The matter of purchasing a site for a city cemetery was under consideration by our city council at the last meeting. We learned that two tracts of land have been offered for cemetery purpose - one on D. E. Hutchin's place east of the city and the other on Mr. Adler's tract southeast. Both of these proposed sites are more convenient to town than the present cemetery, however, the matter of convenient is not so much the trouble as the matter of possession. It now appears that our present cemetery, consisting of 40 acres, has been proven up by some unscrupulous party and sold, so it cannot be used longer as a cemetery. It is now, incumbent upon the city to take immediate action upon the question of providing a burying ground, since we are virtually without one. Should the city authorities purchase a tract, it could be arranged without expense to the city, inasmuch as lots could be laid out and sold and the money paid into the city treasury. By all means let us have a decent place to bury our dead, and that at once. (SB)
"On August 8, 1887, a special election was held to issue bonds of $1,000.00 for purchasing ground outside the Coldwater city limits. H.H. Rich was mayor at the time and councilmen were C.D. Pauly, W.H. Kimple, Parker Wright, B.L. Eaton and P.H. Thornton. On December 10, 1887, the councilmen purchased forty acres in the southeast quarter of S8 - T32 - R18 from Lottie Hutchins for $800.00 . . .
A small cemetery used early in Coldwater's history is located in the southeast quarter of S24 - T34 -R19 two miles south of the city. Also south of Coldwater in the northeast quarter of S25 - T34 - R18 lies another known early burial site."
