Pauline (Hartzler) Glendening, 95, Stockton, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2008, at Solomon Valley Manor, Stockton. She was born Feb. 17, 1913, near Woodston to John and Clara (Jones) Carlson. She graduated from Woodston High School. She married Wilbur Hartzler on Aug. 16, 1933, in Woodston. He preceded her in death in 1962. She later married Verl H. Glendening on April 12, 1984. He preceded her in death in 1993. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include three sons, Duane C. Hartzler, Tucson, Ariz., Darrell L. Hartzler, Broken Arrow, Okla., and Everett D. Hartzler, Euless, Texas; a daughter, Shirley Ann Berry, Athens, Ga.; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Kemp Family Funeral Chapel "Chapel on the Hill," 805 North Cedar, Stockton, KS 67669; burial in Sumner Cemetery, Alton.

Wanda M. Kreller, 79, Stockton, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008, at St. John's Health Care Center, Victoria. She was born April 2, 1929, in Loup City, Neb. She was an Avon representative.
Survivors include four sons, Michael Kreller, Victoria, Mark Kreller, Orlando, Fla., Dennis Kreller, Golden, Colo., and David Kreller, Manhattan; a sister, Shirley Grudinski, Grand Island, Neb.; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tony, and a daughter, Kathleen Kreller.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Stockton, with burial in St. Thomas Cemetery.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday with a parish vigil service at 7 p.m. Sunday and a rosary to follow at Smith-Moore-Overlease Funeral Home.

Survivors: daughter, Tammy (Ken) Fletcher, of Lansing, Mich.; son, Jeff (Debbie), of Ionia, Mich.; stepdaughter, Denise (Jesse) Hulse, of Shawnee; brothers, Marty, of Grand Ledge, Mich., and Henry, of Lansing; and 11 grandchildren. Garth William LeRock, 90, Plainville, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008, at Rooks County Health Center, Plainville. He was born Oct. 12, 1918, in Alton, to William H. and Freda E. (Strange) LeRock. He was a 1937 graduate of Alton High School. He married Clara Agnes Hrabe on Oct. 30, 1940, in Hays. He was an auto mechanic.
Survivors include his wife, of the family home; two sons Gary Garth and Allan Joseph, both of Plainville; 4 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at United Methodist Church, Plainville; burial in Plainville City Cemetery.

L. Marie (Glick) Meyers, 92, Plainville, died Monday, Dec. 8, 2008, at her home. She was born March 3, 1916, south of Zurich to Pete and Ethel (Johnson) Glick. She married Lawrence Meyers on Sept. 2, 1937. He preceded her in death. She was a cook at Sacred Heart Catholic School for 28 years.
Survivors include two sons, Ronald Meyers, Stamford, Neb., and Kenny Meyers, Wichita, Kansas; two daughters Carolyn Horton, Golden, Colo., and Janet Languein, Plainville; a brother, Herb Glick, Plainville; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a granddaughter and a great-granddaughter.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Plainville.

Teresa Venneberg, 85, Hays, formerly of Plainville, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, at Hays Good Samaritan Center. She was born June 26, 1923, in Hays to Nick F. and Catherine (Schyler) Arnhold. She graduated from Girls Catholic High School, Hays. She married Roger D. Venneberg on Aug. 10, 1942, in Wichita. He preceded her in death Dec. 6, 1998. She was co-owner of Arnhold's Furniture, Plainville.
Survivors include a son, Roger Jr. Venneberg, Westminister, Colo.; two daughters, Janet Schmidt, Valley Falls, and Darlene Cole, Hays; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a grandson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Art; and an infant son. Survivors include her daughter, Myra Chrisler and husband Delmar, Natoma; son, David and wife Joan, Delta, Colo.; four granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren.

Aldea F. Finnesy, 76, Selden, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008, at Sheridan County Long Term Care, Hoxie. She was born Dec. 8, 1931, in Plainville to Joe H. and Marjorie (True) Schrandt. She attended Plainville and Selden schools and was a 1949 graduate from Selden. She married Matt Finnesy on Sept. 5, 1950, in Plainville. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, of the home; four sons, Dan Finnesy, Halstead, John Finnesy, Bennett, Colo., Mike Finnesy, McCook, Neb., and Steve Finnesy, Spring Hill, Fla.; two daughters, Marjorie Byrd, Independence, Mo., and Colleen Barry, Marquette; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Virginia Smith in 2002.

Lea Ann Smith, 51, Plainville, died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008, at Hays Medical Center. She was born Jan. 8, 1957, in Nashville to Omer and Joyce (Kangaisser) Vierthaler. She married Fred Smith on March 20, 1975, in Clayton, N.M. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, of the home; three sons, Shawn Smith and Blake Smith, both of Plainville, and Joshua Smith, Geneseo; a daughter, Rebecca Merklein, Phillipsburg; her parents, Hutchinson; five brothers, Doug, Ted, Dave, Bruce and Tom, all of Hutchinson; a sister, Jane Brown, Hutchinson; and five grandchildren.

