Bill Brixey

R.S. "Bill" Brixey, 82, or 114 S Kentucky, died Monday at Allen County Hospital.

He was born Sept 25, 1901, in Mountain Home, Ark., the son of Thomas and Sarah (Lance) Brixey. He grew up in Gainsville, Mo., and moved to Kansas as a young man. He married Georgia Brooks on April 13, 1938, in Fredonia. They made their home in Iola.

Brixey worked at several different jobs including in the Iola Police Department for seven years. At the time of his retirement in 1970 he worked for Nelson Brothers at LaHarpe.

Survivors include his wife, Georgia; a son, Donald A. "Bill" Brixey, Kincaid; two daughters, Betty Parker of Gas and Judy Powell, Tulsa; two sisters, Carrie Cantwell, Tulsa, and Julia Holingsworth, Jenks, Okla; five grandsons; and a great-grandson. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Jerry Lee, and a grandson, Stephen Stapleton.

Funeral services for Brixey will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Waugh-Yokum Chapel. The Rev. Robert Cooper will officiate. Interment will be in Highland Cemetery

Obituary - BERNARD NOLAN

Bernard N. "Bing" Nolan of Whitewater, a former resident of the Colony area, died Monday, April 30, in Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. He was 75.

He was born Nov. 5, 1908, at Lane. Before his retirement he as a transport truck driver for the Missouri-Pacific Railroad. He was a member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Independence, and a 53-year member of the Knights of Columbus at Garnett. On April 21, 1934, he married Frances S. Swickard at Winfield. She survives as do a son, James, Whitewater, two daughters, Frances Claire Dixon of Orlando, Fla, and Michelle Ann Nolan, Garland, Texas, two brothers, Joseph M. Nolan of Iola and William D. Nolan, Wichita Falls, Texas; a sister Mary Agnes Hillyer, Kansas City; and 12 grandchildren. The funeral Mass will be 11 a.m., Thursday in St. Theresa's Church at Westphalia. The Rev. Earl Dekat will be celebrant. Burial will be in the Colony Cemetery. The Lamb Mortuary of Whitewater is in charge of arrangements.

Obituary - JULIA EVELINA CARLSON

Julia Evelina Carlson, age 95 of Elsmore, died early Monday, April 30, at her home. She was born August 28, 1888, in Elsmore the daughter of Edward and Otella (Lindquist) Swanson.

She was married February 3, 1915 to Eric Leonard Carlson at the home of her parents. He preceded her in death on October 5, 1959. Mrs. Carlson was a life-long member of the Friends Home Lutheran Church of Savonburg. Survivors included La Vor Atterbury, Start; Mrs. Gerald (La Vance) Johnson, Elsmore; Mrs. Fred (La Dell) Cunningham, Jr., Elsmore; Leonard Carlson, Elsmore, eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, and one brother.

Services for Mrs. Carlson will be held Wednesday, May 2, 1984 at 10 a.m. in the Friends Home Lutheran Church of Savonburg. Rev. Howard Youngbloom will officiate. Burial will follow in the Elsmore Cemetery. Visiting will be be from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 1at Kunkel Funeral Chapel. In Moran Memorials may be made to Friends Home Lutheran Church.

Obituary - JO LINDA BRYANT

Jo Linda Bryant of Kansas City, Mo, died Monday, April 30 at North Kansas City Memorial Hospital. She was 35 years old.

Mrs. Bryant was born in Iola and lived here until moving to Kansas City in 1968.

She worked in the collection department of the Mobile Credt Corporation for 15 years. She was a member of the Lutheran church. Mrs. Bryant is survived by her husband, John E., of Kansas City and two daughters, Paula Jo Duncan, Brunswick, Mo, and Jill St. Bryant, of the home; her mother Faye Allen, Iola; and a sister, Sandra Allen, Pittsburg.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the McGilley Antioch Chapel, Kansas City, Mo. The body will be cremated. The family will receive visitors at the chapel this evening from 7 until 9 o'clock.

Obituary Martha Lowe Collison-

Martha Lowe Collison, 81, of Topeaka, formerly of Humboldt, died Thursday evening, April 26, at a Topeaka hospital following a lengthy illness. She was born April 18, 1903, in Taney County, Missouri to William and Frances (Raney) Cook. She lived most of her life in the Allen and Neosho County-area moving to Topeka from Humboldt recently.

