The celebration of Halloween was brought to a sudden and sad close Monday night, when two local youths received minor injuries, as the result of revolver shots fired by Stewart Millimum, 73 years old.Glen Carter, 18, son of Ed Carter, received the most serious wounds. The bullet entered the left side of the back, about 2 1/2 inches from the spine, below the ribs and about even with the upper portion of the kidney.
Young Carter was first reported to be in a serious condition, but is rapidly recovering in the Ashland hospital.
Roby Roberts, 15, son of Mrs. Castile, was less seriously wounded, returning to his home after an examination at the hospital. The bullet entered the heavy portion of his hip and ranged downward, lodging half-way towards the knee.
Mr. Millimum's out building had been upset each Halloween for sometime. This year he decided to give the boys a scare.
Taking his .22 caliber automatic pistol with him, he guarded his property by walking up and down the alley for about two hours, according to neighbors.
When he saw the boys coming he hid in the building. As they began to rock the building, Mr. Millimum opened the door and ran out. The boys started to run and Millimum fired three shots.
Tuesday morning Mr. Millimum appeared to be ignorant of the fact he had injured the boys when he was questioned.
Millimum stated he shot to scare the boys and remarked: "By the way they ran I got the job done."
Millimum was arrested by P. D. Thornhill early Tuesday and held on a state warrant. He was turned over to the county officers late that afternoon.
In the above story, "Castile" should have been "Casteel". Mrs. Casteel, widow of John Casteel, was the mother of Johnnie Casteel; Roby Roberts was Johnnie Casteel's half-brother. This shooting took place in Protection, Comanche County, Kansas.