Leona M. Gibson, 82, Stockton, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2008, at Solomon Valley Manor, Stockton. She was born May 20, 1926, in Stockton to Charles and Goldie (Rice) Combs. She married Junior H. Gibson on July 17, 1943, in Naponee, Neb. He preceded her in death Feb. 13, 2004. She was secretary to Colorado State Brand office.
Survivors include three daughters, Betty Spicka and Peggy Williams, both of Loveland, Colo., and Roberta Farson, Riverton, Wyo.; a sister, Pauline Southard, Stockton; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Doug Gibson, on March 30, 2003.

Herbert V. "Herb" Jones, 84, Stockton, died Monday, Nov. 10, 2008, at Solomon Valley Manor, Stockton. He was born Jan. 10, 1924, in Woodston to Edward V. and Edna (Gillilan) Jones. He graduated from Woodston Rural High School. He married Elta Janet Fenton on Oct. 23, 1946, in Stockton. She preceded him in death April 7, 2001. He was owner of Jones Ford Motor Co., Stockton, before retiring. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II.
Survivors include two daughters, Virginia Hamilton, Overland Park, and Kay Lawrence, Wichita; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mike Jones on June 19, 1996.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Smith-Moore-Overlease Funeral Home, Stockton; burial in Woodston Cemetery with military honors provided by Monroe-Taylor-Barnes Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8873.

Melvin Leo Pulec, 63, Stockton, died Monday, Oct. 27, 2008, at his home. He was born Aug. 23, 1945, in rural Ellis County to Ernest and Elma (Woody) Pulec. He married Mary Kollman on April 26, 1973, in Stockton. He worked and was retired from the Rooks County Road and Bridge Department.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; seven daughters, Tina, St. Joseph, Mo., Brenda, Sherry and Heather, all of Stockton, Melva, Hays, and Jessica and Melinda, both of Wichita; three brothers, Duane, Luray, and Larry and Eugene, both of Stockton; two sisters, Arlene, Woodston, and Elda, Garden City, Mo.; and nine grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Stockton City Cemetery.

She was a 1951 graduate of Stockton High School and earned an associate's degree in 1953 from Stephens College, Columbia, Mo. She married Don G. Schneider on June 10, 1953, in Stockton.
Survivors include two sons, David Schneider, Leawood, and Dwight Schneider, Stockton; a daughter, Donnell Pfannenstiel; and six grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at United Methodist Church, Stockton; burial in Stockton City Cemetery.

Mildred "Lucille" Richmond, 86, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008, at Good Samaritan Hospital, Kearney, Neb. She was born on Aug. 5, 1922, in Phillipsburg to Charles and Bessie (Roy) Willcox. She was a 1940 graduate of Phillipsburg High School. She attended Fort Hays State College, where she received a teaching certificate. She later attended Kearney State Teachers College and University of Nebraska. She married Donald Richmond May 25, 1948, in Hays. She was a school teacher in rural schools in Phillips, Rooks, Russell and Ellis counties as well as public schools in Beaver City, Elwood, Orleans, Oxford, and Ragan in Nebraska.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Donald Jr., Kear-ney; two daughters, Pam Dickinson, Kearney and Sheri Rice, Grand Island, Neb.; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Connie Shell in September 2003.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Hope Evangelical Free Church; additional memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church, Codell; burial in Shiloh Cemetery, rural Codell.
Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday at Banta-Torrey Funeral Home, Alma, Neb., and before time of service Monday at the church.

DELPHOS -- Anthony W. "Tony" Allen, 51, Delphos, died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008. Mr. Allen was born Jan. 20, 1957, in Plainville, the son of James W. and Betty E. (Thompson) Allen. After serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, Mr. Allen completed diesel mechanic training at Salina Vo-tech. He worked primarily in the Salina area for Holiday Mansions and the Salina Journal. Most recently, Mr. Allen worked in maintenance for the USD 239 school district.
Tony was preceded in death by his father, James, in 1993; and a brother, James Arthur Allen, in 1955. Survivors include his daughter, Heather Dawn; mother, Betty E. Whittecar; brother, Bob Allen and wife Ernestine; sister, Diana Kiemel, all of Salina; one grandson; one niece; and five nephews.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, at Belmont Boulevard Christian Church, 2508 Belmont Blvd., Salina 67401, the Rev. Greg Guy officiating.

