Mrs. Margaret Ward Dies at Age 85

Come to Kansas In a Covered Wagon When Eight Years Old

Mrs. A. A. Ward passed away in Haviland, Kans., Thursday, December 24, and funeral services were conducted from the Christian church in Coldwater Monday, December 28, at 2:00 p.m. They were in charge of the pastor, Claude Wright.

Mrs. Lee Roy Cline and Mrs. Myrl Haun sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and Mrs. Rosa Beeley sang "Good Night and Good Morning." Mrs. Francis Burkhall was the accompanist.

Pallbearers were Ephraim Robbins, John Thompson, George Smith, Walter Thompson, Harold McKinney and Earl Crowe. Interment was in Crown Hill cemetery.

Obituary.

Margaret Elizabeth Chilton was born February 24, 1874, near Van Buren, Carter county, Missouri. The daughter of Charles Wesley and Laura Carnahan Chilton, she was the eldest of a family of five sons and two daughters.

While a small child the family moved to Tahlequah, Okla., and when she was eight years of age the family moved in a covered wagon to Kendall, Kans., where she grew to womanhood and was united in marriage on December 25, 1898, with Albert Alonzo Ward.

To this union were born two sons, Orville Ward of Coldwater, Kans., and the younger one who passed away and was buried at Kendall, Kans.

Mr. and Mrs. Ward lived at Ellinwood, Kans., until they moved to a farm in southern Kiowa county, Kansas, in 1907, where they resided until July, 1928, when they purchased a home in Coldwater. Mr. Ward passed away December 2, 1936.

Mrs. Ward resided in Coldwater until in July, 1957, when she made her home with her son, Orville, and wife. In September, 1958, she entered the Haviland Siesta Home, where she resided until her death. At the time of her death she was 85 years and 10 months of age.

Mrs. Ward joined the Methodist church at Kendall, Kans., at the age of 15. She transferred her membership to the Christian church in Coldwater in 1915 where she continued her fellowship with her God. She enjoyed her work in the church until her health became impaired so she could not do active work.

Mrs. Ward was a devoted wife and was very devoted to her family and grandchildren. She will be greatly missed from from the family circle.

She is survived by one son, Orville, of Coldwater, three granddaughters, Mrs. Marjorie Hill of Bloom, Kans., Mrs. Phyllis Brown of Greensburg, Kans., and Mrs. Joyce Thronesberg of Greensburg, and one grandson, James Ward of Coldwater; one brother, Joe Chilton of Golden, Colo., and one sister, Mrs. Emma McProud, of Oxnard, Calif.; 10 great grandchildren, four nephews and one niece.