She was a member of the Humboldt Christian Church. She married Ben Collison in Humboldt in 1959. He preceded her death in 1966. Survivors include one son, James Lowe of Louisburg; five daughters, Margaret Riddell of Eureka, Ill., Marie Fehring of Independence, Mo., Marjorie Stevens, Minnie Hodges and Lois Ogle all of Topeka; one step-son, Dale Collison of Humboldt, three brothers, Cecil Cook of Missoula, Montana, Bill Cook of Nyssa, Oregon, and Clyde Cook of Stark; and two sisters, Lenna Smart of Independence, Mo., and Lois Hefner of Colorado Springs. She leaves 25 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. One son, Wayne Lowe, preceded her in death in 1981.

Funeral services for Mrs. Collison were held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 30, at the Humboldt Christian Church with the Rev. Jim Bertels officiating. Burial followed at in Savonburg at Mount Moriah Cemetery.

Memorials to in Mrs. Collison's memoy to the Humboldt Christian Church may be left at the Price Stanldy Funeral Home which was in charge of arrangements.

Rena Flack

Rena Flack, 82, of Moran died Monday, Dec. 2, at the Moran Manor Nursing Home.

She was a homemaker.

She was born Dec. 13, 1902, at Bayard, the daughter of Robert and Dora Frame Dougherty. On Sept. 20, 1919, she married Alva Flack in Iola. They lived at Laharpe and then in Texas several years before moving to Moran in 1931. Mr. Flack died Oct. 10, 1974.

Mrs. Falck was a member of the Moran United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a son, Russell Flack of Moran; a brother, Bing Dougherty of Moran, two sisters, Jessie Hardy of Moran and Emma Lambeth, Downey, Calif.; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Three sisters are deceased.

The funeral service will be 1 p.m. Friday in Kunkel Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Donald F. Hood will officiate. Burial will be in the Moran Cemetery.

Elmer E. Lewis

Elmer E. Lewis, 63, of 612 N Seventh, Humboldt, died Tuesday, Dec. 3, in the Pinecrest Nursing Home in Humboldt.

The son of Roy L. and Sarah Metzget Lewis, he was born Nov. 3, 1922 on a farm in Coffey County. He grew up in the LeRoy and Neosho Falls area and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After serving in the Army, he returned to the Neosho Falls area where he worked as a welder and blacksmith.

On Dec 4, 1966, he married Blanche Henry Lewis. They made their home in Humboldt. Mr. Lewis worked for the Humboldt Police Department for seven years and for Young Welding Shop in Chanute for 10 years before retiring a year ago.

He was a member of the Humboldt Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge in Humboldt, the LeRoy Masonic Lodge, Order of the Eastern Star in Humboldt and all the York Rite Masonic bodies in Iola.

Survivors include his wife, Blanche; a stepson, Bill Lewis of Yorktown, Texas; three step-daughters, Joan Diver of Augusta, Mary Wade and Lois Ridge, both of Humboldt; a brother, Clarence Lewis of Humboldt; a sister, Claramae Mathis, Mission, Texas; and nine step grandchildren. Two brothers, John and Roy Jr., are deceased.

Funeral services of Lewis will be 2 p.m. Friday in the Neosho Falls United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Cedarvale Cemetery, Neosho Falls, Woodson County. Waugh-Yokum and Friskel Memorial Chapels are in charge of arrangements.

Carl W. Cation

Carl W. Cation, 92, a lifelong resident of Humboldt, died Thursday, Dec 5, at Allen County Hospital.

He was a retired farmer and an Army veteran of World War 1.

He was born at Humboldt on March 26, 1893, the son of David and Lulu Campbell Cation. He married Irene Fewins in Iola. She died in 1983.

He was a member of the Humboldt Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include sons Wesco Cation of Wichita and Gilbert Cation, Independence; a brother, Lester of Ottawa; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Cation will be 2 p.m. Monday in Kunkel Funeral Chapel, Humboldt. The Rev. Henry White will officiate. Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.

