Schools – Fort Scott and Rural

Bourbon County had 111 Rural Schools in the late 1800's to early 1900's. Their moto was that no child should walk more than 1 ½ miles to school. Think we could get away with that now? OFGS was given the original old documents for many of the rural schools and they are housed in filing cabinets, cupboards and notebooks. We have almost a complete selection of High School and college annuals for Fort Scott and many kindergarten, middle school and high school reunions in our "school" section. Some files have pictures of the students were others have the grades the student was given for their work. Some files are newspaper clippings of posed students in front of their schools. Come check out our large collection of school records and see if your ancestor is there.

FORT SCOTT SCHOOLS, #55

Central/Eddy/Fort Scott High School/Ivy/Main/ Margrave/Plaza/Washington

Bourbon County School Districts were created where children would never walk more than a mile-and-a-half from home to school. This created 111 districts throughout the county. School names have changed because of community name changes, schools merged as it was easier for students to get to school, loss of a school house, communities that moved (yes this happened more often than we would think), etc.

OFGS has a large number of student records for most of the schools. Some records are the teacher's hardbound books and others are folders with student pictures.

Please contact OFGS for a possible photograph of the students in a particular school. These are sketchy, but there is a chance your ancestor will be in the photo.
