COUNTY FORMATION

Stanton County was first was created on March 20, 1873. Hamilton County absorbed it for a short time. Restoring the original boundaries in 1887, Stanton County was formally reestablished. It was named in honor of Edwin Stanton, US Secretary of War during the Civil War.

Johnson City is the County Seat.
