, in Rooks County to David James and
Myrtle (Fulcher) Steeples. She married Clyde Nutsch in 1933. He preceded her in
death in 1938. She co-owned and operated a restaurant in Palco, and later
pastored a church in the Arapahoe, Neb. area. She then married James S. Herron
in 1947, in Denver. She farmed northwest of Scott City for many years.
Survivors include a son, Nathan Herron, Scott City; two daughters, Ruth
Deatrich, Wake Forest, N.C., and Mary Smith, Phillipsburg; 11 grandchildren; 38
great-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren; and five
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a grandson and a
great-granddaughter.

WALDO — Jean E. Piland, 81, died on Jan. 29 at Hays Medical Center in Hays. She
was born Aug. 8, 1924, at Broughton, the daughter of Harry C. and Edith (Wait)
May. She graduated from Codell High School in Codell. She married James H.
Piland on June 6, 1960, at Luray. A resident of Waldo, she worked as a welder in
the aircraft industry in Wichita during World War II. Mrs. Piland was a member
of the Waldo United Methodist Church, where she taught children’s Sunday School
for many years.
Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Bill
Lahar of Douglass; one daughter, Karen Carney of Hoisington; three brothers, Bob
May of Hays, Charles May of Salina, and Dean May of Branson, Mo.; eight
grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m on
Wednesday at the Waldo United Methodist Church with the Rev. Chris Holtorf
officiating. There is no visitation; cremation has taken place. In lieu of
flowers, memorials are suggested to the church or the Waldo Senior Center and

graduate of Covington High School, Covington, Okla. He married Velma Hrabe on
March 2, 1940, in Stockton. She preceded him in death Jan. 23, 2006. He worked
in the oil fields in the Plainville area.

Kansas City, Mo.; a sister Violette Blakely, Douglas, Okla.; three grandsons;

She graduated from Woodston High School in 1936. She married Ernest Leland in
1949, at Stockton. He preceded her in death Feb. 15, 1976. She served as a
senior companion in Stockton for more than 25 years.
Survivors include three
sons, Mike Colvin of Sedalia, Mo., Lorrin Leland, Olathe, and Bob Leland,
Lawrence; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and three
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Theresa
Ann Anderson.

12, 1930, at rural Zurich. He preceded her in death Feb. 26, 2000. She was a
homemaker and member of Ellis United Methodist Church, UMW Prayer Circle and had
taught Sunday school for many years.
Survivors include a son, Warner Dietrich
and wife, Sandy, Lyons; a daughter, Bernadine Helget and husband, Bob, Hays; a
sister-in-law, Helen Miller, Hays; seven grandchildren; two step grandchildren;
nine great-grandchildren; and nine step great-grandchildren.
She was preceded
in death by two brothers, Everette Hadley and Bill Hadley; two sisters, Maude

Natoma High School, Hutchinson Junior College and Wichita State University with
a bachelor's degree in social work. She married Kenneth L. Baumer on Aug. 28,
1938, at Natoma. He preceded her in death Feb. 14, 1999. She was a retired
social worker and financial secretary. She was a member of United Methodist
Church United Methodist Women Tri-M Sunday School Class, Circle 2, served as
secretary for Hutchinson Symphony for 25 years, facilitated Mother-to- Mother
Ministries, helped form Reno County Child Care Association and volunteered for
Hutchinson Community Ministry, Hospice of Reno County and Meals on Wheels.
Survivors include a daughter, Ann Baumer Pyle, Luray; a brother, Robert Paul
Chesney, Woodston; three grandchildren, Dana Sue Farrar, Jennifer Ann Nicholson
and David Lord Scott Nicholson; and four great-grandchildren, Rachel Lee
Nicholson, David Wayne Nicholson, Summer Danielle Farrar and Susannah Jean

She was a 1962 graduate of Plainville Rural High School and attended Brown
Mackie College, Salina. She married John C. Kleinschmidt on Sept. 5, 1964, at
Plainville. She worked as an office manager for a law firm in Oakley for 12
years; judicial assistant to Judge Corwin Spencer and later for Judge Mary Beck
Briscoe with the Kansas Court of Appeals for 18 years; and judicial assistant to
Judge Mary Beck Briscoe, U.S. Court of Appeals, 10th Circuit in 1995. She was a
member of Crestview United Methodist Church, Crestview United Methodist Women
and Faith Circle.
Survivors include her husband, of the home; a son, Scott
Kleinschmidt; a daughter, Susan Poling; her mother; a brother, Gary Davis; and
three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father.
She was
cremated.

retiring in 2000 after 36 years of service.

Jeanette Roberts, 90, Hill City, died Monday, Jan. 2, 2006, at Graham County
Hospital, Hill City. She was born Aug. 4, 1915, in rural Damar to R. P. and
Laura (Desbien) Berland. She married Eugene “Beano” Roberts on Jan. 10, 1934, at
Damar. He preceded her in death on Dec. 27, 2003.
Survivors include seven
sons, Marvin Roberts, Damar, Gayle Roberts, Overbrook, Randy Roberts,
Broomfield, Colo., Rick Roberts, Donald Roberts, Dwight Roberts and Cletus
Roberts, all of Hill City; six daughters, Betty Hamel, Hays, Jeanine Noah,
Wichita, Judy Bomgardner, Brandon, Miss., Myra Robben-Kline, Camdenton, Mo.,
Cynthia Wilson, Loveland, Colo., and Teri Haulman, Broomfield, Colo.; a brother,
Alverize Berland, Hill City; 34 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; and 10
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna
Sue; two grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Services will be at 10 a.m.
Thursday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Hill City; burial in St.
Joseph Cemetery, Damar.
Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. today at
Stinemetz Funeral Home, 522 N. Pomeroy, Hill City, and from 9 a.m. until the
time of the service Thursday at the church. Rosary will be at 7:30 p.m.
Wednesday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph Catholic
Church Restoration Fund or Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church or for
Masses.

