Arthur Barlow, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur E. Barlow of this city, continues to display remarkable powers as an athlete. He is a student at the Kansas State Manual Training College located at Pittsburg. We quote the following in reference to his athletic activities, from last Friday's Pittsburg Sun, being some extracts from the write-up of the contest between the Pittsburg Manual Training College and Southwestern College, Winfield. Arthur did much to help his school win the meet. The Sun says:Barlow, freshman, set a new school record for the broad jump when he cleared 22 feet, 1 1/2 inch, two inches longer than the record held for several seasons by Cockerill at 21 feet, 11 1/2 inches.
In clipping off the relay in 3:37.2, the Manual team, composed of Purma, Rondell, Barlow and F. Snodgrass, established a new school record cutting off about 5 seconds from the former mile relay record of three minutes, 42 and a fraction seconds. Two members of the relay team are Freshman and two are sophomores. In winning first place in three events, Barlow was high pointer of the meet, with 15 points. Barlow, who is a freshman, is one of the most promising young athletes of the school, proving himself a valuable quarter miler in the 440 yard dash and relay, fast on the 120 yard hurdles and a great broad jumper. He starred in all four events in which he participated.
One of the interesting sidelights of the dual meet was that Barlow's father came 300 miles from Coldwater, Kans., to watch his son take high point honors, break a school record and take three first places in addition to virtually winning the one mile relay by recovering a distance of about 25 feet in the third quarter, giving F. Snodgrass a lead which he maintained and increased, making the relay an altogether interesting affair.