She graduated from Kirwin High School and later from Fort Hays University with a degree in elementary education. She married Jack L. Bennett on Dec. 31, 1954, in Kensington, He preceded her in death Jan. 28, 2005. She was a first-grade teacher for more than 27 years at Stockton Grade School before retiring.
Survivors include a son, Scott Bennett, Stockton; three daughters, Denise McNulty, Stockton, Deena Lamp, Phillipsburg, and Darcy Wilson, Agassiz British Columbia, Canada; a half-brother, Ron Meyers, Burlington, Colo.; four half-sisters, Joy Bowman and Debra Phelps, both of Littleton, Colo., and Norma Harrison and Kay Carson, both of Burlington, Colo.; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Survivors include a son, Joshua Plante; a daughter, Hannah Brown; her parents; a sister, Krystal Kendall, Vidor, Texas; three brothers, Nathan and Cody Kendall, both of Vidor, and Andrew Brown, who is deployed with the Navy in Okinawa, Japan; and two grandmothers, Lee Rozean and Viola Brown.
She was preceded in death by two grandfathers, Wade Rozean and Kenny Brown.

Hart, Rio Rancho, N.M.; son, Randy and wife Kathy, Meriden; daughter-in-law, Stacy Keller, Oriental, N.C.; brother, Hallis Hrabe, Modesto, Calif.; sister, Ietta Wise, Plainville; and five grandchildren. She attended Eureka and Verveka rural schools. She attended Webster High School for two years. She graduated from Mantua Township School in 1926 and enrolled at Kent College. She graduated from Ottawa University with a Bachelor of Science degree in home economics. She married Merl Griebel on June 12, 1930, in Hays. He preceded her in death. She taught home economics at Webster and Stockton schools until 1975.
Survivors include a son, John Phillip and wife, Donna, Stockton; a daughter, Mary Ann Peaslee, Fort. Thomas, Ky.; a sister, Betty Ahlen of Fort Morgan, Iowa; five grandchildren, Steven Peaslee and wife, Marilynn, Lincoln, Neb., Douglas Peaslee and wife, Denise, Erlanger, Ky., Donna Jo Griebel and husband, Curtis Rosebraugh, Ashton, Md.; John Curtis Griebel and wife, Susan, Stockton, and Lisa Griebel and husband, Douglas Mosebach, Renton, Wash.; 13 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and three step-great-great-grandchildren.
Private services will be Thursday, followed by graveside services at 11 a.m.in Mount Vernon Cemetery northwest of Stockton.

She did graduate work in embryology at the University of Kansas and completed medical technology certification at St. Lukes Hospital, Kansas City. She married Truman D. Gregory on May 16, 1948, in Salina. He preceded her in death March 30, 1984. She was a registered medical technician in Hays and Norton State Hospital.
Survivors include a son, John D. Gregory, Assaria; and two granddaughters.

He was a Plainville resident since 1972, formerly of Hays. He was an oilfield laborer and co-owner of Lucky Iron Oil Production.
Mr. Link was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Plainville.
Survivors include a son, Buck Link, of Phoenix, Ariz.; three daughters, Dawn Stephanie Schramm of Middleton, Wis., Brandy Rene Lee of Fort Morgan, Colo., and Terri Rae Link of Newberg, Ore.; his mother, Dixie Link, of Salina; a brother, Randy Link, of Wichita; two sisters, Vicki Black of Stillwater, Okla., and Paula Link of Salina; and six grandchildren.

He was owner of Spencer Honda, Stockton. He was a U.S Army veteran, serving during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; five daughters, Connie Klepper, Ellinwood, Carla Mahon, Galva, Candace Orona Leigh, Tuscaloosa., Ala., Donna Johnson, Wamego, and Marilee Gumm, Glasco; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Caroline Corine Garrett, age 87, passed away on sunday, July 27, 2008, at her home in Cassville, Missouri, following a lengthy illiness. Mrs. Garrett, daughter of George and Malvina Plante Newell, was born on January 18, 1921, in Damar, Kansas. Caroline was a natural artist. She was a member of St. Edward's Catholic Church in Cassville, Missouri. She married Leonard LaBarge who died on November 27, 1944 while serving with the U. S. Armed Forces in Germany during World War II. She married Melvin Garrett on April 5, 1955 in Wichita, Kansas, and he survives.
Additional survivors include one son, Larry LaBarge and his wife, Joyce; one grandson, Darin LaBarge and his wife, Terri; one granddaughter, Monique Ellis and her husband, Shane; three great-grandchildren, Madison, Nolan and Maegan; one step-son Johnny Charles, of Sacramento, California; two step-daughters, Berna Gaye Weiland, of Phoenix, Arizona, and Elizabeth Ann of the state of California; and one brother, Edward Newell, of Hoxie, Kansas. In addition to her parents and first husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Admore Newell and Armand Newell, and two sisters, Ida Saindon and one sister who died at a very young age.
Visitation will be from 7:00 p.m. until after the vigil service that will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 31st at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Damar. Charles (Chuck) Durlin Reading, was born May 28, 1938 to Durlin D. Reading and Alvera Berg Reading in Idaho Falls, ID. He graduated from I. F.. High School in 1956. He Joined the U.S. Navy in June 1956 and was released from active duty in June 1960. He came to Denver, CO in 1961 to work for AT&T, later for Mountain Bell and retiring from US West in 1992. He was active in the Telephone Pioneers for many years and received many awards from the Pioneers. As his health failed, he was not able to be active with his volunteer work. He was a custom leather tooler, wood craftsman, and enjoyed his days playing the piano. He also made his own kites, and loved flying his kites with his children and grandchildren.
Chuck is survived by, his wife Janice(Simpson), (formally of Codell KS) of the home. His son Brad (Denise) Reading; his Daughters Kimberly (Mike) Shuman; Brenda Armendariz; Heidi Sarmiento; and Dawn Reading; His Sister, Barbara (Carlos) Manzanares; 11 Grandchildren and 4 Great Grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by, his Parents, Infant son, Charles Jr., Brother, Robert Reading, and Nephew, Marco Manzanares.
His body was cremated and his remains will be put to rest at the Norman Cemetery, Ellis County KS at a later date with Military Honors. (He died June 18, 2008 in Denver, CO.)

