J. D. Beck, one of the early settlers of Nescatunga-tp., and a citizen of this county, until about a year and a half ago, was found dead in the garden at his home near Jefferson, Oklahoma, on last Friday morning. He had been plowing some trees on Thursday afternoon and it is supposed that he fell dead while at work. He was living alone and it was not until Friday morning that a neighbor who was plowing on the place accidentally ran across Mr. Beck's dead body. Theo. Beck, son of the deceased, who lived not far away, was notified. The coroner was at once summoned and an inquest was held, the verdict being that Mr. Beck came to his death from natural causes. It is supposed that heart failure was the cause of his death.J. O. Beck, another son, and Mrs. Beck, the wife of the deceased, who made their home in Wichita, arrived on Friday and the funeral took place on Saturday morning.
John D. Beck was born in Davidson-co., North Carolina, on September 14, 1831. He moved to illinois in 1857 and from there to Kansas in 1885. He was a prominent citizen of Nescatunga and at one time was mayor of that city. About 18 months ago he sold out to E. G. Carthrae and moved to Grant-co., Oklahoma.
