Birth Records

OFGS has thousands of birth records. We have two very large photocopied books dating from 1911-1953 and 1954-1989. They are full of really great information.

Files

Birth card files and a large book covers early times in Bourbon County. Death card files, a large book and many notebooks are filled with death obituaries. OFGS volunteers created a card file called "Maiden Name" which is a listing of a woman's maiden and her married name. 7 filing cabinets are full of volunteer researching of individual names. These are ancestors who a family member requested looking for information about their ancestor's lives. Our volunteers have spent hundreds of hours researching the ancestors for those who have contacted us. OFGS has started two new areas of stored research and that is Residences and Subject matters for Fort Scott and Bourbon County. Fort Scott is full of historic homes and our goal is to have a detailed history of our residences. The subject matter covers all types of history in Bourbon County and is usually gleaned from newspapers.

OFGS has index cards containing newspaper copies of birth notices for births from the 1970's to the 2000's. The continuation of locating, cutting and pasting the birth announcements is a project for a future volunteer.

.

OFGS is also blessed with newspaper microfilm from our earliest days to 2018. These articles are not indexed, so it laborious to locate, cut and paste all the birth announcements that are waiting for a volunteer to fill in the missing announcements.

There are old documents noting births from the very beginning of Fort Scott. The filing of births was not required by the State of Kansas until 1911, so not all are noted, especially those in rural Bourbon County.