"CAP" LOWRY

Holland "Cap" Lowry, 85, Humboldt died at the Neosho Memorial Hospital Saturday, January 31, 1987. He was born July 17, 1901 at Harris, Missouri to Delbert and Amanda (Baker) Lowry.

Mr. Lowry came to Humboldt in the 1920's and on September 21, 1929, he married Fern Palmer at Fort/Scott.

Mr. Lowry was retired from Monarch Cement. He attended the Humboldt United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Fern, of the Home; one daughter, Nadine Garcia, Chanute; a step-daughter, Marian Mayhugh, Orange, California; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and one neice. He was preceded in death by one son, Herbert Roy Lowry on April l6, 1978.

Funeral services for Mr. Lowry were today (Tuesday), February 2, 1987 at the Humboldt United Methodist Church, Rev. Don Harper officiated. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery, Humboldt. Kunkel Funeral Chapel was in charge of' the arrangements.

Maude M Sutherland

Maude Mayfield Sutherland, 80, of Cherokee Village, Ark., died Sunday, April 24, 1994, in the Cherokee Village hospital following a long illness. She had been seriously ill for three weeks.

She was an aunt of Joe and Dick Sutherland, Iola, and Charlene Levans, LaHarpe.

She was born in the Carlyle area, the daughter of Austin and Robert a Edgar Mayfield. She worked in the Agriculture Department in Washington, D.C., in a confidential position.

When she and her husband, Harvey Sutherland, moved to Belleville, Ill., where he was in the AirForce, Mrs. Sutherland was active in the chamber of commerce and was honored as the area supervisor for beauty counseling.

When they retired, the Sutherlands moved to Cherokee Village. Mr. Sutherland died in 1977.

Survivors include two brothers, Edgar and Bruce Mayfield, both of California, and other nieces and nephews.

A brother, Howard, and a sister, Dorothy, died previously.

The funeral will be in the Methodist Church in Cherokee Village. A service and burial will be in Iola at a later date.

Max W. Watts

Max W. Watts, 86, of Humboldt died this morning, April 26, 1994, at Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center in Chanute.

He was born in Salem, Iowa, the son of George William and Maria Forsythe Watts. When he was 7 years old, the family moved to Yates Center. He lived there 18 years and then moved to the Humboldt area.

He worked at Monarch Cement for 21 years, retiring in 1973. He enjoyed farming and was involved in it for most of his life. He was a member of Maple Grove United Methodist Church and the Humboldt Senior Citizens.

On Sept. 24, 1933, he married Dorothy Whelchel. She survives as do four sons, Delmar of Independence, Lorel of Nevada, Mo., Wayne of Oklahoma and Roger, Lubbock, Texas; a daughter Jaunita Schwobe of Salt Lake City, Utah; 20 grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

Three brothers, Lawrence, Robert and Arthur, and two sisters, Esther Shook and Doris Woodruff, are deceased.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Kunkel Funeral Chapel in Humboldt., The Rev. Paul Life will officiate. Burial will be in Kalida Cemetery near Yates Center.

Memorial contributions to the Maple Grove United Methodist Church or the Kidney Foundation may be left with the funeral home.

Frankie L. McGrew

One-hundred-year-old Frankie L. McGrew, former resident of Gas, died Thursday, April 28, 1994, at Tara Gardens.

The daughter of John and Alvira Canaday Forrester, she was born Dec. 2, 1893, in Blue Mound. She moved to Gas in 1909. On Oct. 14, 1917, she married Ora C. "Casrl" McGrew and they made their home in Gas. Mr. McGrew died Sept. 15, 1978.

Mrs. McGrew was a longtime member of the Gas United Methodist Church. She played the piano for services there for more than 60 years, until about 10 years ago. In addition to her church work, she enjoyed growing flowers.

Survivors include two sons, Gerald McGrew of Tulsa and Jack McGrew, Iola; two daughters, Mrs. John (Florice) Ford of Springfield, Mo., and Mrs. Charles (Shirley) Menzie, LaHarpe; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Two brothers, five sisters and a great-grandchild also are deceased.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Waugh-Yokum and Friskel Memorial Chapels, 16 N. Buckeye. The Rev. Eva Howard will officiate. Interment will be in Highland Cemetery.

Memorial contributions to the Gas United Methodist Church may be left with the funeral home.
