J. E. Davis died at 12:30 a.m. on last Friday, August 3, 1923, at his home in Clayton, Mo., a suburb of St. Louis, where the family had lived since 1903. He had been in failing health for some time and had suffered two or three paralytic strokes, which finally led to heart trouble. The end came rather unexpectedly and as tho he were passing into a peaceful sleep. The body was taken to Mr. Davis' old home at Mt. Gilead, Ohio, for burial. The Davis family lived in this county for a number of years prior to 1904, Mr. Davis operating a large ranch (the present Ray farm and ranch) on Mule Creek a few miles above Wilmore. The family was well known here. Mrs. Davis is a sister of Spencer Hull, now deceased. Mr. Davis was a good citizen, a successful business man and a faithful husband and father. He is survived by his wife, two sons and four daughters. They are: Mrs. Kenneth Gilbert, Will Davis and Mrs. Clyde Isreal, of Clayton, Mo.; Reese Davis of Lancaster, Penn. Also two other married daughters - Helen, whose home is in Virginia and Ruth, whose home is in Wisconsin.
