We are both natives of Comanche County and reside on the farm John's grandfather, Henry White, acquired in 1884 which is located 6 miles north and 2 1/2 miles west of Coldwater. We are the third generation to live and raise our family in this house which has been remodeled at various times through the years. Much to our pleasure, relatives come to visit their place of origin and residence.John is the son of Arthur Jesse and Anna (Maris) White. He was born July 3, 1914, in this house as was his father before him. The family consisted of Maris, Wallace, John, Emma, Alice and Nada. He attended grade school at Pleasant Ridge rural school and graduated from Coldwater High School with the class of 1934. He also attended Kansas State College, Manhattan, Kansas. His greatest interest in life is farming, and he has pursued that occupation most of his life.
My home for the first 14 years was located 2 miles west and 1 1/4 miles north of Coldwater. I am the fifth child of Hiram A. "Bob" and Anna (Luce) Tinker. My brothers and sisters are Alwin, Donna, Forrest, John, Mary, Dwight, Floyd, Jean and Roberta as listed in the Tinker history. I attended a rural school, Sandbur Valley, and later Coldwater school, graduating with the class of 1934. After graduation, I worked for three years as Coldwater school secretary. These were depression years and the salary ($30.00 per month) was rather meager by today's standards.
John and I were married Jan 1, 1937, at Pratt, Kansas, by Rev. Dellinger. Our lives have been centered around the Methodist church, school, county extension, farm bureau, Masonic Lodge and Order of Eastern Star. The hobbies we indulge in are golf, fishing, travel and an occasional game of cards with friends.
We were blessed with five children of whom we are quite proud: Ronald Arthur, born Feb. 1, 1938; Anita Marie, born Feb. 14, 1939; Marlan Jon, born June 25, 1940; Dolores Pauline, born September 15, 1942; Theron Eugene, born Dec. 9, 1948. Their involvement in school, church, 4-H, and various activities kept the wheels of the family car spinning to say nothing of their parents heads. They have each found their special niche in life and have families of their own.
Ronald married Patricia Trummel and their children are Sonya Lynn, Perry Russell and David Mitchell. They live in Pratt, Kansas. Anita married Donald Jennison and lives in Denver, Colo. Their children are Donita Marie, Mark Wayne and Danna Kay. Marlan married Betty Adams; their children are Suzanne Michelle and Troy Matthew and their home is in Denver, Colo. Delores married Richard Runquist and lives in Great Bend, Kansas. Their children are Randall Paul, Eric John and Shane Richard. Theron married Judith Wright and lives in Ft. Meyers, Florida.
In 1954, I went back to work as a school secretary for two years. then for eleven years, worked for Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service. I attended Fort Hays State College 1967-'70, earned a B.S. degree in Business Education, and taught in Hanston High School, Hanston, Kansas, 1070-'74. Life's experiences have been many and varied.
