SHELLENBARGER - In Coldwater, Kansas, on Friday, May 16, 1902, James L. Shellenbarger, aged 51 years, 5 months and 18 days.Deceased was a native of Ohio, having been born in Lima, Allen-co., that state, on November 28, 1850. His parents lived for awhile in Illinois, and later, in 1850, his father and family moved to Comanche-co., Kansas. Mr. Shellenbarger was elected to the office of probate judge of Comanche-co. at the general election in November, 1898, but owing to failing health was unable to serve out his term. At the time of his death he had been a sufferer for nearly 7 years with a disease designated by the physicians as Pott's disease of the spine. About a week before his death Mr. Shellenbarger was thought to be much better, and made a trip uptown, but the next day was taken worse, and gradually grew weaker until the end came at 4:30 p.m. on last Friday. The deceased leaves no family. One brother, John, and two sisters, Miss Ruth Shellenbarger and Mrs. Mary Russell, are the only surviving members of the family in this county. Brief funeral services, conducted by Rev. W. L. Roberts, of the Presbyterian church, were conducted at the residence at 3 p.m. on Saturday, after which interment took place in the Coldwater cemetery.
