Barber County Kansas |
A. R. Van Horn was born in Harrison county, West Virginia, July 3, 1838.He was married when young, his wife dying twelve years ago at Pawnee Rock, Kansas. He leaves four daughters and one son; Mrs. Geo. Lott, Mrs. Thos. Hatfield, Mrs. J. P. Massey; all of Sun City, Kansas, Mrs. Val Crape, of Larned, Kansas and L. W. Van Horn of Shawnee, O. T., a Rock Island conductor.
Mr. Van Horn had been afflicted with dropsy for the past year, recovering to some extent last fall, and was able to visit his children. About two months ago he was again confined to bed and gradually declined until his death, last Monday at 10:30 a.m.
No man stood higher in his community and every one of his children is an honor to him. He was a true Christian and a member of the Baptist church. Rev. Owens of Belvidere preached the funeral sermon Tuesday at the residence, Mrs. Ollie Frazier presiding at the organ as Mr. and Mrs. Hoghton and Miss Like sang in a most beautiful manner the hymns that had been favorites of the departed. The entire neighborhood came in to pay respect, all mourning with the relatives for the loss of a good man.
The end came quietly, without a struggle, he having bid good bye to his children offering fervent prayer for all. He asked God's blessing on all his children and the prayer is answered, in that no greater blessing could be granted to children than to have such a father; he was an upright man, a tender father, an honorable citizen in every respect. His children were all continuously with him for several days prior to his death and tenderly cared for and soothed his dying pillow. They took him by his request and laid him to rest beside his wife and their mother at Pawnee Rock. - Coats Courant.

We think this photo was taken around 1894/1895, as Van Lott, the youngest in the photo was born in 1893." -- Kim Fowles.
The following is an excerpt from A Biographical History of Central Kansas (1902) under the biography of George W. Lott: "On the 10th of February 1878 in Jackson Centre, Ohio, he married Ella B. Van Horn, who was born in Virginia, a daughter of Austin R. and Ellen (Powers) Van Horn. Her father was an extensive farmer and stock dealer and removed from Virginia to Ohio, where he spent three years. In 1878 he went to Pawnee county, Kansas, where for eighteen years he was engaged in farming. During that time his wife died. He afterward came to Barber county, where he now makes his home with his daughter, Mrs. Thomas T. Hatfield, just west of Sun City. Unto Mr. and Mrs. Van Horn were born five children: Dora, the wife of Thomas T. Hatfield, a farmer and stockman of Sun City; Mrs. Lott; Artha L; the wife of Joseph P. Massey, one of the prominent citizens and an extensive farmer and stockman residing near Sun City; Flora, who married V.C. Crane, an extensive stockman of Pawnee county, Kansas; and Lewis W., a conductor of the Choctaw & Southern Railroad, and residing in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma."
