Robert L. Deck, 87, passed away suddenly at 2 o'clock of a heart attack as he sat in his rocking chair in his home. Mr. Deck had been up town in the morning joking with the men at the cafe and showed no signs of illness.Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Methodist church with Rev. Sanford Oyer officiating.
Jim Keasling, Gary Condra, Bill McLean, and Gary Long sang "Face to Face" and "The Ninety and Nine." Mrs. Lewis Hopkins was the organist.
The pallbearers were Raymond Sommerfeld, Lloyd Rhodes, Ora Baker, Arthur Windus, Lewis Hopkins, and Melvin Thornhill. The honorary pallbearers were A. L. Christopher, Clayton Williams, Eli Harbaugh, Frank Barnhart, Purl Bean, and Kos Sherman.
Interment was in the Protection Cemetery.
OBITUARY Robert Lee Deck, son of George M. and Mattie (Craig) Deck, was born July 17, 1872, at Gillispi, Ill., and departed this life Sunday, 2 p.m., December 27, 1959, at his home in Protection, aged 87 years, 5 months and 10 days.
He moved with his parents from Illinois to Norwich, Kans., in his teens and later to Kingman, Kansas, where he lived until 1923 when he went to work as a state weigh master at Termina Elevator Co. in Wichita, Kans. On June 4, 1924, he was united in marriage to Pearl Nickells of Protection, Kans. In 1925 they moved from Wichita to Protection where they made their home until his death.
He was converted in his youth. In September, 1924, he was baptized and received into the Hyde Park United Brethren Church in Wichita. In February, 1955, he transferred his membership to the Christian Church in Protection, Kans.
Most of his days in Protection were spent in farming until his retirement. He loved children and had a great interest in their activities.
Surviving are his wife Pearl; Harry Hughes of Oklahoma City who as a lad lived with the Decks and since has called him Dad; one sister, Maud Harlow of Wichita, two nephews, Rex Harlow of Wichita, Kans., and Byron Deck of Dallas, Texas; two nieces, Lucille, Mrs. Pete Stein of Fort Worth, Texas, and Iris Deck of Orlando, Florida; five cousins, Bert Deck of Meade, Mrs. Wanita Graham of Meade, George Deck of Dodge City, May, Mrs. Maurice Sherman of Sitka, and Edgar Deck of Protection. He was preceded in death by a brother, Will and a sister, Estella.