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Anita, and a step-son, Dana Grover.

Velma was a member of the Rainbow Girls Society, graduated with honors from East High in Wichita. Then, she attended the Vernon Beauty School graduating with honors as a Beautician. She met the light love of her life, Carl Chester Williams (native of DesArc, Ark), through her cousin, later married sharing his life as the wife of a Decorated Korean/Vietnam US Army Veteran. She traveled the world with Carl, maintained her salon in her home while he served in the military. January 31, 2008 they shared their 55th wedding anniversary. She was 3 years old when she was preceded in death by her father, Charles Edwin Meistrell (51), brother, Charles Edwin Meistrell, Jr. (8) in a DUI accident. Later her mother Della (83) in 1985; 2 grandchildren by her daughter; 1 great-grandchild by her granddaughter.
Survivors include husband, Carl Chester Williams - retired US Army Veteran and two children Carla J. Williams, RN, BSN disabled Navy Vietnam Veteran of Haysville, Kans, 1 great-granddaughter, Dasha M. Taft (Dale) Nichols, Springdale, Ark 4 great-grandsons; son John E. (Kristi) Williams, retired US Air Force Veteran, Las Vegas.
Visitation viewing will be from 1-2:30, Saturday, May 31 at Dunsford~Zeiner Funeral Home, Augusta. Saturday, June 7, 2-3 visitation graveside service at Culpepper Lakes Cemetery in DeValls Bluff, Ark.

William Doyle "Doyle" Holcombe, 79, died Sunday, May 25, 2008, at Solomon Valley Manor, Stockton. He was born May 17, 1929, northeast of Stockton to John Wesley and Matilda Susan (Napier) Holcomb(e). He was a 1948 graduate of Stockton High School. He married Neva Maxine McCormick on Aug. 18, 1949. She preceded him in death in June 2006. He was an aircraft inspector.
Survivors include a son, Garold Doyle Holcombe, Maud, Okla.; a daughter, Wilma M. Welch, Stockton; a sister, Mary C. Morgan, White Plains, Md.; two grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
He was preceded in death, by an infant daughter, Carol Jean, in 1952; a stillborn son, David, in 1955; and an infant grandson in 1973.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Stockton Cemetery.

She was a graduate of Alton High School. She married Thomas Welker on June 1, 1940. He preceded her in death in July 1970. She later married Cleon Dettmer in May 1984. He preceded her in death in March 2006. She was a telephone operator for Woodston Rural Telephone.
Survivors include a son, Leon Welker, Stockton; two daughters, Arlyne Maddy, Salina, and Kathryn Couch, Wilson; twin brothers, Cleo Delaney and Cletus Delaney, Osborne; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Paul passed away Wednesday, May 21, 2008 at his home in Stockton. He was born December 18, 1949 in Smith Center, Kansas the son of John and Wilma (Blecha) Conger. He graduated from Woodston High School and from Beloit Vo-Tech with a degree in heavy equipment operating. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War serving in the Navy. Paul was a cattleman (which he called his girls) in the Woodston area and had his own silage cutting business. He was a life member and past commander of the Monroe-Taylor-Barnes V.F.W. Post #8873 in Stockton, raising horses, and collecting guns.
Survivors include his parents John and Wilma Conger of Woodston; daughter Jana Conger of Stockton; sons John wife Tina Conger of Hays, Jake wife Crissy of Kanorado, Kansas; brother Grant Conger of Stockton; 5 grandchildren Cody, Colter, Jeston, Chase, and Kya.

She was a member of St. Fidelis Catholic Church and Daughters of Isabella, Victoria.

