W. H. Sinkle, Comanche county's eldest citizen, passed away at Protection last Saturday at the advanced age of 99 years. He lacked less than seven months of living to be 100.Funeral services were held in the Protection Baptist church Monday afternoon, November 2, at 2:30 and were in charge of the pastor Rev. Harold Trevolt, assisted by Rev. C. W. Roll, pastor of the Coldwater Christian church.
Mrs. Ferrel Guizlo and Mrs. Martha Zerby of Coldwater sang "Rock of Ages" and Mrs. Irene Herron, Mrs. Charles Jones and Mrs. Joe Herron sang "I Won't Have to Cross Jordan" and "Beyond the Sunset" accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Marjorie Holler.
The active pallbearers were six of the deceased's grandsons - Theodore Smith of Mullinville, Carl Smith of Oklahoma City, Forest Smith of Coldwater, John Walt Jr. of Kansas City, Kans., Merle Walt of Protection and Don Smitherman of Wichita. The honorary pallbearers were B. J. Herd and A. J. Six of Coldwater and Ben Bird, Eugene Bilyeu, Fred Webb and Claude Simkins of Protection. Burial was in the Coldwater cemetery.
Obituary.
William Herman Sinkle, son of John Fredric and Katherine Sinkle, was born May 16, 1854, near Gerald, Missouri. He departed this life at Protection, Kans., October 31, 1953, at the age of 99 years, 6 months and 15 days.
Mr. Sinkle received his education and religious training at Walbert, Mo. On February 12, 1881, he was united in marriage with Mary Madgeline Caldwell at Gerald, Mo. and settled on a farm south of Gerald. To this union four children were born, two of whom preceded their father in death. Johnnie passed away in infancy and a daughter, Emma, in 1940. Mary, his wife died in February, 1932.
In 1916 the Sinkle family moved to Comanche county, Kansas, where Mr. Sinkle engaged in farming for many years. After retiring from active employment, he made his home with his daughters in Coldwater and Protection.
Mr. Sinkle was a faithful member of the Baptist church at Gerald, Mo., and after moving to Kansas continued faithful in his Christian testimony and loving service in the name of his Master.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Clara Brandt of Coldwater and Mrs. John Walt, Protection; 10 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and a multitude of friends.
Mr. Sinkle enjoyed excellent health and was physically active up until only a few weeks prior to his death. He was a most kind, patient and loving father. All who knew him will long cherish his unselfish and kind disposition. Truly he lived a long and rich life, abundant in kindness, filled with the joy of Christian service and crowned with success in the deeper meanings of life.
