The Western Star, August 19, 1904.

Mrs. S. F. Murray Passes Away.

At a few minutes before 12 o'clock on last Sunday night Mrs. S. F. Murray died at her home, a few miles south of Protection, after an illness of nearly 4 weeks, the immediate cause of her sickness and death being bowel trouble. She had been in failing health for several months and when she was stricken 3 weeks ago her strength and recuperative powers were already considerably enfeebled. The efforts of skilled physicians and the constant administrations of loving friends and relatives were unavailing, and all were compelled to bow to the will of Him who "doeth all things well."

Harriet Elizabeth Hughes was born in Morgan-co., Ill. on September 15, 1840. On March 26, 1860, she was united in marriage to Stewart F. Murray at Murrayville, Ill. Mr. and Mrs. Murray continued to live in Illinois until April, 1880, when they moved to Sumner-co., Ks. They moved from Sumner-co. to Comanche-co, in 1886, thus becoming identified with our earliest settlers. Their home 3 miles south of Protection was built up by years of toil and of sacrifice, and it was always a happy and hospitable home. For miles around Mr. and Mrs. S. F. Murray were known and respected.

Mrs. Murray had for many years been a faithful and consistent member of the Presbyterian church. She stated not long before her death that she did not fear to die, that she felt fully prepared, and that her only regret was that of leaving her family. Four sons, John, Oscar and Allie Murray of Protection-tp., this county, and Ollie S. Murray of Ashland, Ill., and two daughters, Mrs. H. E. Crummer of this city and Mrs. D. E. Dunne of Wichita, are left to mourn the loss of a mother whose life of devotion to her family and whose many ministrations of love for their welfare will always be an inspiration to them. Two children died in infancy.

Funeral services were conducted in the Presbyterian church in this city at 11 a.m. on Tuesday and were in charge of the pastor, Rev. W. L. Roberts. A large number of the neighbors and friends of the family were present at the funeral to pay their last respects to one who had long been a friend and a neighbor to them. Burial took place in the Coldwater cemetery by the side of the husband and father who died nearly four years ago.

John Alexander Murray, son of Harriet (Hughes) Murray.