Havlas on Sept. 12, 1942, in Olathe. He preceded her in death Nov. 23, 1989. She later married Thomas Parke in 1991. He preceded her in death in 2007. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella, Eagle's Auxiliary, Sisters of Survivorship and Sunflower Polka Club, all of Hays.
Survivors include two daughters, Sue Noll, Hays and Theresa McCarthy, Manhattan; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, James Havlas, in 2007.

He preceded her in death April 29, 1969. She later married Delbert D. Deschner on Nov. 27, 1970, in Natoma. She worked at hospitals in Stafford, Wichita and Plainville.
Survivors include her husband, of the home; a son, Michael L. Meyers, Topeka; five step-children, Michael Deschner, Scott City, Bruce Deschner, Topeka, Kim Davis, Manhattan, Brad Deschner, Great Bend, and Lori Wangsgard, Wichita; two sisters, Katie Corwin, Plainville, and Margorie Martin, Orlando; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Fenton was born July 16, 1912, in Rooks County, KS. He married Martha Edith Harbour on June 19,1937 in Ellis, KS. He got a job with the Union Pacific Railroad and moved to Kansas City, KS where he was a resident from 1940 until 2002 when he moved to Emporia to live with his son, William Selbe. He was an active member of Stephens Memorial United Methodist Church, a cub scoutmaster and one of the few registered male Girl Scouts for the Santa Fe Trail Council of the Girl Scouts for many years. He was known as "Mr. Camp Tongawood" for his support of the Girl Scout camp near Tonganoxie, KS.
Fenton was preceded in death by his wife in 1994. He is survived by two brothers, Charles and Jack Selbe, Plainville, KS, three daughters, Marjorie Christy, Gladstone, MO, Betty Selbe, Kansas City, KS, and Jerre Roller, Garden City, MO, one son, William Selbe, Emporia, KS, 9 Grandchildren and 14 Great-Grandchildren.

Ben Niermeier, 87, Stockton, died Monday, April 7, 2008, at Hays Medical Center. He was born Dec. 8, 1920, in Ludell to Henry William and Anna (Holste) Niermeier. He graduated from Atwood High School. He married Vera Schoen on June 11, 1950, in Downs. He was the owner of the Culligan Water Conditioning, Stockton, from 1952 until retirement in 1980. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; a son, J. D. Niermeier, Depauw, Ind.; two daughters, Debra Niermeier, Oklahoma City, Okla., and Linda Ireton, Bennington; a brother, Wilbur Niermeier, Morristown, S.D.; five grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren.

A devoted wife, mother, and homemaker, Charlotte was a deeply spiritual person and an active member of University Methodist Church for many years. Kind and gentle, a lover of music and flowers, she will be greatly missed. The funeral was held in Seattle on March 19, 2008. Hugh E. Meade, 98, Hays, formerly of Palco, died Wednesday, March 12, 2008, at Hays Good Samaritan Center. He was born July 19, 1909, in Palco to Harlan and Aseneth (Fesler) Meade. He married Zelma Marcotte on July 5, 1927, in Hays. She preceded him in death in September 1982. He later married Marceline Dick in July 1984. She preceded him in death. He was a postmaster of Palco and owned Oil Field Construction Firm. He was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church, Zurich, a charter member of Lion's Club, Palco. He was a former county commissioner of Rooks County and past president of County Commissioners of Kansas.
Survivors include two daughters, Dorene Sleichter and Jean Berland, both of Hays; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Marion Meade and Harlan Meade.

E. Grace Boyer, 93, Plainville, died Monday, March 3, 2008, at Rooks County Health Center, Plainville. She was born Sept. 5, 1914, in Ellis County to Theodore and Elsie (Romine) Loreg. She married George "Earl" Boyer on March 2, 1934, in Russell. He preceded her in death Feb. 23, 1987. She was a cook at Red Bud Village and Rooks County Health Center, Plainville.
Survivors include a daughter, Sharon "Elaine" Comstock, Edmond, Okla.; a sister, Betty Reed, Great Bend; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a grandson.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church, Plainville.

She was a graduate of Plainville High School and Brown Mackie College, Salina. She married Richard "Dick" Cherry on Nov. 1, 1950. She worked as a stenographer and bookkeeper for Co-op Pipeline, La Verne Oklahoma hospital and Plainville Medical Clinic.
Survivors include her husband, of the home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church, Plainville; burial in Plainville City Cemetery.

