Martha Dirks, 86, of Colorado Springs, Colo., formerly of WaKeeney, died Thursday, May 28, 2009, after a brief illness.
She was born July 29, 1922, to Dr. Mordie L. and Minnie Maude (Pettigrew) Woods. She was a 1940 graduate of Newton High School. She received her master's degree in library science from Wayne State University, Detroit, in 1969 and a bachelor's degree in education from Fort Hays State University in 1963. She also studied in summer institutes in French at Hamilton College and library science at Denver University. She married Dr. Arthur W. Dirks on Aug. 26, 1942. She was a retired associate professor at FHSU, where she taught library science from 1969 to 1992 and also served as faculty marshal. From 1963 to 1968, she taught speech, debate, dramatics and French in Quinter and WaKeeney high schools. They moved to WaKeeney in 1958.
Survivors include a son, Arthur L. Dirks; two daughters, Renee Rowcliffe, and Dana Metcalf,; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two brothers; and three sisters.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at WaKeeney Library community room; inurnment in WaKeeney City Cemetery. Cremation has taken place.
