Restlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery

Located approximately four miles north of the City of Liberal, on Highway 83.

Restlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery was founded by Daniel J. Wise. The cemetery is divided into front and rear sections, which are further divided. When you enter the cemetery (the front section), on the right, are Savior and Masonic, in the center are Veterans and Last Supper, to the left are Devotion and 4 Seasons. The rear section is divided into narrower sections. To the far right are Garden of the Shepherd and Garden of the Stars, just off of center and to the right are Garden of the Cross and Garden of the Angels. To the far left, is Apostles.

She married Ralph A. Baker Sept. 11, 1954, in Raton, N.M. He survives. She was a 1939 graduate of Turpin (Okla.) High School. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Western Avenue Church of Christ in Liberal. Other survivors include one daughter, Theda Kaelin and husband Bill, Anaheim, Calif.; two grandchildren, Aaron and Mark Kaelin; and one sister, Clemmie Monden, Amarillo, Texas. She was preceded in death by one son, Leon Grinsdale, five brothers, Zelner, Lee, Eddie, Andrew and Herndon Polf, and two sisters, Lucille Weatherby and Joyce Szuwalski. * Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Western Avenue Church of Christ with Wade Tannehill presiding. Burial will follow at Restlawn Cemetery.

He married Janice Banister on Jan. 24, 1958, in Hugoton. She survives. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War era. He worked in the pipeline industry until he retired in 1998. His hobbies included fishing and dancing. Other survivors include four sons, Chigger Bell, Liberal, Max Bell, DeBerque, Colo., Patrick Bell, Tyrone, Okla., and Chris Bell, Tucson, Okla.; nine grandchildren; one great-grandson; and one sister, Shirley Combest. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Mike; and two sisters, Ruthie Edwards and Bet Gentry. * Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Miller Chapel. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens with military honors by Fort Riley Honor Guard.

She was a member of First Christian Church, Christian Women's Fellowship and served as deaconess and on the First Christian Church Board. She was also active in the Southwest Medical Center Auxiliary and Hobby Club. She and Roy were long-time members of the Do-Si-Do Square Dance Club.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and one son, Rodney Carlson.

She was born Oct. 30, 1917, to Daniel and Nancy Victoria Bryant in the Dombey area of Beaver County (Okla). She married Everett Edwin Hamilton May 8, 1938, in Guymon, Okla. He died March 5, 1979. She attended elementary and high school at Eureka Public School in Baker, Okla. She attended college at Panhandle State University in Goodwell, Okla., and Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, Okla. She worked as a nurse for Dunaway Manor for 20 years. She also worked at Grey's Drug, Fast Laundry and Ideal Food Store. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Hooker, Okla. Survivors include four daughters, Patrecia Dobbs and husband Joye, Hobbs, N.M., Gladys Lauderdale, Buffalo, Okla., and Nancy Weber and husband Lonnie, Hooker, Okla.; 12 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; two nephews, Bobbie Russell, Abott, Maine, and Daniel Russell, Englewood, Colo.; and one niece, Rita Russell, Englewood, Colo. She was also preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Roberts Russell; one son-in-law, Henry Lauderdale Sr.; and two grandchildren, Henry Lauderdale Jr. and Micheal Lauderdale. * Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Hooker, Okla., with Brother Eddy Scoggins presiding. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens

He was born Nov. 8, 1921, to Vincent and Mary (Lederer) Heng at Nebraska City, Neb. He married Barbara Ann Steele Aug. 8, 1950, in Liberal. She survives. He was a 1938 graduate of Nebraska City (Neb.) High School. From 1943 to 1945, he was a technician in training as a civilian for the U.S. Air Force working on B-24 radio equipment. He was owner-operator of Tri-State Communications in Liberal from 1954 to 1980. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Liberal, a Charter and Life member of Knights of Columbus Council No. 3381, Fourth Degree Knight in the Bishop A. J. Schweriner Assembly 1302, Tuesday Rosary Group at St. Anthony Catholic Church and also a member of the Elks Liberal Lodge No.1947. Other survivors include one son, Ralph Michael "Mike" Heng and wife Tonia of Waukesha, Wis.; three daughters, Sharon Martin and husband Jerry, Manhattan, Karen Todd and husband Fred, Carmel, Ind., Marilyn Williams and husband Steve, Kansas City, Mo.; five grandchildren, Christopher Carrel and wife Jill, Matthew Carrel, Kelly Martin, Jamie Martin and Mandie Reed and husband Phil; and one sister-in-law, Margaret Heng, Lincoln, Neb. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Irvin Heng Sr. * Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home in Liberal. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Liberal with Father Patrick A. Keyes and Father Tony Judge presiding. Burial will follow at Restlawn Cemetery in Liberal.