Funeral services for Vivian E. Ganoung, age 77, of rural Plainville will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 8, 2008 at the United Methodist Church in Plainville with Reverend Barbara Patterson officiating. Mrs. Ganoung passed away Saturday, March 1, 2008 at the home of her daughter in Victoria, Kansas. She was born Vivian Ellen Shaffer on September 6, 1930 on the family farm near Waldo, Kansas the daughter of Clarence and Lola (Dunkel) Shaffer. She graduated from Russell High School in 1948. The next 3 months were spent on the family farm helping her mother. She then began working at the Home State Bank in Russell where she was an employee for the next 5 years. In 1953 she moved to Kansas City where she was employed at a bank until 1955. She married Herman Ganoung, Jr. on May 8, 1955 in Waldo, Kansas. They had four children Craig, Rick, Robyn, and Patti. They made their home on a farm S. E. of Plainville where she was a housewife and mother. Vivian was very involved with school and was a 4-H leader for many years and was a member of the United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women and later the Rooks County Health Center Auxiliary, the Priscilla Arts Club, and the Stitch and Chatter all in Plainville. She loved to travel and even made a trip to Japan and Europe. She enjoyed baking and was known and loved for her hand baked goodies she brought to the hospital and to bake sales for her church and also baked wedding cakes for many weddings. Vivian and Herman enjoyed square dancing and were charter members of the Swing-N-Wheels Square Dance Club.
Survivors include two sons Craig Ganoung of Eagle Rock, Missouri, Rick Ganoung of Plainville, Kansas; two daughters Robyn and husband Kevin Karlin of Victoria, Kansas, Patti and husband Don Dopita of Zurich, Kansas; two sisters Agnes Sims of Headville, Kansas, and Pat and husband Lloyd Quinn of Salina, Kansas; and sister-in-law Carol Shaffer of Waldo, Kansas; 17 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and many friends and relatives. She was preceded in death by her husband Herman, grandson Cody Ganoung, her parents, sisters Louise Booth, Wilma Johnson, Betty Funk, and Fern Shaffer; brother Charles Shaffer; 2 half brothers, Lloyd and Earl Shaffer; brothers-in-law Glenn Booth, Larry Sims, Lamar Johnson, Clyde Funk, Raymond Ganoung; and sister-in-law Kalita Kirkindoll.
Burial will be in the Plainville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 Thursday, 9-8 Friday at the Moore-Overlease Funeral Chapel and from 10 - service time Saturday at the Church. Florence F. Nichols, 84, Hays, formerly of Stockton, Schoenchen and Kremmling, Colo., died Monday, Feb. 25, 2008, at Hays Good Samaritan Center. She was born May 1, 1923, in Klickitat County, Washington to John L. and Opal J. (Kish) Cook. She married Wallace L. "Wally" Nichols on Sept. 14, 1945, in Fairplay, Colo. He preceded her in death Dec. 12, 1980. She was a cook at the grade and high school in Emett, Onega Nursing Home and Kremmling Hospital.
Survivors include a son, Darryl Nichols, Stockton; two daughters, Carol Werth, Schoenchen, and Cindy Nichols, Magna, Utah; a brother, Virgil Bloomquist, Independence, Mo.; eight grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was a 1943 graduate of Stockton High School. He married Mina Mae Orr on June 15, 1945, in Phillipsburg, She preceded him in death on June 29, 1996. He was the official greeter and helper at Jake's Service, Stockton.
Survivors include four sons, Robert "Jake" Miller, Lynn Miller, Harley Miller, and Craig Miller, all of Stockton; a daughter, Connie Maddy, Stockton; a brother, Duane Veda Miller, Stockton; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He married Jean Meade on Feb. 18, 1949, in Zurich. He worked for Texaco Oil Co., was a partner in Slicks Ditching Service, was a postmaster and returned to the oil fields until retirement. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. He served on the Palco City Council, USD 269 School Board, was a charter member of the Palco Lions Club, Scout Explorer Advisor, and a member of St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, Hays.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; a son, Craig Berland and wife, Bonnie, Phoenix; two daughters, Joni Jackson and husband, Stan, Hays, and Renee Jackson and husband, Rick, Hill City; three sisters, Diane Saindon, Phillipsburg, Patricia Lietz, Wichita, and Phyllis Lewis, Hill City; nine grandsons; and seven great-grandsons.

