DEATH OF JERRY LAKEY

Jerry Lakey, who had lived in or near Protection for about 23 years, died at 5:15 a.m. in the Ashland hospital on last Friday, the 23d, after a brief illness, resulting from high blood pressure and heart trouble. He had been taken to the hospital on the previous Tuesday.

Funeral services were conducted from the M. E. church in this city on Sunday afternoon, with the pastor, Rev. C. C. Brown, in charge. Burial was made in Crown Hill cemetery.

Mr. Lakey was born in Morgan-co., Mo., on August 31, 1857. At the time of his death he was 73 years, 4 months and 23 days of age. On December 2, 1879, while a resident of Missouri, he was united in marriage with Miss Mary Cox, who, with four daughter and two sons, survive him. The surviving children are: Joe Lakey of Pierceville, Kans.; Simpson Lakey of Hugoton, Kans.; Mrs. Pearl Carrick of this county; Mrs. Sylvia Hitchcock and Mrs. Lola Newton of Eldorado, Kans., and Mrs. Hattie (Roy) Oller of this county. One brother, Milas Lakey, and two half brothers, who live in Carroll-co., Mo., also survive.

Deceased has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church since early manhood, and had lived a consisted Christian life. He was regarded by all as a good citizen and a good father, husband and friend. The relatives have the sincere sympathy of all.
