Coldwater Athlete Breaks Old Record

Allen Hoffman Hurls Javelin 176 Feet 5 5/8 Inches At Hays

At the track meet of Class A and B schools held at Hays last Saturday Coldwater placed second. Coldwater won five fifth places at Hays along with their first and second places and would have placed first in the meet if the fifth place scores had been counted.

Allen Hoffman of Coldwater broke a 16 year old Iroquois league record by hurling the javelin 178 feet, five and 5/8 inches. The Iroquois League record was 169 feet.

Edwin Carleton came from behind in a field of eight and won first in the mile run, even though he was shouldered nearly off the track by the second place man.

Earl Kopke placed first in both the high hurdles and low hurdles and Paul Guizlo placed second.

Big Meet At Fowler

Approximately 100 field and track team members from the Iroquois League will participate in the annual meet to be held at Fowler Field, Fowler High School, on Friday afternoon, May 2. According to Coach Jess R. Lockert, Fowler, preliminaries in the dashes start at 1:00 p.m. and field events start at the same time. The meet will run continuously until 4:00 p.m. by which time all events will have been run.

Records for individual events in field and track events in the Iroquois League since its formation in 1929 are about equally divided with Ashland, Ford, Fowler and Minneola each holding three, and Bucklin and Coldwater, two.

Oldest standing records in the league are the shot put and javelin records set by Morain, Minneola, in 1930. These records, which have stood for 16 years, are shot put, 49 feet and 8 inches and javelin, 169 feet. Outstanding track season was 1935 when seven of the 16 records were set.

Coldwater men holding records in the league are: High jump, 8 foot, Smith in 1942. 880 yard relay, 1:36:8 in 1938.