LARNED — Louis James, 80, died Feb. 17 at Hays Medical Center, Hays. He was born July 24, 1927, in Stockton, the son of Glenn Martin and Mary Ella Macy James. He married Carol V. Darnell on Sept. 16, 1956, in Osborne. He was a practicing attorney and a member of the Kansas Bar Association for more than 50 years. He was an active member of the First Christian Church in Larned, serving on the church board, elders and deacons, and was a longtime choir member. He was valedictorian of the Stockton High School Class of 1945. He was a Rotarian member for more than 50 years, a Kansas State University alumnus, a Washburn University alumnus, a Boy Scout master and a licensed ham radio operator. He had served as an assistant attorney general for the State of Kansas, the county attorney for Osborne and Pawnee counties, and the Larned city attorney.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; three sons, Andrew of Belton, Mo., Eric of Citrus Heights, Calif., and Bradley of Larned; a sister, Nola Cooper of Tonganoxie; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Lee Thomas, and a brother, Glenn Richard James.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the First Christian Church, Larned, with Pastor Dan Lundgren and the Rev. Ron Keith presiding. PHILLIPSBURG — Floyd D. Kelly, 78, died Feb. 11 at the Phillips County Hospital. Born Aug. 29, 1929, in Rooks County, he was the son of Amanda Turnbull Kelly and James F. Kelly. He attended school in Stockton, where he enjoyed playing football. Following his graduation in 1948, he enlisted in the U.S.Air Force and was stationed at Goose Bay, Labrador, Canada, where he served as a fire and crash rescuer. Upon the death of his father he returned to the family farm in Rooks County. On July 13, 1951, he was united in marriage to Maxine L. Stanton in Downs. Floyd worked as a truck driver for Halliburton in the oil fields for several years. He then became a custodian for the Logan School District, where he took great pride in his shiny floors and sharp-looking football field. One of his greatest joys was when he worked on the “chain-gang” at the football games with close friends. During these years, Floyd volunteered his time to serve as a Boy Scout leader and started one of the first Explorer posts in Kansas. In 1979 Floyd was given the opportunity to take a supervisory position with the Great Bend School District as head of maintenance and custodians. With this position he had supervision of one high school, two middle schools and eight elementary schools. He served in this capacity until his health forced his early retirement in 1990. In 1993 he and Maxine returned to Logan where they resided for 14 years. Working with woodcrafts became his favorite hobby. His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and numerous other individuals are the proud recipients of his works. Some of his happiest moments were when all his kids, grandchildren and great-grandchildren would get together. His greatest joy was time spent visiting with family and friends. He enjoyed assisting Maxine making quilts and collected pens and hats. During this time, he served on the city council at Logan and was always available to help friends that needed any assistance. They then moved to Phillipsburg..
He is survived by his wife, Maxine; six children, Michael Lynn and wife Sheila of Greeley, Colo., Marilyn Jo and husband Larry Donahey of Norton, Jacalyn Lea and husband Richard Bostick of Ellensburg, Wash., Jaynelle Rae and husband Ronald McCreery of Phillipsburg, Kevin Duane and wife Shawn of Lake Park, Iowa, and Jamie Dea and husband Ray Fischer of Claflin; 16 grandchildren, Michael O'Shawn Kelly and wife Sarah of Loveland, Colo., Kevin Patrick Kelly and wife Kelly of Greeley, Colo., Nathan Scot Donahey and wife Kerri of Norton, Amanda Leigh Donahey of Salina, Richard Neill Bostick and wife Vanessa of North Bend, Wash., Kelly Lynn and husband Andy Bacon of Ellensburg, Wash., Stephanie LeAnn and husband Patrick Bedore and J.R. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World War II in Normandy, northern France and Central Europe and Rhine Ardennes.
Survivors include a step-son, Max McClay, of Springfield, Mo.; two step-daughters, Nanette Morel, Plainville, and Maurine Francke, Flint, Mich.; two sisters, Bernice Brock, Great Bend, and Juanita Wald, Waldport, Ore.; 11 step-grandchildren; 22 step great-grandchildren; and five step-great-great-grandchildren.

Survivors include two sons, Dennis Bedore, Stockton, and Donald Bedore, Emmetsburg, Md.; two daughters, Martha Talbott, Irving, Texas, and Nancy Cary, Downs; two sisters Margaret St. Peter, Aurora, Colo., and Ann Stephen, Wichita; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a infant daughter, Mary Catherine.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Stockton; burial in St. Thomas Cemetery, with military honors provided by Monroe-Taylor-Barnes Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8873.
Visitation will be until 8 p.m. today at Smith-Overlease Funeral Home, Stockton.
A vigil will be at 7 p.m., today, followed by Knights of Columbus rosary, both at the funeral home.

Norman Gail Mason, 79, Plainville, died Thursday, January 24, 2008 at the Redbud Village in Plainville. He was a lifelong Plainville resident. Norman was born July 31, 1928 in Hays, Kansas the son of Herman and Clarron (Clements) Mason. He was united in marriage to Florence Miller on April 20, 1955 in Norfolk, Nebraska. They enjoyed nearly 48 years of marriage together until Florence passed away on May 14, 2003. Norman was a member of the United Methodist Church in Plainville. He spent most of his working life in the oilfield, operating Mason's Oilfield Service, but he enjoyed taking care of his cows. He called them his 'pets.' He could work on of fix just about anything as he was handy with many things. Norman will be greatly missed by his two daughters Norma and husband D. J. Finnesy and Geneva Mason, both of Plainville; his four grandchildren Amy Brown and Tammy Werner, both of Plainville, Blair Finnesy of Manhattan, and Jordan Schippers of Jenks, Oklahoma; nine great grandchildren; two brothers Herman Dale and Billy Mason of Plainville; and one sister Shirley Finnesy of Plainville. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a brother Roscoe, and a sister Betty Van Schuyver.
Visitation will be Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., and Monday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Mosher-Kemp Family Funeral Home, 320 SW 2nd, Plainville, KS 67663.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday January 28 at the United Methodist Church of Plainville with the Pastor Barbara Patterson officiating.
Burial will be in the Plainville Cemetery.

