The Western Star, June 17, 1904.

Melvin Ernest Barnes

BARNES - On Saturday, June 11, 1904, Melvin Ernest Barnes, aged 11 years, 6 months and 18 days.

For the second time within a year death has entered the house of Mr. and Mrs. D. E. Barnes at their home 10 miles south of Coldwater. About 8 months ago Edward, the oldest son sickened and died. A couple weeks ago Ernest, the second son, took sick with a complaint similar to that which caused the death of the older brother --some form of kidney trouble-- and in less than a week the messenger of Death had brought his relentless summons. The solicitous and faithful administrations of physicians, parents and friends proved unavailing in their attempt to save the life of the suffering young man. Death occurred at 1 o'clock a.m. on Saturday.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. W. L. Roberts at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday at the Presbyterian church in this city. The attendance of friends and neighbors at the funeral was quite large. Eight of the young by friends of the deceased acted as pall bearers. The services were very impressive throughout. Interment was made in the Coldwater cemetery.
