Paul Issac Schmidt, son of Rev. Henry U. Schmidt and his wife Katherine, was born September 22, 1905, in Springfield, South Dakota and passed away March 1, 1980, at Coldwater, Kansas. He and his family migrated by covered wagon from South Dakota through Colorado, Kansas and into Oklahoma. He was married to Gracie Wedel, December 15, 1924 in Coldwater. They lived in eastern Colorado for a time and in 1930 came back to Coldwater to live, where he has resided for the past 50 years. He and his wife had three children, 2 sons and 1 daughter.
In his youth he attended four years at Oklahoma Bible Academy at Meno, Oklahoma.
Paul was a masterful mechanic and a fine carpenter. He took pride in his work as his philosophy of life was that his work reflected his true character.
Through the depression years he worked, keeping many farmer's machinery running. He spent several years working for the B. J. Herd Implement business. Then in later life he took up carpentry. He worked at this trade until recently when his health would not permit his working. He has worked with Cleo Bliss and with the late George Scholle, who were more than fellow workmen, they were friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Alfred. He leaves to mourn his absence: his three children, Marvin and his wife, Virginia of Palmdale, California; Calvin and his wife, Roxie of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Elizabeth and her husband, Ray Richards of Wichita. Four generations, three granddaughters and one great granddaughter; one brother, Emil Schmidt of Salem, Oregon; three sisters, Agnus Young of Stroud, Oklahoma; Ruth Schultz and Suzie Koehn, both of Meno, Oklahoma and a host of other relatives and many friends.
His children relate -- "Dad had a great feeling for the people here in Coldwater. He never wanted to be away from the community for any length of time."