PLAINVILLE -- Mass of Christian burial for Norma R. Rempe, 77, Plainville, will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Plainville. Mrs. Rempe passed away Thursday, Jan. 24, 2008. She was born Norma Arnhold on Nov. 20, 1930, in Hays.
Survivors include her husband, Dale Martin Rempe, of the home; her daughters, Thea Baldwin and Gena Van Dyke, both of Plainville; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Moore-Overlease Funeral Chapel with a Ladies Guild Rosary at 3 p.m. followed by a parish vigil service at 6 p.m.

PLAINVILLE — Inez Marie Jaco, 99, died Jan. 19 at Redbud Village in Plainville. She was born on March 8, 1908, in Coffeyville, the daughter of William Jefferson and Dora Bell (Dunigan) Brown. She married Harry M. Jaco May 21, 1927 Pawhuska, Okla. They moved to Plainville in 1938. He died in 1987. Mrs. Jaco was a member of the First Christian Church and the Dorcas Club. She was an avid golfer and was active in the Rooks County Ladies Golf Club.
Survivors include two sons, Gene of Plainville and John W. of Great Bend; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. She was preceded in death by ten siblings.
Memorial service was held on Monday at Mosher-Kemp Funeral Home with Pastor Larry Lyles of the First Christian Church of Plainville officiating. Interment was in the Plainville Cemetery. He married Mary Frances Tremblay on Nov. 23, 1948, in Damar. He worked for Berexco Oil Co. from 1963 as a pumper, retiring in 1995. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; a son, Cleon Keith, El Dorado; three daughters, Brenda Holler, Salina, Rita Lill, Collierville, Tenn., and Patti Thummel, Garden City; three sisters, Thelma Mae McAfee, Duncan, Okla., Vera Louise DuVall, St. Francis, and Arvilla Marie Taylor, Studley; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Elma C. Pulec, 89, Stockton, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008, at Solomon Valley Manor, Stockton. She was born July 15, 1918, near Webster to William and Nora (Armstrong) Woody. She married Ernest L. Pulec on Nov. 27, 1938, in Hays. He preceded her in death on Feb. 21, 2001. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include four sons, Eugene Pulec, Laurence Pulec, and Melvin Pulec, all of Stockton, and Duane Pulec, Bunker Hill; two daughters, Arlene Brown,Woodston, and Elda Claunch, Garden City, Mo.; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Eldon on Feb. 15, 1984.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Stockton Cemetery.

HAYS -- Roland W. "Roly" Schlegel, 84, Hays, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2008. Mr. Schlegel was born July 2, 1923, northwest of Otis. He was an insurance agent.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jane, in 2002.
Survivors include a son, Stephen of Maud, Okla.; two daughters, Sheryl Dreiling of Hays and Laurie Curtis of Manhattan; a sister, Norma Jorgensen of Yreka, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, Seventh & Ash, Hays. Burial will be in Plainville Cemetery, with military honors by Hays Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9076.

STOCKTON -- Ruth Rosalie Miller, 84, Stockton, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2008. Mrs. Miller was born Ruth Rosalie Carroll on March 23, 1923, in Lamont, Ill. She was a retired buyer for Beech Aircraft.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Detmar "Bud," in 1992.
Survivors include her companion, Ray Fitts; a stepson Duane of Stockton; two brothers, Randy and Frank Jr.; two sisters, LaVonne and Marilyn; four grandchildren; and two step grandchildren.

Clyde B. Denton, 92, Stockton, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008, at Rooks County Health Center, Plainville. He was born April 24, 1915, in Doniphan County near Denton to Arthur and Myrtle (Burrell) Denton. He graduated from Goodland High School, Fort Hays State University with a bachelor's degree in music and a master's degree in education. He married Lois Edwards in 1939. She preceded him in death in 1947. He later married Hope Stewart on Dec. 19, 1948, in Portis. She preceded him in death Dec. 27, 2005.He taught music in Atwood and Alton. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, serving during World War II in the Pacific Theater on Guadalcanal.
Survivors include three sons, Jonathan M. Denton and David S. Denton, both of Stockton, and Clyde S. Denton, Borger, Texas; a sister, Ethel Chesnut, Goodland; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a grandson.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Main Street Christian Church, Stockton; burial in Stockton Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Smith-Moore-Overlease Funeral Home, and from 1 p.m. until time of service Saturday at church.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Clark-Gashaw Chapel, Osborne; burial in Ash Rock Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at the chapel.
