17 Feb 2008 Great Bend Tribune Floyd D. Kelly
PHILLIPSBURG — Floyd D. Kelly, 78, died Feb. 11 at the Phillips County Hospital.
Born Aug. 29, 1929, in Rooks County, he was the son of Amanda Turnbull Kelly and
James F. Kelly. He attended school in Stockton, where he enjoyed playing
football. Following his graduation in 1948, he enlisted in the U.S.Air Force and
was stationed at Goose Bay, Labrador, Canada, where he served as a fire and
crash rescuer. Upon the death of his father he returned to the family farm in
Rooks County. On July 13, 1951, he was united in marriage to Maxine L. Stanton
in Downs. Floyd worked as a truck driver for Halliburton in the oil fields for
several years. He then became a custodian for the Logan School District, where
he took great pride in his shiny floors and sharp-looking football field. One of
his greatest joys was when he worked on the “chain-gang” at the football games
with close friends. During these years, Floyd volunteered his time to serve as a
Boy Scout leader and started one of the first Explorer posts in Kansas. In 1979
Floyd was given the opportunity to take a supervisory position with the Great
Bend School District as head of maintenance and custodians. With this position
he had supervision of one high school, two middle schools and eight elementary
schools. He served in this capacity until his health forced his early retirement
in 1990. In 1993 he and Maxine returned to Logan where they resided for 14
years. Working with woodcrafts became his favorite hobby. His children,
grandchildren and great-grandchildren and numerous other individuals are the
proud recipients of his works. Some of his happiest moments were when all his
kids, grandchildren and great-grandchildren would get together. His greatest joy
was time spent visiting with family and friends. He enjoyed assisting Maxine
making quilts and collected pens and hats. During this time, he served on the
city council at Logan and was always available to help friends that needed any
assistance. They then moved to Phillipsburg..