She taught home economics and sewing in a Christian school in Utah. Her hobbies included making quilts and sewing potholders, gardening, lawn work and baking breads. Survivors include one sister, Meredith Richards of Edmond, Okla.; one son, Howard Eugene Johnson and wife Etola, Grand Prairie, Texas; eight grandchildren, Sandy Landis, Yukon, Okla., Martha Gibson and husband Donnie of Hamilton, Ohio, including others; at least eight great-grandchildren, Jerry Landis and wife Michelle, Bentonville, Ark., Lorraine Potts and husband Jim, Liberal, Dana Thompson, Cincinnati, Sonny Gibson, Cincinnati, and the others from California; at least 12 great-great-grandchildren, T.J., Tyler and Tiffany Prater, Tucker, Taylor, Tanner and Bailey Landis, Bryee and Devan Thompson, Noah, Kyrie and Ayden Gibson; a few great-great-great-grandchildren; and many friends and relatives. Florence E. McCurry, 85, died Sunday, June 5, 2005, at her residence in Liberal. She was born Nov. 3, 1919, to Alexander and Mary (Patton) Whitman in Luray. She married Jay W. McCurry Aug. 1, 1940, in Emporia. He died March 15, 1985. She graduated from high school in 1938 at Paradise. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for more than 25 years and was a member of several bridge clubs. She was a charter member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. Her hobbies included bridge. Survivors include three daughters, Jackie Zimmerman, Longmont, Colo., Marry Holterman, Amarillo, Texas, and Connie Slemp and husband Larry, Hugoton; eight grandchildren, Sherah McCurry, Angie Drouhard, Todd Vanley, Tera Piper, Tiffany Brady, Brad Slemp, Jason Slemp and Mike Slemp; one brother, Elbert "Spud" Whitman and wife Beth, Paradise; and two sisters-in-law, Naomi Spencer, Kansas City, and Jackie Riddlesperger, Harrison, Ark. She was preceded in death by one son, Gary W. McCurry; three brothers, Henry, Charles and Fritz Whitman, and one sister, Opal Cronn. * Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jerry Odle presiding. Burial will be in Restlawn Cemetery in Liberal.

Thompson Irene L.9-8-1923 - 2-24-2005DODGE CITY ¬ Irene L. Thompson, 81, died Thursday, February 24, 2005, at Western Plains Medical Complex in Dodge City. She was born on Sept. 8, 1923, to Edgar and Ethel (Snyder) Thompson in Kismet. She was an elementary administrator at Miller Elementary School for 29 years. She also had taught 17 years. She graduated from Kismet Rural High School in 1941. She also graduated from Fort Hay State College with a B.S. in Education in 154 and a Masters degree in 1962. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Dodge City. Survivors include a nephew, Delbert Dean Thompson, Forgan, Okla.; three nieces, Darma McVey, Liberal, Marilyn Carter, Yorba Linda, Calif., Jeri Gorman, Casa Grande, Ariz.; and many relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by a brother, Loyd D. Thompson; and a sister, LuElla M. Green. * Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Lance Carrithers presiding. Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Monday at Swaim Funeral Home. Burial will be at Restlawn Cemetery in Liberal.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army, and received numerous awards, including the Purple Heart after being wounded at the Battle of the Bulge. He worked for Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Co. for several years and for Schlumberger Oil Field Services in Kansas and Oklahoma. He owned and operated the Trahern Furniture Store in Cushing, Okla., and later became a salesman in the oilfield industry. Returning to Liberal in 1970, he was a successful insurance salesman until 1977 when he became disabled. He was preceded in death by a son, Douglas Trahern; three brothers, Dean, Leo and Richard; three sisters, Joyce Trahern, Maxine Lightcap and Laverne Nordling. Interment with military honors by the Fort Riley Honor Guard.
