Word was received here last Sunday that on Saturday night, September 6, Kenneth Hazen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Hazen, was killed in Oklahoma City as a result of a bullet wound. His assailant was later captured in a hotel in that city, according to reports.The body was brought to Coldwater for burial. Funeral services were held in the Assembly of God church in this city Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 and were in charge of the pastor, Rev. I. D. Rayborn.
Mrs. Martha Zerby and Mrs. Ferrel Guizlo sang "Sometime We'll Understand," "Going Down the Valley" and "Let the Lower Lights Be Burning," accompanied by Mrs. Donald Darnell of Greensburg.
The active pallbearers were Robert Whelpley, Ralph Boyer, Chester Wells, Bud Lawrence, Tom Shumrall and Ernie Ross.
The honorary pallbearers were Bobby Hazen, Eugene Hazen, George Hazen, Glenn Booth, Donald Rich and Don Butler. Interment was in Crown Hill cemetery near Coldwater with military services by the Coldwater V. F. W. post.
Obituary. Kenneth Roy Hazen, son of Roy and Lena Hazen, was born at Protection, Kans., April 11, 1926, and departed this life at Oklahoma City, Okla., September 6, 1952, at the age of 26 years, 4 months and 25 days.
Kenneth, at three years of age, moved with his parents to Scott City, Kans. When eight years old they returned to Coldwater. He attended school at Coldwater and was graduated with the Englewood, Kans., class of 1944.
In July, 1944, he entered the armed forces and served with the 177th Infantry in the Pacific, at Okinawa, the Philippine Islands and in Japan. He was returned to the United States on a hospital ship and given an honorable discharge as a disabled veteran. He received treatment at the Wichita Veterans Hospital for a nervous disorder.
On May 4, 1949, at Topeka, Kans., he was united in marriage with Irene Hinrickson of Elreno, Okla. One daughter, Eleanor Elaine, came to bless this home. One year ago the family established their home in Oklahoma City where Kenneth was employed at the Tinker Field Air Base as a jet engine mechanic.
Kenneth had a pleasing personality and made friends easily.
His untimely passing leaves his wife and daughter of the home, his parents; Mr. and Mrs. Roy Hazen, of Coldwater; three sisters: Violet of Wichita and Phyllis and Janice of Coldwater; five brothers - Jesse of Wichita, Virgil in the Air Corps, and Jimmy, Richard and Jerry of the home, besides a host of other relatives and friends.