Herman Theodore Eilers, oldest son of Herman T. and Inez L. (Shubert) Eilers was
born June 23, 1933, on the farmstead southwest of Plainville where he spent all
of his childhood and teen years. He met his savior on Jan. 2, 2006, at the Rooks
County Health Center, after a short illness. On Nov. 24, 1956, he married
Shirley Marie Wells, daughter of Marie Hilda Bieker and Frank Warren Wells. To
this union was born Inez Marie Eilers on Aug. 1, 1957. She died March 27, 1976;
and Herman T. Eilers III, who was born Aug. 5, 1959, and died March 7, 1986.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; a sister, Charlotte Rose Nelson and her
husband, Ken, of Vancouver, Wash., and two children; a brother, Harold F. Eilers
of Plainville and his five children; three grandsons, Jay Eilers and his wife,
Liza, and four daughters of Plainville; Jeremy Eilers and his wife, Renee, and
son of Zurich; Jessy Eilers and daughter-in-law, Nancy Barrette of Oklahoma; and
a host of friends and relatives. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church,
Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Kansas Peace Officers Association, AARP,
National Rife Association, and a veteran having served the Marine Corps during
the Korean War. He was a 1951 graduate of Plainville High School. Herman was the
former police chief for the city of Plainville and a former deputy for Rooks
County Sheriff's Office. Upon retirement, he involved himself with The Hays
Daily News. Throughout his lifetime, he was employed in the oil field and with
farming. He also enjoyed outdoor activities such as hunting and fishing, which
he loved almost as much as sports, family, and his love of God.
Services will
be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 5 at the Sacred Heart Church, Plainville. Military
graveside services by the Plainville VFW will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery,
Plainville.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the
Plainville Funeral Home, 320 S.W. 2nd, in Plainville, with a parish vigil
scheduled for 7 p.m. at the funeral home. There will also be a Ladies Guild
Rosary at 3 p.m., a Daughters of Isabella Rosary at 6:40 p.m., just before the
vigil service, and a Knights of Columbus Rosary immediately following the vigil
service. Also, refreshments will be served at the Plainville VFW after the vigil
service.
Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice and may

Carole Kay Eisiminger
PLAINVILLE — Carole Kay Eisiminger, 63, Plainville,
died Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005. Mrs. Eisiminger was born Carole Kay Hughes on May
15, 1942, in Hays. She was an English teacher at Plainville High School for 13
years. She and her husband operated the Plainville Dairy Queen.
Survivors
include her husband, John, of the home; a daughter, Shari Bobek of Plainville; a
son Brad of Ulysses; a sister, Jeanne DeCrow of Glenwood Springs, Colo.; a
brother, Ron Hughes of Glenwood Springs; and nine grandchildren.
The funeral
will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church, Plainville. Burial
will be in Plainville Cemetery.

Robert John “Bob” Roy, 59, Stockton, died
Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005 at his home. He was born Sept. 13, 1946, in Hays, to
Emile and Leona (Kriley) Roy. He graduated from the Englewood High School,
Englewood, Colo. and was in the Army during the Korean War. He worked for the
city of Stockton. He married Linda Nyberg.
Survivors include two sons, Nathan
Roy, Winfield and Andrew Roy, Lawrence; his parents of Englewood, Colo. and two
sisters Dianne Williams, Monument, Colo. and Patty Challacombe, Denver.
Services will be 9:30 a.m. Monday at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Stockton;
burial in St. Thomas Cemetery.
Visitation from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at
Smith-Moore-Overlease Funeral Home. There will be a parish vigil service at 7
p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Esther A. Biggs, age 87 of Manhattan, died Sunday, January 1, 2006 in the
Honstead House at Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community. She was born on
December 6, 1918 in St. John, KS, the daughter of John W. and Alice Jane
(Kennedy) Lill. On December 31, 1937, she was united in marriage to Verlan L.
Biggs, Sr. He preceded her in death in May 1995. Esther was homemaker and a
member of the Macksville Christian Church. She was a Girl Scout leader, an avid
reader and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She played the
piano, sang in the church choir and also was the drum major for her college
marching band in Edmond, OK.
She is survived by four children, Alice Anne
Elliott and her husband Wayne of Reston, VA, Verlan Biggs, Jr. and his wife Jo
of Moundridge, KS, Myron Biggs and his wife Kay of Monroe, GA and Brenda Parker
and her husband Warren of Manhattan, KS; two sisters, Sarah Lock of Seattle, WA,
Ruth Tuttle of Wheatridge, CO, Joe Lill and his wife Lilli of Falls Church, VA
and Harlan Lill of Plainville, KS; six grandchildren, Garry Gurney, Shanen
Elliott, Gale Coleman, Joel Biggs, Todd Biggs and Kaci Parker and five
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 P.M. Wednesday,
January 4, 2006 at the Grace Baptist Church with Pastor Bob Arthur officiating.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, January 5, 2006 in the
Farmington Cemetery in Macksville, KS.
The family will receive friends from
5:00 P.M. until 6:30 P.M. Tuesday at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home
and from 9:30 A.M. until 10:30 A.M. Thursday at the Minnis Chapel in Macksville,
KS.
