Paul Wayne Bird, born December 11, 1922, of 908 North Cedar, died late Thursday, July 16, at the Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. He was 58 years of age.

Wayne was born at Protection and was raised on a farm east of Protection. The interest in rural life and activity was evident with Wayne's involvement in 4-H in his early years, interest in nature and his 25 years with he Kansas Farm Bureau as Agency Manager. Wayne served his country in the U. S. Army with extensive tour in Europe. He was a Flight Engineer and served in the 368th Bombardment Division.

Retirement from the Kansas Bureau came in 1980. His devotion to the Farm Bureau was recognized by his being the recipient of many awards and trips.

Wayne was an active member of the First Christian Church in Medicine Lodge, where he served as Deacon and was faithful in serving as an usher.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Coverdale Bird, of the home; a son, Paul Wayne Bird, Jr., of Grand Junction, Colo.; one daughter, Linda Brown of Casper, Wyo.; mother, Mabel Bird of Coldwater; and three brothers, Bennie Bird of Wichita, Ernest Bird, Columbus, Neb.; Richard Bird, Coldwater. He was preceded in death by his father, Ben H. Bird.

Wayne was a person that enjoyed life and people that he associated with. A quick hello and a brief story were his trademarks.

Services were held at the First Christian Church, Medicine Lodge July 20, at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Clark H. Tanner officiating. Burial was at the Highland Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established at the First Christian Church.
